Como alumno permanente de todo lo que es y representa \u201cser chileno\u201d, he llegado a algunas conclusiones que me gustar\u00eda compartir con ustedes, leales seguidores de esta columna tan llena de informaci\u00f3n vital para una vida sana. M\u00e1s que \u201cconclusiones\u201d, creo que ser\u00eda un poco m\u00e1s humilde decir \u201cunos puntos de referencia\u201d. Por los a\u00f1os que tengo en Chile (soy gringo), no estoy criticando, ni alabando, ya que soy muy consciente que soy parte del problema, parte de la gloria y parte de la soluci\u00f3n. <\/p>\n
Nota importante: cuando hablo de chileno o chilenos, tambi\u00e9n estoy hablando de chilena y chilenas, pero \u00a1me da lata perder espacio repitiendo una palabra solamente para intentar ser \u201cpol\u00edticamente correcto\u201d!, pues siempre ha sido mi intenci\u00f3n ser pol\u00edticamente incorrecto.<\/p>\n
\u00bfEn qu\u00e9 momentos son los chilenos realmente unidos? \u00a1Cuando juega la Roja! \u00a1Durante la Telet\u00f3n! o cuando existe una amenaza externa, como la demanda boliviana por un acceso soberano al Pac\u00edfico. Aparte de estos ejemplos, en casi todo momento somos separados por alg\u00fan conflicto interno, ya sea interno al pa\u00eds o a los individuos, familias o grupo social.<\/p>\n
Siempre hablamos colectivamente de las buenas intenciones y la voluntad de dar m\u00e1s de m\u00ed, apoyar m\u00e1s, contribuir m\u00e1s -siempre y cuando sean \u201clos otros\u201d
los que cumplen con estas intenciones-, pues \u201cme gustar\u00eda ayudar, pero mi pareja est\u00e1 enferma\u201d, \u201cestoy construyendo una casa en la playa\u201d, \u201cno me sobra plata con 9 hijos estudiando\u201d… Chile es el pa\u00eds de la esquizofrenia: \u201ces que \u2026\u2026 pero\u201d. \u00a1Es una enfermedad que cuesta mucho tratar!<\/p>\n
Aunque Chile es miembro de la Organizaci\u00f3n para la Cooperaci\u00f3n y el Desarrollo Econ\u00f3micos (OCDE), parece que existen tendencias medibles en las cuales no queremos mejorar. La propiedad intelectual, por ejemplo. S\u00f3lo hay que pasar un verano en la costa para saber que es posible ver pel\u00edculas pirateadas antes de su fecha de lanzamiento en Estados Unidos\u2026 Yo jam\u00e1s comprar\u00eda una pel\u00edcula pirateada y si alguien me invita a ver una pel\u00edcula en
su casa siempre pregunto si es legal.<\/p>\n
El leg\u00edtimo derecho de cuestionar a los pol\u00edticos. En este tema me gustar\u00eda ver m\u00e1s, no menos cuestionamiento. Te\u00f3ricamente tengo prohibido hablar de pol\u00edtica, pero creo que es diferente hablar de los pol\u00edticos\u2026Postulan voluntariamente y luego cuando son elegidos reclaman si son cuestionados. No entiendo, \u00a1si es parte del juego! Un alto nivel de cuestionamiento es un requerimiento, pero s\u00f3lo si la calidad del lenguaje usado es brillante -con o sin garabatos-. Por lo tanto, veo a los chilenos algo pasivos y quiero ver muchos m\u00e1s cuestionamientos hacia los pol\u00edticos de todo los colores.<\/p>\n
Un d\u00eda coment\u00e9 a un amigo que los chilenos somos muy malos conductores y \u00e9l me ret\u00f3: \u201cc\u00f3mo puedes decir eso, no es cierto. El nivel de accidentabilidad es muy bajo si t\u00fa consideras que vamos demasiado r\u00e1pido, hablando por tel\u00e9fono sin manos libres, ignorando los sem\u00e1foros, pegando (suavemente) a los ni\u00f1os sentados atr\u00e1s sin cintur\u00f3n de seguridad para que se callen y, en m\u00e1s de algunos casos, maquill\u00e1ndose\u201d. \u00c9l s\u00ed tiene un buen punto.<\/p>\n
\u00bfEstoy algo negativo? Quiz\u00e1s s\u00ed, pero por el otro lado, el chileno trabaja todas las horas necesarias para mejorar su situaci\u00f3n econ\u00f3mica y la de su familia. La tradici\u00f3n de \u201cun trabajo de por vida\u201d ya no existe y el promedio de a\u00f1os en un trabajo ha bajado a 5 y puede descender m\u00e1s. El chileno es mucho m\u00e1s m\u00f3vil y acepta oportunidades de estudiar o trabajar fuera del pa\u00eds: \u00a1ingl\u00e9s para todos!<\/p>\n
Pero, existe un fen\u00f3meno en la psique del chileno: si las cosas van bien, \u201cno puede durar mucho m\u00e1s, \u2026\u201d; y si las cosas andan m\u00e1s o menos mal, \u201cte lo dije y ser\u00e1 a\u00fan peor el pr\u00f3ximo mes\u201d. El precio de la bencina es siempre m\u00e1s alto, aunque actualmente baja a veces y comparado con pa\u00edses europeos sigue \u201cbajo\u201d.<\/p>\n
Puedo seguir examinado nuestra forma de ser, \u00a1pero hay que esperar mi libro! Reci\u00e9n pas\u00f3 algo realmente incre\u00edble, una posibilidad de cambiar nuestro mundo: el pueblo de Galvarino se declar\u00f3 biling\u00fce -espa\u00f1ol y mapudung\u00fan-; quiz\u00e1s el inicio de una revoluci\u00f3n en \u201cpro\u201d de la coexistencia. S\u00f3lo una gotita en una tasa llena de frustraciones, pero \u00bfla gotita capaz de cambiar el agotamiento de opciones entre chilenos y sus pueblos originarios? Sin una buena pol\u00edtica pa\u00eds para aumentar significantemente la descentralizaci\u00f3n, en Santiago vamos a morir de sed o de smog\u2026pero me da lo mismo, pues tengo caba\u00f1a en la costa y caba\u00f1a en el sur\u2026<\/p>\n

Santiago Eneldo<\/strong> <\/p>\n As a lifelong student of all that it is and represents to \u201cbe Chilean\u201d, I have arrived at some conclusions that I would like to share with you, the loyal readers of this column, so full of crucial information for a healthy life. More than \u201cconclusions\u201d, I think it would be a little more modest to say \u201cpoints of reference\u201d. For all the years I have spent in Chile (I am a Gringo), I am not criticizing, or praising, as I am very conscientious of the fact that I am part of the problem, part of the glory and part of the solution. <\/span><\/p>\n An important note: when I refer to Chilean or Chileans (\u201cchileno\u201d or \u201cchilenos\u201d in Spanish, i.e. the masculine version of the noun\/s), I am referring to both sexes (the female versions are \u201cchilena\u201d and \u201cchilenas\u201d), but for the sake of those of you reading this in Spanish, I refuse to waste space repeating both the masculine and feminine versions just for the sake of being \u201cpolitically correct\u201d! After all, it has always been my intention to be politically incorrect.<\/p>\n Under what circumstances are Chileans really united? When la Roja (the national soccer team) play! During the Telet\u00f3n! Or when there is an external threat, like the Bolivian lawsuit for sovereign access to the Pacific Ocean. Apart from these examples, during almost all other times we are divided by some kind of internal conflict, whether nationally or at the individual, family or social group levels.<\/p>\n We always talk collectively of good intentions and the willingness to give more of oneself, support more, contribute more \u2013 always and whenever \u201cothers\u201d fulfil these intentions \u2013 like \u201cI\u2019d like to help, but my spouse is sick\u201d, \u201cI\u2019m building a beach house\u201d, \u201cI\u2019m broke with my 9 children all at university\u201d\u2026 Chile is a schizophrenic country: \u201cwell it\u2019s just\u2026 but\u201d. This is a sickness that is really difficult to treat! <\/p>\n Although Chile is a member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), it seems there are measurable trends in which we just have no desire to improve. Intellectual property, for example. You only have to spend a summer at the beach to realize that you can watch pirate movies before they are on general release in the United States\u2026 I would never buy a pirate movie and if anyone invites me to watch one in their house, I always ask whether it is a legal copy.<\/p>\n The legitimate right to question politicians. In this area, I would like to see more not less questions asked. Theoretically, I am banned from speaking about politics, but I think it is very different to talk about politicians\u2026 They voluntarily apply and later when they are elected they complain if they are questioned. I do not understand, it is part of the game! A large amount of questioning is important, but only if the quality of the language used is outstanding \u2013 with or without curse words. Consequently, I see Chileans as somewhat passive and I want to see far more questioning of politicians of all persuasions.<\/p>\n One day I commented to a friend that we Chileans are really bad drivers, and he responded by saying: \u201cHow can you say that, that\u2019s not true. The accident rate is really low if you consider how fast we\u2019re going, speaking on the cell phone without hands free, ignoring traffic lights, hitting (gently) the children sitting in the back without their seatbelts fastened so they fall down and, more than once, putting make-up on\u201d. He has a good point.<\/p>\n Am I a little negative? Perhaps, but on the other hand, the Chilean works as much as possible to improve his or her economic situation and that of their family. The traditional \u201cjob for life\u201d no longer exists and the average time spent in one job has fallen to five years, and may decrease even farther. The Chilean is far more mobile and willingly accepts the chance to study or work in a new country: English for everyone!<\/p>\n But, there is a phenomenon within the Chileanpsyche: if things turn out well, \u201cthey can\u2019t possibly last much longer\u2026\u201d: and if things are more or less bad, \u201cI told you so and it\u2019ll be even worse next month\u201d. The price of gasoline is always going up, although it does actually sometimes fall, and compared to European prices it is still \u201clow\u201d.<\/p>\n I could go on examining our ways and means, but you will have to wait for my book! Something really incredible has happened recently, a real chance to change our world: the town of Galvarino has declared itself bilingual \u2013 Spanish and Mapudungun; perhaps this is the start of a \u201cpro\u201d coexistence revolution. It is only a little drop in a glass full of frustrations, but perhaps the little drop is capable of changing the exhausted options between Chileans and the country\u2019s indigenous peoples. Without a decent national policy of significantly increasing decentralization, we are all going to die in Santiago of thirst or from the smog\u2026 but I really do not care, because I have a cabin at the beach and a cabin in the South\u2026<\/p>\n Yes, my glass is always half full.
