Machuca
dir. Andres Wood, Chile, Spain, France, UK, 2004, 102mins., 35mm, color, In Spanish w/ English subtitles
The film is set during the last days of President Allende and the first days of Pinochet in 1978. Gonzalo Infante and Pedro Machuca are two eleven-year-old boys who live in Santiago, the former in a wealthy neighborhood and the latter in a recently created, illegal shantytown just a few blocks away. The headmaster at a private parochial school, Father McEnroe, with support from the parents of his students, admits children from the poor shantytown families into his elitist school. But in addition to the practical difficulties involved in this attempt at integration, there are others caused by the open social confrontation taking place in Chilean society between the supporters of President Allende and the army looking to reintroduce 'order'…

For several years Cristina has been employed as a practical nurse for an aging man. She spends her free days roaming the bustling city streets. They are a far cry from the poverty she left behind her in the south of Chile. She crosses paths with Tristan, who is trying to recover the love of his adored Irene. Enter Manuel, who falls in love with Cristina, and an entanglement of love ensues. Malta con huevo is no more than a vigorous blend of raw eggs, sugar and beer. The strange Chilean beverage turns out to be a mind-altering pleasure for Vladimir, but he is shocked when he wakes up one day to realize that he has been traveling back and forth in time.
