Just how did U.S. small business fare in the mixed 2007 economy? Overall, very well, according to a survey by online payroll provider SurePayroll.
According to the December 2007 SurePayroll Small Business Scorecard, small business hiring was up 4.3% for the year compared to a 0.2% decline in 2006. Salaries also continue to rise. The average small business salary in the United States in 2007 was $32,609, a 4.2% increase. However, that increase was slightly slower than 2006 when small business salaries grew by 7.4%.
"It was a great year for small businesses as they were able to grow in size materially even as a number of negative economic factors were in play," according to SurePayroll President Michael Alter.
SurePayroll also found that more small businesses relied on independent contractors in 2007, reporting that for every 100 workers engaged by small business, 3.45 are independent contractors.
The SurePayroll Small Business Scorecard is based on payroll data for more than 18,000 of its small business customers with 100 employees or fewer across all industries.
