CRITERIA FOR EISENHOWER FELLOWS
Eisenhower Fellowships seeks to identify emerging leaders in fields important to the development of their countries and who would benefit significantly from an intense eight week professional and leadership exposure in the United States. In recommending and nominating candidates, the following criteria should be used:
· Five to ten years of demonstrated exemplary leadership, as well as an expectation of at least 15-20 years of higher level leadership contributions, thus a preferred age range of 35-42 (32-45 acceptable)
· Fluency in English sufficient to conduct lengthy, in-depth discussions with professional counterparts and others in the broader U.S. society
· Demonstrated impact in the individual’s professional field, as evidenced by rapid advancement and significant accomplishment within the person’s institutional and national context
· Active leadership in broader professional/community activities, demonstrating a concern for improving society beyond one’s own basic job focus
· Integrity, energy, and motivation to make a difference, as evidenced in the individual’s statement of purpose, overall conduct, and testimony of distinguished countrymen
· Breadth of perspective and enthusiasm for continued learning, reflected in the range of expressed interests and activities that extend beyond the specific professional specialty
· Likelihood of actively contributing to the Eisenhower network, based on a prior networking record of dialog and work with others for common purposes
· Ability to design and articulate appropriate fellowship program objectives, reflecting thoughtful analysis and including achievable goals and objectives specifically linked to professional broadening and leadership development.
· Demonstrated potential for advanced leadership and societal impact through influence on key policies or in important operational areas, as evidenced by the individual’s prior career progression and personal attributes
· “Value added” of Fellowship to significantly enhance leadership strength and impact, based on comparatively limited recent exposure to the U.S.
Notes:
1. Eisenhower Fellowships are awarded for the specific eight-week time period indicated (with U.S. arrival required a few days before the scheduled Opening Seminar) and cannot be postponed. Fellows are expected to participate actively throughout the fellowship period. In the rare event of a professional or family emergency, any absence would be limited to one work week, would require related costs to be paid by the Fellow, and must be discussed in advance with the responsible program officer and receive written approval from EF’s vice president for programs.
2. A Fellow’s spouse is invited to participate in the program if s/he has a working
knowledge of English and participates for at least 3 weeks of the program,
including either the Opening or Closing Seminar. Children are not permitted to
accompany the Fellow.
2. Fellowships are not awarded for academic study, scientific research, private
business, or fundraising purposes; they are intended for professional broadening, leadership growth, and network development.
2009 MULTI-NATION PROGRAM
MARCH – MAY 2009
INFORMATION FOR EISENHOWER FELLOWSHIP APPLICANTS
Eisenhower Fellowships’ Multi-Nation Program is an eight-week professional/leadership development program available to individuals who have demonstrated potential for advanced leadership and positive impact in their home countries. It includes six weeks of individually planned meetings and events throughout the United States and group activities with other Fellows. The latter consists of an Opening Seminar to prepare group members for their travels and individual meetings and a Closing Seminar to share the respective learning experiences and their application to future personal and professional endeavors. Attendance throughout the program, including both seminars, is required for all Fellows. Fellows are also expected to participate actively in the Fellows’ network in the years following their U.S. stay.
The six-week individual travel segment is designed by the Fellow in collaboration with Eisenhower Fellowships’ assigned program officer. It requires thoughtful effort and time commitment on the part of the Fellow prior to departure for the U.S. to ensure optimal opportunities for productive exchange of ideas and experience in the individual’s professional field.
Eisenhower Fellowships will invite one candidate per year from any given country to participate in the Multi-Nation Program. To ensure a demonstrated level of leadership experience plus numerous years of subsequent contribution to society, the preferred age for an Eisenhower Fellow is between 35 and 42 years, with 32-45 acceptable. A Fellow must have fluent English and be able to articulate and communicate ideas effectively not only in his or her professional field, but also with a wide range of Americans. Interpreters cannot be provided.
Spouses are invited to participate in the program if they are fluent in English and participate for at least 3 weeks of the program, including either the Opening or Closing Seminar. Children are not permitted to accompany the Fellow or spouse on program.
Significant previous experience in the United States is not necessarily a disadvantage in the selection process; however, other things being equal in a decision between strongly qualified candidates, the Selection Committee will favor applicants for whom there would be the most “value added” in terms of new or additional U.S. exposure.
A Fellow must agree to return to his or her country at the end of the Fellowship period, in accordance with U.S. law.
Eisenhower Fellowships places strong emphasis on the Statement of Purpose and Program Design sections of the application. Therefore, the Statement of Purpose should include the nature of your professional and leadership interests and what you hope to accomplish during the Fellowship period for yourself and for your country. The Program Design section should delineate the nature of appointments desired and the specific issues that you wish to address in these meetings. This segment of the application helps to confirm the extent to which you might benefit from the program and forms the basis for initial research and planning undertaken by the Program Officer to develop your program. It therefore becomes a vital part of the program itself.
