Debate occurs in many arenas:<\/SPAN><SPAN><BR><\/SPAN><\/P><br \/>\n<UL><br \/>\n<LI><SPAN>In politics in recent years, debates have come to be associated with televised programs at which political candidates present their own and their party\u2019s views in response to questions from the media or members of the audience.<BR><BR><\/SPAN><\/LI><br \/>\n<LI><SPAN>Politicians use debate to present the formal presentation of various viewpoints on matters before the House.<BR><BR><\/SPAN><\/LI><br \/>\n<LI><SPAN>Competitive debate, as in the case of The Great Corporate Debate, is a competition commonly engaged in at the high school and college level and is popular in English-speaking countries around the world, most notably in South Africa, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia.<\/SPAN> <\/LI><\/UL><br \/>\n<P>&nbsp;<\/P><br \/>\n<DIV><SPAN>In all cases, each side is attempting to win the approval of a designated audience, in our case the judges. An important aspect of debate is the ability to debate from any position \u2014 similar to how a lawyer must argue on behalf of their client, even if the facts are against them.<BR><BR><SPAN style=\"FONT-STYLE: italic\">What is purpose of the competition?<\/SPAN><BR><BR>It is estimated that only 2% of Chileans speak English at a business-appropriate level. In an ever-more globalized economy, English skills are essential to compete. The purpose of these debates is to highlight the importance of English to the business community.
