Con la presencia de la Presidenta de la República, Michelle Bachelet; la presidenta del Senado, Isabel Allende, y el Ministro de Energía, Máximo Pacheco, la empresa estadounidense de energía solar, First Solar, instaló el primer panel solar de la planta “Luz del Norte” de 141 MWac (megavatios de corriente alterna).

El proyecto está ubicado a 58 kilómetros al norte de la ciudad de Copiapó, y se espera que esté en plena capacidad en diciembre de 2015, fecha en que se convertirá en la planta solar más grande de Latinoamérica. Producirá suficiente energía para proveer con electricidad a más de 174 mil hogares, lo que evitará emisiones de C02 equivalentes a más de 185.283 toneladas métricas por año.

With the President of the Republic, Michelle Bachelet; the President of the Senate, Isabel Allende; and the Minister of Energy, Máximo Pacheco in attendance, the US solar energy company First Solar has inaugurated the first installed panel at its “Luz del Norte” solar power plant of 141 MWac (megawatts of alternating-current).

The project is located 58 kilometers north of the city of Copiapó, and is expected to reach full capacity by December 2015, at which point it will become the largest solar plant in Latin America. It will produce enough energy to supply more than 174,000 homes with power, thereby avoiding CO2 emissions equivalent to 185,283 metric tons a year.
