[:es]A la ceremonia asistieron el agente de chile ante la corte internacional de justicia de la haya, José Miguel Insulza; el Subsecretario de Relaciones Exteriores, Edgardo Riveros; el Ministro de la Corte Suprema, Pedro Pierry Arrau, y alumnos de las cinco universidades participantes de la competencia.
Con una cena de gala en la que estuvieron presentes las principales autoridades en materia de justicia y representantes de importantes estudios de abogados del país, la Cámara Chileno Norteamericana de Comercio, AmCham Chile, celebró su décimo aniversario como organizadora del Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition en Chile, reconocido torneo de derecho internacional donde estudiantes universitarios defienden en inglés un caso hipotético, ante un tribunal que simula ser la Corte Internacional de Justicia de La Haya.
En la oportunidad, se presentó a los cinco equipos participantes de la versión 2016, provenientes de distintas casas de estudios -Universidad de Chile, Universidad Católica, Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, Universidad de Valparaíso y Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez-, los que entre el 22 y 28 de enero se enfrentaron en distintas rondas de debate.
Durante el encuentro, la presidenta de AmCham Chile, Kathleen Barclay, enfatizó en el rol que la Cámara busca cumplir al acercar a los nuevos profesionales a entidades extranjeras. “En AmCham estamos convencidos que el relacionamiento entre Chile y Estados Unidos debe ampliarse a la educación”. Señaló que la formación de nuevos profesionales exige intercambio de experiencias y la competencia Jessup se convierte en una gran oportunidad de intercambio multicultural para todos los participantes, y eso los ha motivado a organizar el evento desde 2006.
Por su parte, el gerente general de AmCham Chile, Roberto Matus, se detuvo en la importancia de la preparación de los participantes y resaltó los resultados que se pueden obtener. Por ejemplo, destacó que el equipo ganador del año 2015 de la Universidad Católica logró adjudicarse el segundo lugar en la gran final. “Con este triunfo, Chile se consolidó como el tercer país latinoamericano en obtener un importante resultado en esta competencia, después de Colombia y Venezuela”, sostuvo.
En la ceremonia los participantes recibieron el saludo -a través de un videodel decano de la Washington College of Law (WCL) de American University, Dr. Claudio Grossman, quien destacó que la competencia ayuda a mejorar el dominio del idioma inglés, y el conocimiento del derecho internacional, simulando casos reales, palabras a las que se sumó el socio y fundador de Grasty Quintana Majlis & Cia., Michael Grasty.
El agente chileno ante la Corte Internacional de Justicia de La Haya, José Miguel Insulza, enfatizó en la relevancia que supone la incorporación de nuevas herramientas en el mundo de hoy, cada vez más competitivo y en el caso de Chile, cada día más presente en el debate internacional.
“La práctica del derecho internacional hoy es un tremendo avance y es fundamental que nuestros abogados estén preparados para conocer y aplicar las normas”, señaló el también ex Secretario General de Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA).
Los ganadores
Tras un reñido último debate con estudiantes de la Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, el equipo de la Universidad Católica de Chile, compuesto por Nahuel Acevedo, Luis Francisco Rodríguez, Danitza Eterovic, Tomás Gothe y Vicente Karmelic, obtuvo el primer lugar nacional y la oportunidad de presentarse en la gran final del torneo en Washington D.C. y en el que participan equipos de más 90 países. El equipo ganador fue apoyado por los coachs Sebastián Zárate y Guillermo del Campo.

El equipo de la UC también obtuvo los reconocimientos de Best Memorial y Runner Up Best Oralist, (Tomás Gothe). En tanto, el equipo de la Universidad de Chile fue reconocido con las distinciones Best Oralist (Isabel Cholaky) y Espíritu Jessup.

The Chilean-American Chamber of Commerce, AmCham Chile, has held a gala dinner to celebrate its tenth anniversary as organizer of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition in Chile. More commonly known as Jessup, the competition is a distinguished international tournament in which law students defend, in English, a hypothetical international legal case in a mock court designed to recreate the International Court of Justice.
The gala itself was attended by a range of prestigious guests from across the Chilean legal field, and included the presentation of the five teams that participated in the 2016 edition of Jessup. In terms of the competition itself, the different rounds of debates were held between 22 and 28 January and participant teams came from the Universidad de Chile, the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, the Universidad de Valparaíso, and Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez.
During the gala, the President of AmCham Chile, Kathleen Barclay, stressed the role of the Chamber in seeking to build links between young professionals in Chile and distinct foreign bodies. She stated that, “at AmCham, we are convinced that the relationship between Chile and the United States should be broadened to include education”. Barclay added that the formation of new professionals demands the sharing of experiences and that the Jessup competition was a great opportunity for all participants to engage in a multicultural exchange, which is precisely what has motivated the Chamber to organize the event since 2006.
The General Manager of AmCham Chile, Roberto Matus, emphasized the importance of the competition in terms of the professional development of its participants, highlighting the potential results that can arise from their participation. For example, he noted that the winning Chilean team from 2015, from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, obtained second place in the grand final of the global version of the debate. “Following this success, Chile became only the third Latin American country to secure a significant placing in the competition, after the previous examples set by Colombia and Venezuela” he said.
As part of the ceremony, participants were presented with a video message from the dean of the American University Washington College of Law (WCL), Dr Claudio Grossman. In the message, he stressed how the competition can help to improve participants’ English proficiency and knowledge of international law by simulating real legal cases. These sentiments were also reflected in the words of Michael Grasty, partner and founder of the Chilean law firm, Grasty Quintana Majlis & Cía.
José Miguel Insulza, Chilean Agent to the International Court of Justice and former Secretary General of the Organization of American States, referred to the importance of learning new skills in today’s increasingly competitive world, and how this is particularly the case in Chile given the country’s growing international reputation.
“The practice of international law today represents tremendous progress and it is essential that our lawyers are fully prepared to understand and apply the relevant rules”, he stressed.
The winners
Following a hard-fought debate with students from Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, the team from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, composed of Nahuel Acevedo, Luis Francisco Rodríguez, Danitza Eterovic, Tomás Gothe and Vicente Karmelic, secured first place. They will now move on to represent Chile in the grand final of the competition in Washington D.C., alongside teams from an additional 90 countries. The winning team was supported by its coaches, Sebastián Zárate and Guillermo del Campo.
