[:es]El año 2016 termina con un nuevo escenario político para Estados Unidos, luego que las últimas elecciones presidenciales dejaron al candidato republicano Donald Trump como el próximo mandatario de ese país, quien llega a la Casa Blanca este 20 de enero.

El resultado de estos comicios fue sorpresivo para muchos dadas las proyecciones de las encuestas y el perfil poco tradicional de Trump, e incluso ha generado incertidumbre en algunos sectores. Sin embargo, no hay que olvidar que Estados Unidos cuenta con una institucionalidad sólida que establece límites y equilibrios entre los poderes del Estado, lo cual es avalado por una vasta trayectoria democrática.

En lo que respecta a su relación con Chile, ésta es sólida e integral, producto de décadas de trabajo conjunto. Este vínculo bilateral es una asociación constructiva, en la cual ambos países hacen aportes concretos. Ello, es muy relevante, ya que marca la diferencia respecto de las relaciones de Estados Unidos con otras economías, las cuales muchas veces se identifican por tener un carácter más bien asistencialista. Por otro lado, es integral, puesto que incorpora diversos temas en profundidad, tales como: comercio, inversión, cultura, ciencia, tecnología, entre otros. También es estratégica, ya que tiene principios y valores compartidos, como la promoción de la democracia, los derechos humanos, la libertad económica, la lucha contra la pobreza y el apoyo a la paz mundial.

Con la experiencia de casi un siglo de trayectoria, como Cámara Chileno Norteamericana de Comercio, AmCham Chile, no vemos motivos para que esta relación bilateral no siga avanzando y enriqueciéndose. Por el contrario, vislumbramos un gran potencial para ampliarla y fortalecerla, por lo que seguiremos trabajando activamente para cumplir con nuestra misión de promover el libre comercio, la inversión y una plena integración entre Chile y Estados Unidos, creando valor a nuestros socios y la sociedad.

En los últimos años, AmCham ha desarrollado un creciente rol vinculando intereses y acercando posiciones entre el sector público y privado de ambos países. Y lo seguiremos haciendo. También, continuaremos promoviendo la aprobación por parte del Congreso norteamericano del Tratado para Evitar la Doble Tributación entre Chile y Estados Unidos, pues estamos seguros de su beneficio para el comercio bilateral. Asimismo, seguiremos promoviendo nuestros argumentos respecto de los beneficios del Tratado Transpacífico de Libre Comercio (TPP).

Además, esperamos generar interesantes oportunidades para nuestro programa Look North, que promueve las oportunidades de desarrollo de negocios chilenos en diversas áreas en Estados Unidos. Adicionalmente, ampliaremos y profundizaremos nuestra agenda para promover el comercio y la inversión entre las dos naciones en beneficio de sus habitantes.

Estamos confiados en la sólida base de la relación Chile-Estados Unidos, así como en su potencial. En este contexto, creemos que lo que ésta requiere hacia adelante son mejores canales de comunicación y fortalecer el diálogo, promoviendo la diversidad, identificando oportunidades y propuestas concretas para abordar temas de manera conjunta entre ambas sociedades. Estos son parte de los desafíos de AmCham Chile para 2017.[:en]The year 2016 draws to a close with a new political scenario playing out in the United States, following the November presidential election in which the Republican Party candidate, Donald Trump, won the right to become the next US president. President-elect Trump is due to take over in the White House on 20 January 2017.

The results of the election were a surprise for many observers given the predictions in the opinion polls and the untraditional profile of Trump. As a result, the outcome has generated uncertainty in a number of quarters. However, it is important not to overlook the fact that the United States has solid public institutions that establish checks and balances between the main branches of the State, all of which are backed by a lengthy democratic tradition.

In regard to the United States’ relationship with Chile, the alliance is solid and comprehensive; the product of decades of collaborative work. Moreover, the bilateral link is a constructive partnership in which both countries provide concrete support. This is significant because it differs from US relationships with other countries in which connections are commonly characterized by a more welfare-type association. In terms of the comprehensive nature of the partnership, Chile-US relations cover a range of diverse issues in an in-depth manner, including business, investment, culture, science and technology, among others. It is also strategic because it is based on shared values such as promoting democratic principles, human rights, economic freedoms, the fight against poverty and supporting efforts aimed at securing international peace.

With almost a century of experience, the Chilean-American Chamber of Commerce, AmCham Chile, sees no reason why this bilateral relationship will not continue to prosper and enrich both parties in the future. In fact, we envisage great potential to broaden and expand this relationship. That is why we will continue to work actively towards fulfilling our mission to promote free trade, investment and full integration between Chile and the United States, creating value for our members and society as a whole.

In recent years, AmCham Chile has performed an increasingly active role in linking interests between, and bringing together, the public and private sectors of both countries. And we will continue to do so moving forward. Furthermore, we will strive to promote the ratification by the US Congress of the Avoidance of Double Taxation Treaty between Chile and the United States, since we are certain of its value to bilateral trade. Likewise, we will continue to put forward our point of view in regard to the advantages of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP).

In addition, we expect to generate interesting new possibilities for our Look North program, which promotes business development opportunities for Chilean companies across distinct areas in the United States. We will also expand and deepen our agenda to promote trade and investment between the two nations, to the benefit of citizens and residents of both countries.

We are confident of the solid foundation on which the Chile-US relationship is built, as well as of its potential in the long term. In this context, we firmly believe in the need to continue to improve channels of communication, strengthen dialogue and promote diversity, by means of identifying opportunities and concrete proposals in order to jointly address the most pressing issues that confront both societies today. These are just some of the challenges that AmCham Chile will confront in 2017.[:]
