El 29 de noviembre, el director ejecutivo de AmCham, Rodrigo Ballivián, asistió a un almuerzo en honor del ex vicepresidente de Estados Unidos, Al Gore, realizado en el restaurante Maldito Chef en Santiago.

Gore visitó Chile como invitado de Common Pitch, festival de emprendimiento, innovación social y sustentabilidad originado en Estados Unidos. Common Pitch -celebrado este año por primera vez en Chile- organizó un concurso para emprendedores chilenos que encarnaran estos conceptos con un premio para el ganador de US$35.000 en efectivo.

También participaron en el almuerzo María Paz Epelman, consejera consultiva de AmCham y vicepresidenta de asuntos públicos y RSE de VTR; Jorge Rodríguez, CEO de Deloitte; y Estanislao Peña, presidente de Nextel Chile.

En el almuerzo, Gore se refirió a su visión de “capitalismo sustentable” a diferencia del actual modelo económico basado en el crecimiento inmediato, el que a su juicio ha causado una creciente desigualdad en la distribución de la riqueza. Para ser sustentable y dejar de “pedir prestado al futuro”, las empresas deben considerar los costos ambientales de sus acciones, afirmó. Más tarde ese mismo día, Gore dio un discurso en el Parque Bicentenario en frente a miles de espectadores el que abarcó estos mismos temas.

On November 29, AmCham’s executive director, Rodrigo Ballivián, attended a lunch in honor of the former Vice President of the United States, Al Gore, at the restaurant Maldito Chef in Santiago.

Gore was in Chile at the invitation of Common Pitch, a festival of entrepreneurship, social innovation and sustainability that originated in the United States. Held in Chile for the first time this year, Common Pitch organized a competition for Chilean entrepreneurs that embody these concepts, with the winner taking home US$35,000 in cash.

Also present at the lunch was María Paz Epelman, a member of AmCham’s advisory board and vice-president of public affairs and CSR of VTR; Jorge Rodríguez, CEO of Deloitte, and Estanislao Peña, president of Nextel Chile.

At the lunch, Gore discussed his vision of “sustainable capitalism”, as opposed to the current economic model based on short-term growth, which he said has caused growing inequality in the distribution of wealth. To be sustainable, and stop “borrowing from the future”, businesses must consider the enrivonmental costs of their actions, he said. Later the same day, Gore gave a speech at Parque Bicentenario in front of thousands of spectators which touched on the same issues.
