\u00daltimamente ha sido pan de cada d\u00eda leer en las revistas y los diarios, as\u00ed como escuchar a los pol\u00edticos y los comentaristas de la tele y la radio, hablar de la clase media chilena: que es el motor del pa\u00eds, que va a sufrir por la reforma tributaria y los cambios en la educaci\u00f3n, etc.<\/p>\n
Pero pregunto: \u00bfsoy de la clase media?, \u00bfy t\u00fa?, \u00bfc\u00f3mo se puede definir la clase media en Chile y saber si ya llegaste o no; o quiz\u00e1s peor, llegaste a ser uno de los \u201cricos\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\n Seg\u00fan Econom\u00eda y Negocios online de El Mercurio (Claudia Ram\u00edrez Friderichsen; 26 de agosto de 2012): \u201cHoy de la clase media, porque debo trabajar bastante como para mantener una vida relativamente holgada sin grandes lujos\u201d. Con estas palabras, Carmen Urbina (46 a\u00f1os) responde por qu\u00e9 se considera de clase media. Una respuesta que bien podr\u00eda calzar a todos y cada uno de los chilenos. Porque 84% de la poblaci\u00f3n -14,2 millones de 17 millones de habitantes-, se considera de clase media.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Lo que me fascina es que 84% de los chilenos se considera de clase media\u2026. S\u00ed, \u00a1fascinante! Por lo tanto, tenemos a solo 16% entre ricos y pobres, pero equivalente a 2,8 millones.<\/span><\/p>\n Un amigo contest\u00f3 a mi pregunta \u201c\u00bfqui\u00e9n es de clase media?\u201d: \u201ctoda familia que gana m\u00e1s de un mill\u00f3n de pesos mensuales\u201d. Otra persona amiga, aument\u00f3 el monto a mill\u00f3n y medio mensual\u2026.<\/p>\n Pero tengo mis dudas y por eso hice mi propio an\u00e1lisis. Pas\u00e9 3 d\u00edas seguidos cerca de La Moneda pregunt\u00e1ndole a la gente: \u00bferes clase media? Lo milagroso es que en mi encuesta muy personal y frontal recib\u00ed todo tipo de respuestas, desde lo m\u00e1s usual \u201cno s\u00e9, pero s\u00ed s\u00e9 que ando atrasado\u201d y \u201cno, soy rico, tengo a la Roja\u201d y \u201c\u00bfpor qu\u00e9 te importa, \u2026..?\u201d m\u00e1s una palabra que no se usa en esta revista\u2026 Sin embargo, casi 90% me contest\u00f3 con \u201cs\u00ed, por supuesto\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n Parece que ser clase media no es cuesti\u00f3n de ingresos familiares, est\u00e1 m\u00e1s relacionado con lo que tienes (pasivos), lo que haces (activos) y lo que piensas (flujo). Por ejemplo, \u00bfhay que tener auto? \u00a1S\u00ed! Ojal\u00e1 dos, o auto m\u00e1s moto\u2026 \u00bfHay que tener casa? \u00a1Por supuesto que s\u00ed! \u00bfDe un piso o dos? \u00a1Dos! Aunque si es un bungal\u00f3 de 250 m2 eso vale\u2026 Pero \u00bfQu\u00e9 auto?, \u00bfpuede ser cualquier marca? \u00a1NO! \u2013 hay marcas y modelos que son exclusivamente de la clase media y otros no. Ahora, otra vez, no puedo hablar aqu\u00ed de las marcas preferidas por la clase media, para no mostrar preferencias por alguna y \u00a1menos si no es estadounidense!<\/span><\/p>\n Otro asuntos que \u201cmarcan la diferencia\u201d son: calidad de colegio, algunos equipos de f\u00fatbol, pero apoyo total para la Roja, vacaciones tomadas en verano e invierno, no tener m\u00e1s de $500.000 de deuda en tarjetas de cr\u00e9dito, capacidad para comer fuera de casa una vez por mes \u2013y comer un \u201ccompleto\u201d no vale, tener un perro de buena sangre o dos gatos finos, tomar vino dos veces por semana a un precio de entre $3.200 y $4.200 por botella, tener bicicleta para deporte y no para transporte; saber c\u00f3mo usar el Transantiago con combinaci\u00f3n de colectivo, bus y Metro sin perderse, ir al cine una vez al mes, etc.-.<\/span><\/p>\n Luego encontr\u00e9 que existe un gran orgullo en declararse \u201cclase media\u201d sin saber si realmente se est\u00e1 \u201cclasificado\u201d; es un asunto de \u201cmind set\u201d y deseo. Bueno, si 84% de la poblaci\u00f3n se declara \u201cclase media\u201d por supuesto que vamos (s\u00ed, soy muy clase medista) a pagar caro por los cambios que queremos ver en nuestro querido Chile. It is the engine of the country, it will suffer the most from the tax reform and educational changes, and so on.<\/p>\n But what I want to ask is: Am I middle class? Are you? How do you define the middle class in Chile? And how do you know if you belong to it or not? Or, perhaps even worse, whether you are now one of the \u201crich\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\n According to the online Economy and Business section of El Mercurio (Claudia Ram\u00edrez Friderichsen; August 26 2012): \u201cToday I belong to the middle class, because I have to work hard to maintain a relatively comfortable life without all the frills\u201d. This was the response of Carmen Urbina (46 years old) to the question of what class she belongs to and why. This answer could well apply to any and every Chilean. That is because 84% of the population \u2013 14.2 million out of 17 million \u2013 consider themselves to be middle class.<\/span><\/p>\n What fascinates me is that 84% of Chileans consider themselves be middle class\u2026 Yes, it is fascinating! That means we are left with just 16% who are rich and poor, equivalent to 2.8 million people.<\/span><\/p>\n A friend of mine answered my question of \u201cWho is middle class?\u201d by saying \u201cany family earning more than a million pesos a month\u201d. Another friend responded by raising the amount to one and a half million a month\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n But I have my doubts, which is why I did my own research. I spent three days in a row outside La Moneda Presidential Palace asking people, \u201cAre you middle class?\u201d The amazing thing is that in my highly personal and direct survey I received a wide range of replies. They varied from the most common \u201cI don\u2019t know, but I do know that I\u2019m in a hurry\u201d to \u201cno, I\u2019m rich, I have La Roja\u201d (referring to the Chilean national soccer team) and \u201cwhat\u2019s it to you\u2026 ?\u201d, as well as a couple of words that cannot be printed in this magazine\u2026 However, almost 90% responded \u201cyes, of course\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n It seems that being middle class is not a question of family income, but actually more related to what you have (liabilities), what you do (assets) and what you think (cash flow). For example, is it necessary to have a car? Yes! Hopefully two, or a car plus a motorbike\u2026 What about a house? Of course! One storey or two? Two! Although, if you have a one storey bungalow which is 250m2, that counts\u2026 But, what type of car do you have? Can it be any old brand? NO! There are makes and models that are exclusively reserved for the middle class and others that are not. Now, once again, I am unable to discuss which brands are preferred by the middle class here, so as not to show bias for one or another, and in case it is not an American one!<\/span><\/p>\n Other aspects that \u201cmake the difference\u201d are: quality of the children\u2019s school; soccer teams, but total support for La Roja; taking vacations in summer and winter; not having more than CLP$500,000 in credit card debt; the ability to eat out once a month (and eating hotdogs does not count); having a purebred dog or two pedigree cats; drinking wine priced between $3,200 and $4,200 a bottle twice a week; having a bicycle for sports purposes and not using it as a means of transport; knowing how to use Transantiago in combination with shared taxis, buses and the Metro without getting completely lost; going to the cinema once a month, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n I then discovered that people are incredibly proud to declare themselves \u201cmiddle class\u201d without knowing if they are really \u201cqualified\u201d to do so. It is a question of mind set and personal desire. Well, if 84% of the population declares itself to be \u201cmiddle class\u201d, then of course we (yes, I am very middle class-ist) are all going to pay dearly for changes that we want to see so badly in our beloved Chile.
