Dear Friend:

As more terrible news comes out of Chile – 1.5 million homeless, 799 deaths, 132 aftershocks of magnitude 5.0 or greater and the destructive force of a killer tsunami that roared ashore – we are reminded that our neighbors are suffering.

Chile needs help and the Pan American Development Foundation is mobilizing support for urgent humanitarian relief for earthquake victims.

PADF, the natural disaster relief arm of the Organization of American States (OAS), is working with its on-the-ground partners to get the relief to the most affected communities. It is also coordinating with OAS offices and the Chilean mission to the OAS.

In addition to requesting support for general relief efforts, PADF is also dedicating special attention to the heavily damaged children’s medical centers called Coaniquem, which provide surgeries and rehabilitation to thousands of young people. Coaniquem’s facilities are in the hard-hit areas and have been knocked out of service at a time when they are urgently needed.

Your cash donation to PADF will make a difference. You have four easy, safe ways to donate to the Chilean relief efforts:

1. Online: Visit www.PanAmericanRelief.org and click on the button “Make a Donation for Chile”
2. Toll-free: Call 24 hours a day, seven days a week (877) 572-4484 and use your Visa or MasterCard
3. Bank: Deposit or wire money to a special account at Citibank in
Washington, D.C. Account Number: 15488659. ABA Routing Number: 254070116
4. Mail: Checks can be mailed to the Pan American Development Foundation, 1889 F Street, NW, Second Floor, Washington, D.C. 20006. Please note Chile Relief.

In addition to cash, PADF is seeking in-kind donations that include the following:

o Satellite telephones and other communications equipment
o Water purification equipment, including for converting salt water to drinking water
o Electric generators
o Emergency shelter packages, including tents
o Field hospital, portable dialysis machines, medical equipment and supplies
o Portable dining hall tables

Offers of in-kind assistance should be directed to Pilar Heraud: [email protected] or (202) 458-6155

The Pan American Development Foundation is a non-profit organization that focuses on economic development, enhancing civil society and responding to natural disasters. Established in 1962 by the OAS, last year PADF programs reached more than 5.6 million people in 18 countries. (www.padf.org). In the 1960s, PADF was awarded Chile’s prestigious “Orden al Mérito Bernardo O’Higgins” for its response to a massive earthquake.

Please contribute to PADF today and help Chileans to overcome this devastating earthquake.

Sincerely,

John Sanbrailo
Executive Director
