El mes pasado, se celebró el Día de Acción de Gracias en Estados Unidos, el inicio tradicional de la temporada de fiestas. Los estadounidenses se detuvieron por un momento para recordar la buena fortuna de sus ancestros al descubrir y desarrollar una nueva tierra y para dar gracias por sus bendiciones personales. Pasaron tiempo con sus familias y amigos, revisaron lo que se había logrado y se aprontaron para las celebraciones de fin de año y para el que ya se aproxima.

Nosotros en AmCham creemos que es importante detenerse y agradecer. Estamos agradecidos por el éxito de nuestra misión en promover el comercio y las inversiones entre Chile y Estados Unidos. Por tener gobiernos, tanto en Chile como en Estados Unidos, con la visión necesaria para entender la importancia clave de estos temas, así como el compromiso político para desarrollar un marco -el Tratado de Libre Comercio entre Chile y EE.UU.- que garantiza reglas claras para el futuro.

Agradecemos que haya habido gente tan talentosa en ambos lados de la mesa de negociación, como para que el acuerdo haya significado un incremento de más del 130% en el comercio bilateral: un éxito para la gente de ambas naciones. A un nivel más básico, las empresas socias de AmCham agradecen un entorno comercial que, en general, durante los 87 años de la existencia de la Cámara ha sido abierto y amable con la inversión y las oportunidades de comercio con socios estadounidenses.

Ha sido un honor y un privilegio trabajar en un país que, particularmente durante los últimos 30 años, ha desarrollado un sólido marco político y económico, que ha significado tanto para su gente, incluyendo -de manera más importante- una reducción de más del 50% en los niveles de pobreza.

Creemos que es particularmente importante a estas alturas -con tanta crítica en los medios de comunicación, sobre la corrupción y con la enorme falta de optimismo que hay por las menores tasas de crecimiento- hacer una pausa y agradecer por lo lejos que ha llegado Chile y, al mismo tiempo, dar gracias particularmente por la calidad del liderazgo, tanto político como empresarial, del país que -estamos seguros- encontrará el camino correcto hacia adelante.

Los temas que se están discutiendo son serios y potencialmente fatales para Chile si no se abordan con rapidez, decisión y transparencia. Tenemos fe en que el pueblo chileno con su fuerte compromiso y amor por su país diseñará en conjunto un futuro aún más prometedor. Por ello, estamos tremendamente agradecidos.

El directorio de la AmCham también quisiera aprovechar esta oportunidad para agradecer a nuestros miembros por su compromiso, su tiempo, su apoyo y por sus ideas. Es la participación activa de nuestros socios lo que refleja la fortaleza subyacente de la Cámara. Esto sólo es posible gracias al sobresaliente liderazgo de nuestro gerente general, Jaime Bazán, y del dedicado equipo que encabeza. ¡Muchas gracias a todos ustedes!

Esperamos ansiosos nuevas oportunidades en el 2007: nuevas posibilidades para el comercio y la inversión entre Estados Unidos y Chile. Late last month, Thanksgiving Day was celebrated in the United States - the traditional kick-off to the holiday season. Americans stopped for a moment to remember the good fortune of their ancestors in discovering and developing a new land and to give thanks for their own individual blessings. They enjoyed time with their families and friends, reviewing what had been achieved and looking forward to holiday celebrations and the upcoming year.

We at AmCham believe it is important to stop and to give thanks. We are thankful for the success of our mission to promote trade and investment between Chile and the United States. For having governments in both Chile and the U.S. which had the foresight to understand the critical importance of these issues and had the political commitment to develop a framework - the Chile-U.S. Free Trade Agreement - which ensures clear rules for the future.

We are thankful that there were such talented people on both sides of the negotiating table that the agreement has meant an increase of over 130% in two-way trade - a success for the people of both countries. On a more basic level, the member companies of AmCham are thankful for a business environment which, overall, during the 87 years of the Chamber’s existence has been open and friendly to investment and trade opportunities with U.S. partners.

It has been an honor and a privilege to work in a country which, particularly over the last 30 years, has developed such a solid political and economic framework and which has meant so much for its people including, most importantly, an over 50% reduction in poverty.

We believe it is particularly important at this point in time - with so much criticism in the media regarding corruption and with such a lack of optimism regarding slowing growth rates - to pause and to be thankful for how far Chile has come and, at the same time, to be particularly thankful for the quality of the business and political leadership in Chile which, we are sure, will find the right path forward.

The issues being discussed are serious and potentially fatal for Chile if not dealt with quickly, decisively and with transparency. We have faith that the Chilean people with their strong commitment and love of their nation will, together, design an even more promising future. For this, we are most thankful.

The AmCham Board of Directors would also like to take this opportunity to thank our members for their commitment, their time, their support and for their ideas. It is the active participation of our members that reflects the underlying strength of the Chamber. This is only possible with the outstanding leadership of our CEO, Jaime Bazán, and with the dedicated staff which he leads - many thanks to you all.

We look forward to new opportunities in 2007 - new opportunities for trade and investment between the United States and Chile.
