Mi maravillosa madre y sus amigos estaban muy entusiasmados con la idea de \u201cenvejecer con gracia\u201d y, en gran medida, \u00a1hicieron exactamente eso! Un enfoque muy anglosaj\u00f3n frente al envejecimiento: muy orgulloso y decidido a no \u201cser una molestia\u201d. Ahora son en su mayor\u00eda solo historia, pero podemos aprender de ellos y quiz\u00e1s yo puedo aprender de ellos.<\/p>\n
Me siguen diciendo que \u201cact\u00fae acorde a mi edad\u201d y encuentro que esto es extremadamente dif\u00edcil, porque solo puedo \u201cser de la edad que siento\u201d. Como me siento joven y viril (bueno, relativamente), a\u00fan trato de hacer todo como si fuera no solo \u201cjoven de coraz\u00f3n\u201d, sino que joven de cuerpo tambi\u00e9n. Esto genera todo tipo de dramas\u2026<\/p>\n
Por ejemplo, quisiera quedarme hasta (muy) tarde en los matrimonios, que -en Chile- duran hasta el amanecer o hasta que simplemente no queda nada m\u00e1s que agua para beber. Me acabo de comprar una nueva bicicleta pistera y mi familia insiste en que esto es un \u201csuicidio sobre ruedas\u201d. A diferencia de la mayor\u00eda de los chilenos no creo que la temporada de esqu\u00ed se acabe con las celebraciones de la Independencia (el 18 de septiembre); creo que la temporada termina cuando \u00a1no hay m\u00e1s nieve! Los centros de esqu\u00ed tienen que cerrar cuando su flujo de pasajeros (o la l\u00ednea de nieve) cae por debajo de cierto punto, pero donde hay nieve hay esqu\u00edes. Voy a subir una monta\u00f1a (relativamente) alta en diciembre. En agosto estuve acampando a -15\u00baC. \u00bfSoy rudo? \u00a1De ninguna manera! Me gustan mis \u201clujos\u201d, pero tambi\u00e9n adoro la adrenalina que se siente cuando corres bajando una gran pendiente.<\/p>\n
Ah, pero ustedes no tienen idea de qu\u00e9 edad tengo… He aqu\u00ed una pista: Tengo tres a\u00f1os de diferencia con Bruce Springsteen, \u00a1qu\u00e9 tipo! Si estuvieron en Santiago el 12 de septiembrey se perdieron su conciertoentonces se perdieron algo bastante extraordinario. No solo m\u00fasica genial, sino que un joven de 64 a\u00f1os tocando como si fuera su debut. Tres horas y media y nunca dej\u00f3 el escenario. A medianoche su agradecido p\u00fablico, incluidos mi hijo y yo, estaba listo para decir gracias y buenas noches; pero Bruce no, no El Jefe. \u00a1Su bis dur\u00f3 otra hora! No iba a dejar que nos fu\u00e9ramos; \u00c9L quer\u00eda entregar m\u00e1s y en sus \u00faltimas dos canciones estuvo solo en el escenario, su potente \u201cbanda\u201d de 16 miembros ya se hab\u00eda ido al Hyatt. \u00a1Me acost\u00e9 a las dos y media de la ma\u00f1ana!<\/p>\n
Quiero vivir como El Jefe y entregar todo lo que tengo\u2026 hasta el final. Nada de \u201cenvejecer con gracia\u201d para m\u00ed. Esto me lleva a un segundo tema: la donaci\u00f3n de \u00f3rganos. En virtud de una nueva legislaci\u00f3n en Chile somos todos donantes a menos que firmamos una declaraci\u00f3n notarial neg\u00e1ndonos a donar nuestros \u00f3rganos por una buena raz\u00f3n; como guardarlos para otra vida. Bueno, d\u00e9jenme decirles esto directamente: me encanta la idea de dejar que otros hagan el mejor uso posible de mis \u00f3rganos una vez que yo nos los use m\u00e1s, o sea como cuando se est\u00e1 \u201cdefinitivamente muerto\u201d, sin pulso, fallecido, pasado a mejor vida\u2026 Sin embargo, mi Plan Maestro consiste en asegurarme de que mi generosidad sea rechazada sobre la base de \u201c\u00f3rganos sin valor\u201d. S\u00ed, como El Jefe quiz\u00e1s, pretendo seguir d\u00e1ndole por tanto tiempo como pueda. Voy a usar al m\u00e1ximo todas las actividades a las que tenga acceso y cuando finalmente haya terminado pueden rematar los restos.<\/p>\n
Por favor no piensen que estoy siendo arrogante o ego\u00edsta o una prima donna. My wonderful mother and her friends were very keen on \u201cgrowing old gracefully\u201d and, by and large, they did just that! A very Anglo-Saxon approach to aging: very proud and determined not to \u201cbe a bother\u201d. They are now mostly just history but we can learn from them, well maybe I can learn from them.<\/p>\n
I keep being told to \u201cact my age\u201d and I find this extremely difficult because I can only \u201cbe the age I feel\u201d. As I feel young and virile (well relatively), I still try to do everything as if I was not just \u201cyoung at heart\u201d but young in body as well. This causes all sorts of drama\u2026<\/p>\n
For example, I like to stay (very) late at weddings which, in Chile, go on until sunrise or until there is simply nothing left to drink except water. I have just bought myself a new road bike and my family insists that this is \u201csuicide on two wheels\u201d. Unlike most Chileans I do not believe the ski season ends with the Independence Day celebrations (September 18th); I believe the season ends when there is no more snow! The ski centers have to close when their passenger flow (or snow line) gets below a certain point but where there is snow there is skiing. I will be climbing a (relatively) high mountain in December. In August I was camping out at -15\u00baC. Am I tough? No way! I like my \u201ccreature comforts\u201d but I also love the adrenaline rush that comes with a great downhill run.<\/p>\n
Ah, but you have no idea how old I am… Here\u2019s a clue: I have three years on Bruce Springsteen \u2013 what a guy! If you were in Santiago on September 12thand missed his concert then you missed something quite extraordinary. Not just great music but a 64-year old teenager performing as if it was his debut. Three and a half hours and he never left the stage. At midnight his appreciative audience, including my son and I, were ready to say thank you and goodnight; but not Bruce \u2013 not The Boss. His encore lasted another hour! He would not let us go; HE wanted to give more and for his last two songs he was alone on stage, his 16 strong \u201cband\u201d having gone back to the Hyatt. I got to bed at 2:30am!<\/p>\n
I want to live like The Boss and give it all I\u2019ve got\u2026 right up to the end. No \u201cgrowing old gracefully\u201d for me. This brings me to a second issue: organ donation. Under a new law we in Chile are all donors unless we sign a notarized affidavit declining to give up our organs for a good cause \u2013 such as saving another life. Well, let me give you this straight: I am delighted to let others make the best possible use of my organs once I have no further use for them \u2013 as in \u201cdefinitely dead\u201d, no pulse, departed, an absolute goner\u2026 However, my Master Plan is to ensure that my generosity will be rejected on the grounds of \u201corgans of no value\u201d. Yes, like The Boss perhaps, I plan to keep on going for as long as I can. I will max out on all the activities I have access to and when I am finally done you can auction off the remains.<\/p>\n
Please do not think I am being arrogant or selfish or a prima donna. I just want to squeeze the very best out of life because you never know when\u2026 So, for all you people worried about your retirement fund and legacies for the grandchildren, forget it and LIVE BIG.<\/p>\n
