Following Wurman’s decision to sell his rights in the organization in 2002, TED has been owned by Chris Anderson, creator of the non-profit Sapling Foundation, whose own mantra is, “strengthening the power of ideas to change the world”.

Currently, the TED conference is held once a year in Vancouver, Canada, in which more than 70 speakers come together to give presentations of no more than 18 minutes each. In addition to the original themes of technology, entertainment and design, speeches now cover a broad range of areas relating to science, business, entrepreneurship and social issues. The next conference is due to take place between 15 and 19 February 2016.

Associated with the annual conference in Canada is TED Global, an initiative that replicates the model in different places around the world. The last staging of this event was in Copacabana, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The international success and interest generated by TED speeches has led to the emergence of additional and related off-shoots. One of these is TEDx, which is based on independent events aligned to the annual conference and staged by independent organizers, who can obtain a free license granted by TED.

For example, universities have been the main driving force in Chile behind these types of events, including the universities Universidad del Desarrollo, Diego Portales, Federico Santa María, de Viña del Mar, and de la Frontera. In addition to these events, activities have also been organized in Valparaiso and Concepcion, including the very first of these; TEDxPatagonia. Furthermore, in December 2015, the first TEDxLaPincoya was held in the Santiago municipality of the same name. The event was led by José Manuel Moller, founder of the start-up Algramo, which sells products like lentils and washing detergent, in bulk, in independent convenience stores throughout La Pincoya.

Of the conferences organized in Chile, TEDxSantiago, which is free of charge to attend, has been the most popular. The first of these was held in 2012 under the name, The Success of Failure. It brought together 14 speakers across 3 sessions and was attended by 250 people, with 1,000 more watching via streaming.

In the second edition, entitled The Beauty of Sharing (2013), there were 13 speakers, more than 700 attendees and another 2,000 watching via streaming. The 2014 version, named The Impossible Possible, had 14 speakers, 350 attendees and more than 2,000 watching via streaming.

Juan Pablo Cornejo, a member of the TEDxSantiago team, says that the organization has aimed to provide a different touch to the event, with a more social outlook. The idea, he notes, is for experts from different areas who would not usually have the chance to highlight their work, to come together in the same space. For example, the rescue diver Germán Recabarren, who spoke about his life and experience of being born and raised on Chile’s Juan Fernandez island.

“We have consolidated a different model of TED”, says Cornejo, “and maybe that’s why it’s more attractive. We bring together renowned and successful people from areas like science and technology with others who run foundations or social initiatives”.

He explains that the operating methodology, once the free license from TED has been secured, consists of verifying the speakers by presenting their profiles to the official organization. He adds that his team maintains relationships with the organizers of other TED activities held in Chile, which, in turn, generates opportunities for discussion and consultation.

Alonso Oyarzún, Chief Executive Officer of Panóptiko, as well as a speaker at the 2015 TED Global conference in Guadalajara, Mexico, says that the goal of these events is, “to provide exposure for the people who are thinking about starting a particular project”. He continues by saying that the conferences, “are cross-cutting, because they seek to motivate people, pushing them to dare: it isn’t just a source of inspiration for those who already have their projects up and running”.

Panóptiko is a company specializing in consultancy in, and production and execution of audiovisual materials and services. Oyarzún explains that his team uses some of the talks internally as successful case studies, especially those that address issues which stimulate its people’s creativity and are relevant to their area of work. “They are a good source of inspiration for both businesspeople and entrepreneurs, and their success around the world is mainly down to the participants and organizers in the different places, as in the case of Guadalajara”.

The key to success

Among the activities promoted by the official organization is the TED Fellows Program. This initiative is an interdisciplinary collaboration that selects 40 people from around the world to participate in the TED conference or in TED Global, based on their achievements and potential impact. The program offers access to an exclusive private network of change-makers, unique skill-building workshops, and mentoring from world-renowned experts.

Camilo Rodríguez-Beltrán, academic from the Universidad del Desarrollo and TED Fellow, believes that the success of the TED talks is due to their, “format, which incorporates a process of looking for new ideas with a performance or story-telling element”.

He claims that this trend has now permeated both organizations and universities. “The difference with these talks is that they are not only motivational, but they also express sound ideas about how far new trends in technology, social sciences and design can go in terms of new ways of thinking. (They also promote) small companies with new ideas and business models that are given a platform to incentivize people to become involved in different areas”.

One of the most interesting aspects of TED is the extent to which its conferences have gone viral. They have achieved phenomenal success in the online environment, with the internet proving to be an extremely useful tool with which to spread the messages. Nevertheless, not all the conferences staged in Toronto are available online, as curatorial work is also conducted to determine the most outstanding activities.

An example of this online success is, according to statistics from www.ted.com, the 36 million web-based visits to the conference, “Do schools kill creativity”, by British education specialist Ken Robinson; in addition to the 29 million views of, “Your body language shapes who you are”, by the social psychologist Amy Cuddy.

Undoubtedly, this model has established itself as a source of inspiration for entrepreneurs, and Chile is no exception. According to Cristián López, executive director of the Chilean Association of Entrepreneurs (Asech), these conferences have had an impact on entrepreneurs themselves, as well as the business community in general. “TED talks have succeeded in structuring a discussion format which generates inspiration and a vision of the future. In this way, it is a great support to the entire ecosystem”.

It should be noted that Chile has produced some notable presenters, some of whom have participated in activities undertaken in different universities. “We even have Chilean speakers who have been invited to present at international conferences. There is a good range of entrepreneurs (in Chile) who have successfully applied this methodology and gained international recognition (as a result)”, says López.

The diversity of its issues and formats covered is the key factor in the success with which TED has penetrated the business world. The public does not only have the option of attending the live events in-person in order to hear the talks. Rather, they can simply connect to the internet, turn on Netflix or YouTube, or even listen to the radio program TED Radio Hour, broadcast by the Chilean stations Duna and Zero, to access the hundreds of talks available. Without a doubt, and within this context, the groups to have fully maximized the content produced by TED have been those relating to the world of academia and entrepreneurs.

TED Radio

In 2013, TED Talks adopted a new format, with the launch of TED Radio Hour on American public radio. The radio program itself broadcasts extracts from different talks, grouping them together depending on their particular content.

In 2015, Grupo Dial became the first Spanish-language radio in the world to transmit TED Radio Hour, in Chile, via the radio stations Zero and Duna. The shows cover issues based on criteria and selection made from the broadcaster, including topics considered to be of a particular interest for the audience.

Francisco Spencer, creator of Grupo Dial, says that the decision to transmit the show is based on the need to, “generate creative context, explore new formats, and offer our audience attractive alternatives. In addition, there is the question of the added risk and ability to take a gamble on interesting projects, and, as a media format, to accept the responsibility of supporting (the spread of) knowledge and education”.

The broadcaster, which began transmitting in March 2015, secured a license for a one-year period, on a renewable basis, which Spencer sees as a great success.

“Supporting the talks is a way of disseminating ground-breaking ideas, cutting-edge knowledge and potential initiatives for the future. (The aim) is to connect with what is being discussed in the world and to open up new networks. Then there are the stories and examples of success, most of which come from entrepreneurs”, he notes.[:]

["post-9480","news","type-news","status-publish","hentry

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
