Desde mediados de julio, ocho equipos de empresas e instituciones de Gobierno asentadas en Chile han estado compitiendo en El Grande Debate Corporativo 2010, organizado por AmCham. La final del concurso anual de debates en inglés se llevará a cabo el 18 de agosto en las oficinas del diario El Mercurio, que auspicia el evento.

Los equipos (de Codelco, D&S, Direcon, Hotel Sheraton, Parque Arauco, Ripley, Seguros Interamericana y 3M) recibieron clases de inglés y oratoria antes de participar en la competencia.

A los equipos se les exige debatir en favor o en contra de distintos temas tales como: “El programa de reconstrucción para quienes se vieron afectados por el terremoto de febrero debe basarse en garantías crediticias y créditos gubernamentales, y no en regalos en efectivo”; “Los aeropuertos, hospitales y colegios chilenos deben tener estándares de construcción sustancialmente más altos para soportar desastres naturales como los terremotos”; “Es necesario aprobar de manera inmediata la legislación que permita al sector privado recibir incentivos tributarios para invertir en la reparación de sitios patrimoniales nacionales que se vieron afectados por el terremoto”; y “Es necesario aprobar la legislación que exija a las empresas de seguro liquidar siniestros por daños generados por terremotos y otros desastres naturales en un plazo máximo de 60 días”.

Since mid-July, eight teams from Chilean companies and government institutions have been competing in the annual Great Corporate Debate competition organized by AmCham. The final will be held at the offices of El Mercurio newspaper, which is sponsoring the event, on August 18.

The teams (from Codelco, D&S, Direcon, Hotel Sheraton, Parque Arauco, Ripley, Seguros Interamericana and 3M) received training in English and public speaking before taking part in the competition.

The teams are required to debate for or against such moots as: “The reconstruction program for those that suffered in February’s earthquake must be based on
government loans and credit guarantees and not cash gifts”; “Chilean airports, hospitals, and schools must have substantially higher standards of construction to withstand natural disasters such as earthquakes”; “Legislation needs to be passed immediately allowing the private sector to receive tax incentives for investing in the repair of national heritage sites damaged by the earthquake”; and “Legislation needs to be passed requiring insurance companies to settle claims for damage from earthquakes or other natural disasters within a maximum of 60 days.”
