\nIn the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake, fire destroyed much of the instructional laboratory space and equipment belonging to the Universidad de Concepci\u00f3n (UdeC) Faculty of Chemistry. The resulting loss of access to important pedagogical resources meant that many promising undergraduate students have missed opportunities that would have otherwise been available to them prior to the disaster. The Chemistry Faculties at UdeC and Clemson have developed an innovative student exchange program that would allow UdeC students to travel from Concepci\u00f3n to Clemson University for a four-week academic and cultural exchange program. During the visit, the students will utilize scientific instruments and teaching laboratories at Clemson that are currently not available to them at home due to the earthquake. The program will initially be limited to six UdeC students and one faculty advisor traveling to Clemson, but in future years a bilateral exchange including Clemson students traveling to UdeC is planned.<\/p>\n
The academic program will include hands-on experience with laboratory instruments and facilities which are available at Clemson University, but currently not at UdeC.\u00a0 The equipment and laboratory space will be available because the first semester of the Chilean academic year is roughly coincident with the normal summer break taken by US students.\u00a0 Cultural activities in the proposed program would include recreational activities (e.g. river rafting, hiking excursions), tours of local chemical manufacturing facilities, and seminar presentations by local academic and industry leaders.\u00a0 English language assistance will be provided by a Clemson student with English as a Second Language (ESL) experience.<\/p>\n
Other notable aspects of the proposed program include the following:
\n\u00b7\u00a0The proposed program will provide UdeC students with an international experience in the context of their degree program.\u00a0 This program will provide a professional global awareness in a location that extends the international experiences available to most UdeC students.
\n\u00b7\u00a0Contacts made during the program will be especially important for UdeC students who wish to pursue post-graduate studies abroad, particularly in the US.\u00a0 We anticipate that students who participate in the program will be more likely to consider post-graduate study abroad.\u00a0 In addition, applications from program participants for Chilean government fellowship support of their post-graduate studies will be significantly strengthened by the students\u2019 international experience.
\n\u00b7\u00a0Chilean firms and educational institutions will benefit from the enhanced technical training and cultural awareness gained by UdeC students in the program.\u00a0 This aspect of the program will be especially important as the UdeC chemistry facilities are rebuilt.<\/p>\n
Estimated program cost is $21,000 US, which corresponds to a $3000 US program fee for each UdeC student participant and for one UdeC faculty participant.\u00a0 This fee will cover all housing and dining costs for four weeks includes an allocation of $1500 US towards round-trip air fare between Santiago Chile and Atlanta, Georgia.\u00a0 Clemson would arrange local transportation and will make all housing and dining hall arrangements.\u00a0 The program cost includes a $500 US allocation per participant for local program expenses, to include an allocation for laboratory supplies and a modest payment for a Clemson student to assist with the program. In lieu of funds to purchase airline tickets, we would welcome donor purchase of air transport using accumulated frequent flyer program points. Delta makes daily direct flights from Santiago to Atlanta.<\/p>\n
