The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory is a partner in the Giant Magellan Telescope, a planned 24.5-meter diameter segmented telescope that will be constructed at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile.\u00a0 When built, this telescope will image the sky with ten times the sharpness of the Hubble Space Telescope and will make dramatic contributions to some of the biggest questions of our times.\u00a0 Chile is one of only a few places in the world where this type of astronomical research can happen and the Smithsonian is proud of its long scientific and cultural history with Chile.\n<\/p>\n

Dr. Pell is a strong and articulate advocate for science research and makes a compelling case for investment in astronomy.\u00a0 She will be accompanied by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory’s director, Dr. Charles Alcock.\u00a0\u00a0 Dr. Alcock is equally elegant in his statements and writings about the future of human understanding of the cosmos and the role that the Giant Magellan Telescope will play in the coming decades.\u00a0 While in Santiago, Dr. Pell and Dr. Alcock will also be meeting with government officials, establishing relationships with Chilean counterparts and connecting with the university community.\u00a0 They are also hoping to schedule meetings with individuals and groups that might be interested in learning more about the Giant Magellan Telescope or the Smithsonian.<\/p>\n
