This technology seeks to replicate certain mental capacities of human beings – like reason, learning, processing language – but using computers.

Although it is an area under development, some advances are already being used to make sense of the huge amounts of data which have inundated the world in recent years. Some actors are taking advantage of these advances for business reasons.

The origin of these technologies lies in the growing wave of digital information stemming from the so-called “Internet of things”. According to Juan Pablo Gómez, Engineering Manager at Cisco, this phenomenon means the growth of devices connected to the internet. It forms part of the widespread increase in the number of mobile devices, social media and the growth of video online.

According to Cisco’s Visual Networking Index report, internet traffic data will surpass the zettabyte in 2016 – meaning one billion terabytes, or 250 billion DVDs. During 2013, an estimated 207 petabytes of data were generated every month in Chile alone. To get an idea of the scale of what this means, one petabyte (1,000 terabytes) of songs on an MP3 would take 2,000 years to play in its entirety.

What can be done with so much volume? “Data on its own is not information, it’s just a collection of numbers”, says Carlos Busso, President of the Chilean Association of Information Technology Companies (ACTI). The aim is to generate knowledge, which has driven the development of smart systems that can conduct quick analyses. This means a better understanding of what is happening in a business and the ability to react accordingly. According to a report by the consultancy firm IDC into managing and analyzing this Big Data, the technology market will reach US$32.4 billion in 2017, growing to an annual rate six times greater than all remaining information technologies.

Artificial brains

The United States is one of the countries to have placed the greatest emphasis on the development of smart data analysis technology. A report commissioned by the White House and published in May highlights the “striking and large-scale opportunities for freeing up previously inaccessible knowledge of existing sets of data”.

Companies like IBM, Microsoft, Oracle and Cisco, among others, have worked so that supercomputers are capable of generating useful information analyzed via data bases, even information published by users on social media.

It is now possible “to use information that is normally ignored for decision-making purposes”, says Juan Diego Arboleda, Sales Consultant at Oracle.

The most advanced industries in terms of having implemented these systems on the global scale are the banking, telecommunications and retail sectors. These are areas that usually “take past information relating to their clients and, based on this data, devise the most appropriate market offer”, explains Mauricio Arriagada, Server and Platform Development Manager at Microsoft.

One of the best known systems in this area is Watson, a supercomputer developed by IBM that once competed against humans on the famous US game show Jeopardy. The striking thing about Watson is that it was created to understand “natural language” – not only numbers and key words, but also the meaning behind a question or phrase.

As Jorge Mujica, Head of Technology at IBM, explains, a particular Chilean investment bank has taken full advantage of this ability in order to conduct a semantic study of the Bloomberg news agency. This analysis, in addition to the historical performance of a share, becomes an interesting tool for “knowing where to invest tomorrow”, says Mujica.

Predicting results

According to Mujica, there are four levels of intelligence that can currently be achieved: descriptive, evaluative, predictive and inductive. The first two are simpler, whereby the machine is capable of describing a scenario and determining whether what has taken place is positive or negative for the company.

Predictive intelligence, on the other hand, allows for the anticipation of future events based on past behavior. It even suggests courses of action for correcting and changing the foreseen result, if this happens to be negative.

This level “is something far more advanced, which big businesses are testing and which, probably, other companies will explore in the next five to ten years,” says Arriagada, from Microsoft, a company which already offers this type of service via its (internet) cloud.

Artificial Intelligence in Chile

Adoption of these systems is still relatively uncommon in Chile. According to Mujica, from IBM, in this country “only 5% of data is being used to identify patterns, whereas in the United States and Europe it exceeds 30%”.

One of the reasons for the delay in adopting this technology is the cost, which has limited the implementation of these systems in large businesses, says Carlos Busso of ACTI. Nonetheless, supply of these services is growing via the cloud, whereby the customer simply rents the necessary infrastructure and, as a result, implementation costs are reduced.

Microsoft recently launched two tools along these lines which are available in Chile: PowerBI and Azure Intelligent Systems, where the client only pays for the use of the system. Oracle and Cisco, on the other hand, base their services on the open-source platform Apache Hadoop, used by companies like Yahoo and Facebook for analysis purposes.

The projection is that by increasing the supply of these services via cloud, their take up by Chilean industry will grow rapidly. According to the IDC, investment in information technologies will rise by 9% in Chile in 2014 to US$8 billion, in which technology services will be the biggest growing area, increasing by some 15%.

“In Chile we have to take it very seriously, because it’s something that could really help in terms of efficiency and in optimizing all production processes in the country”, notes Busso, from ACTI.

Data on its own is simply numbers. The important thing to recall is the industry that it has generated, and the industry being generating around it. In this sector, the application of artificial intelligence technologies for the analysis and exchange of information is turning data into a new type of oil – a discovery that is undoubtedly already changing the way of doing business around the world.

Intelligent mining

Mining could take advantage of the use of smart systems in Chile. For example, it could be used to reduce interruptions in the production process by anticipating potential problems with machinery. As Mauricio Arriagada, Server and Platform Development Manager at Microsoft explains, the goal is that faults are resolved automatically, or at least reduced as much as possible rather than having to stop the systems in order to correct any existing errors.

Despite this, improvements to the practice of working with data are required in the mining industry, according to Jorge Mujica, Head of Technology at IBM. “There are many black boxes, they operate independently of one another, and data cannot be extracted from inside. This will be an obstacle in achieving such a level of analysis”, he states.

Happier customers

Retail is one of the most advanced areas in the use of data, striving to ensure smarter supplies are offered to its customers. The idea is get to know the customer better, understanding what purchases they have made, what products they have looked to buy online, what type of comments they have made on social media, among others. “Based on all this knowledge, you can offer something more related to what they need”, says Juan Diego Arboleda, Senior Sales Consultant at Oracle Chile.

On the other hand, Juan Pablo Gómez, Engineering Manager at Cisco, points out that retail can take advantage of sensor systems for controlling inventory in real time and for tracing the movement of its products, without people having to do it manually.

More informed telecommunications

This sector can take advantage of artificial intelligence for making demand predictions for the network, planning its infrastructure, and providing a better quality of service to avoid a potential loss of clients, says Mauricio Arriagada, Server and Platform Development Manager at Microsoft.

In addition, it is possible to analyze metadata from calls made by users (to whom the call was made, for how long, from where, etc.), in order to devise personalized marketing campaigns or offers in line with the needs of the user in real time.

["post-5248","news","type-news","status-publish","hentry

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
