El 13 de agosto, AmCham coauspici\u00f3 un desayuno en el Hotel Ritz-Carlton en Santiago para lanzar el Cap\u00edtulo Chileno de WomenCorporateDirectors (WCD). KPMG fue el anfitri\u00f3n del evento que cont\u00f3 con el patrocinio de la Sociedad de Fomento Fabril de Chile (Sofofa) y la Confederaci\u00f3n del Comercio y la Producci\u00f3n (CPC). Alrededor de 70 invitados asistieron al desayuno, incluidas muchas de las principales l\u00edderes empresariales de Chile. Los oradores del evento fueron el ministro de Econom\u00eda, Fomento y Turismo de Chile, F\u00e9lix de Vicente; la cofundadora de WCD Susan Stautberg; y la presidenta de AmCham y copresidenta de WCD en Chile, Kathleen Barclay.<\/p>\n
Entre los dem\u00e1s miembros fundadores del Cap\u00edtulo Chileno que asistieron al desayuno estuvieron las directoras de AmCham Sandra Guazzotti, Pamela Camus, Sandra Mir\u00f3 y Karen Poniachik. Andr\u00e9s Santa Cruz, presidente de CPC, tambi\u00e9n estuvo presente.<\/span><\/p>\n WCD es una organizaci\u00f3n de directoras corporativas con sede en Nueva York que cuenta con m\u00e1s de 2.500 miembros que forman parte de cerca de 4.000 directorios alrededor del mundo. El Cap\u00edtulo Chileno es el n\u00famero 54 que tiene la organizaci\u00f3n a nivel mundial y el quinto a nivel latinoamericano.<\/span><\/p>\n En su discurso, el ministro De Vicente entreg\u00f3 un panorama sobre la econom\u00eda y el mercado laboral de Chile. El funcionario de gobierno sostuvo que pese al crecimiento econ\u00f3mico razonablemente s\u00f3lido, la baja tasa de inflaci\u00f3n y el empleo casi pleno de Chile, la participaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s o menos baja de las mujeres en la fuerza laboral sigue siendo un desaf\u00edo importante.<\/span><\/p>\n Seg\u00fan la Encuesta CASEN del 2009, el porcentaje de chilenas con un empleo formal era de apenas el 42%, lo que se compara con un promedio del 53% en Latinoam\u00e9rica y del 65% en los pa\u00edses miembro de la Organizaci\u00f3n para la Cooperaci\u00f3n y el Desarrollo Econ\u00f3micos (OCDE).<\/span><\/p>\n El gobierno del presidente Sebasti\u00e1n Pi\u00f1era reconoci\u00f3 el problema y en el 2012 cre\u00f3 el Bono al Trabajo de la Mujer, destinado a mujeres de escasos recursos. Adem\u00e1s, programas como Capital Abeja han ayudado a las mujeres emprendedoras a conseguir financiamiento para iniciar peque\u00f1as empresas. Sin embargo, las mujeres siguen estando poco representadas en la alta gerencia de las compa\u00f1\u00edas chilenas, se\u00f1al\u00f3 el ministro De Vicente.<\/span><\/p>\n En el \u00edndice Ipsa de las 40 acciones m\u00e1s negociadas de Chile, 33 de ellas no tienen una sola mujer en sus directorios, destac\u00f3. Seg\u00fan el Banco Mundial, la participaci\u00f3n de las mujeres en los directorios corporativos en Chile es de apenas un 3,4%, lo que se compara con el promedio de 16% de las compa\u00f1\u00edas Fortune 500 en Estados Unidos.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cTenemos un gran desaf\u00edo como pa\u00eds\u201d, dijo. \u201cLos estudios demuestran que las compa\u00f1\u00edas con m\u00e1s de tres mujeres en sus directorios son mas rentables, que es algo que los l\u00edderes empresariales en Chile deber\u00edan considerar\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n Aumentar la productividad es clave para el desarrollo de Chile y las mujeres pueden desempe\u00f1ar un papel importante en esto, sostuvo. \u201cLa mejor manera de lograr un cambio en la productividad es mediante la inclusi\u00f3n de m\u00e1s mujeres\u201d, afirm\u00f3.<\/span><\/p>\n La siguiente oradora fue Susan Stautberg, quien agradeci\u00f3 a las copresidentas en Chile de WCD, Kathleen Barclay y Teresa Oliva, por organizar el lanzamiento. \u201cEste no es solo un tema de mujeres, este es un tema de competitividad global\u201d, asever\u00f3.<\/span><\/p>\n Stautberg destac\u00f3 el exitoso rescate de los 33 mineros en Chile en el 2010, el que afirm\u00f3 es un caso de estudio para l\u00edderes de todo el mundo cuando \u201clas apuestas, el riesgo y la incertidumbre son muy altas\u201d. La pr\u00f3xima reuni\u00f3n del Instituto Americano de WCD se llevar\u00e1 a cabo en noviembre en Fort Lauderdale, Florida, donde Kathleen Barclay representar\u00e1 al Cap\u00edtulo Chileno.<\/span><\/p>\n En sus comentarios de cierre, Barclay sostuvo que la participaci\u00f3n de las mujeres en directorios es clave para aumentar la competitividad de Chile y mejorar su gobierno corporativo. \u201cHoy en d\u00eda las respuestas no est\u00e1n claras y una buena pregunta puede hacer la diferencia\u201d, afirm\u00f3.<\/span><\/p>\n AmCham lidera el camino en este sentido. \u201cEn AmCham, estamos orgullosos de que nuestros miembros, que representan a un porcentaje importante del PIB de Chile, hayan elegido un directorio que est\u00e1 compuesto principalmente por mujeres\u201d, asever\u00f3 Barclay.<\/span><\/p>\n Pero esta es la excepci\u00f3n en Chile. Las mujeres de negocios tienen mucho que ofrecer en los directorios de las compa\u00f1\u00edas chilenas, pero muchas de ellas permanecen en el anonimato. The event was hosted by KPMG and supported by the Chilean Manufacturers\u2019 Association, Sofofa, and the Confederation for Production and Commerce (CPC). Around 70 guests attended the breakfast, including many of Chile\u2019s top women business leaders. The speakers were Chile\u2019s Minister of Economy, Development and Tourism, F\u00e9lix de Vicente, WCD Co-Founder Susan Stautberg, and AmCham President and WCD Co-Chair in Chile, Kathleen Barclay.<\/p>\n Other Founding Members of the Chilean Chapter in attendance included AmCham Directors Sandra Guazzotti, Pamela Camus, Sandra Mir\u00f3 and Karen Poniachik. Andr\u00e9s Santa Cruz, the president of CPC, was also present.<\/span><\/p>\n The WCD is a New-York based organization of women corporate directors with over 2,500 members who serve on close to 4,000 boards around the world. The Chilean Chapter is the organization\u2019s 54thchapter globally and its fifth in Latin America.<\/span><\/p>\n In his speech, Minister de Vicente gave an overview of Chile\u2019s economy and the labor market. He said that despite Chile\u2019s reasonably strong economic growth, low inflation and nearly full employment, the relatively low participation of women in the workforce remains a major challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n According to the 2009 CASEN survey, the percentage of Chilean women with formal employment was just 42%, compared to an average of 53% in Latin America and 65% in the OECD.<\/span><\/p>\n The government of President Sebasti\u00e1n Pi\u00f1era has recognized the problem and in 2012 it created a Women\u2019s Employment Bonus for low-income women. In addition, programs such asCapital Abeja(Bee Capital) have helped women entrepreneurs get funding to start small businesses. But women remain underrepresented in the top management of Chilean companies, said Minister de Vicente.<\/span><\/p>\n On Chile\u2019s IPSA Index of the 40 most heavily traded stocks, 33 of them do not have a single woman on their boards, he pointed out. According to the World Bank, the participation of women in senior management in Chile is just 3.4%, versus a global average of 16%.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe have a big challenge as a country,\u201d he said. \u201cStudies show that companies with more than three women on their boards are more profitable, which is something business leaders in Chile should consider.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Increasing productivity is key to Chile\u2019s development and women can play an important role in this, he said. \u201cThe best way to achieve a change in productivity is by including more women,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n The next speaker was Susan Stautberg, who thanked the WCD\u2019s Chile Co-Chairs, Kathleen Barclay and Teresa Oliva, for organizing the launch. \u201cThis is not just a women\u2019s issue, this is an issue of global competitiveness,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n She highlighted the successful rescue of the 33 miners in Chile in 2010, which she said is a case study for leaders around the world when \u201cthe stakes, risk and uncertainty are very high\u201d. Directors often face similarly difficult decisions she said, and the WCD aims to help women be better prepared for these situations.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWCD is one of the most powerful communities of women directors in the world,\u201d she said. \u201cOur members are the global business elite.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n In addition to a global network, the WCD is focused on education to improve board performance. Although WCD is based in the US, it recognizes that American companies can also learn from corporate best practices in other countries.<\/span><\/p>\n Stautberg invited members of the Chilean Chapter to take advantage of WCD\u2019s connections and events to network around the world. The next meeting of the WCD\u2019s Americas Institute will take place in November in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where Kathleen Barclay will represent the Chilean Chapter.<\/span><\/p>\n In her closing remarks, Barclay said that the participation of women on boards is key to increasing Chile\u2019s competitiveness and improving corporate governance. \u201cToday the answers are not clear and a good question can be the difference,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n AmCham is leading the way in this regard. \u201cAt AmCham we are proud that our members, who represent an important percentage of Chile\u2019s GDP, have elected a board that is mainly comprised of women,\u201d said Barclay.<\/span><\/p>\n But this is still the exception in Chile. Businesswomen have much to offer on the boards of Chilean companies, but too many of them remain anonymous.
