Creo que es un poco m\u00e1s que complicado ser gracioso cuando se trata de la muerte, aunque otros con mucho m\u00e1s talento han tenido \u00e9xito. Woody Allen siempre ha dicho que se opone a la muerte por principio\u2026<\/p>\n
Mientras escrib\u00eda estas columnas a lo largo de los a\u00f1os tuve la buena fortuna, y espero que ustedes tambi\u00e9n, de conocer los dibujos de Luis Goyenechea Saavedra, m\u00e1s conocido como Goy, quien recientemente falleci\u00f3 afectado por un c\u00e1ncer. Goy era una caricaturista brillante. Admir\u00e9 enormemente su trabajo, pero nunca nos conocimos; \u00a1nunca siquiera hablamos! Siento que fuimos socios en el humor, pero yo ten\u00eda la tarea m\u00e1s sencilla.<\/p>\n
Siempre he tenido la libertad de escribir sobre lo que sea que me interese o me divierta. Algunas veces cumplo con el plazo, a veces no y en ocasiones sorprendo al editor enviando un art\u00edculo incluso antes de que me lo pidan. Escribir es ya sea \u201cinspiraci\u00f3n\u201d o bien \u201ctranspiraci\u00f3n\u201d y admito libremente que he pasado por las dos.<\/p>\n
Goy, por otra parte, era un genio. En un plazo muy ajustado, leer\u00eda las divagaciones de este idiota eningl\u00e9sy luegousar\u00eda su extraordinaria imaginaci\u00f3n para traer a la vida mis trabajosos esfuerzos. Y cada una de las veces lo hizo con \u00e9xito.<\/p>\n
Voy a extra\u00f1ar a Goy enormemente y le deseo un viaje seguro hacia la paz y la plenitud. Tambi\u00e9n espero que contin\u00fae usando su gran talento para hacer que los que est\u00e1n m\u00e1s all\u00e1 sonr\u00edan y se r\u00edan.<\/p>\n
Como escribi\u00f3 Benjamin Franklin: \u201cEn este mundo no hay nada seguro, salvo la muerte y los impuestos\u201d. Bueno, a menos Goy no pagar\u00e1 m\u00e1s impuestos.<\/p>\n
Cuando abro el diario en la ma\u00f1ana, voy derecho a la p\u00e1gina de los obituarios. Si mi nombre no est\u00e1 ah\u00ed, me levanto sinti\u00e9ndome bastante reconfortado y enfrento el d\u00eda con un mesurado entusiasmo. En realidad, eso no es cierto: trato de enfrentar el d\u00eda con una enorme cantidad de entusiasmo, porque cuando abra el diario al d\u00eda siguiente mi nombre podr\u00eda estar ah\u00ed. En verdad, mi entusiasmo por la vida puede durar un d\u00eda entero, pero m\u00e1s seguido es reducido por alg\u00fan conductor tratando de poner fin a mi existencia por la m\u00e1s inocente de las razones: el sem\u00e1foro cambi\u00f3 a luz verde y en un nanosegundo no avanc\u00e9 tres metros\u2026<\/p>\n
Entonces, \u00bfc\u00f3mo ser\u00e9 recordado? \u00bfVoy siquiera a ser recordado? \u00a1No tengo ni la menor idea! En b\u00fasqueda del humor escrib\u00ed mi propio obituario hace algunos a\u00f1os, pero el editor se neg\u00f3 a publicarlo sobre la base de que estaba bastante vivo. Pobre excusa pens\u00e9. (Nota del editor: Se sugiri\u00f3 que el art\u00edculo saliera a la luz p\u00fablica si el autor se planificaba para estar fallecido al momento de la publicaci\u00f3n).<\/p>\n
Tambi\u00e9n tengo sentimientos sobre mi funeral: quiero estar ah\u00ed. Bueno, voy a estarah\u00ed\u2013por supuesto\u2013, pero quiero estar ah\u00ed como estar\u00eda \u201cvivo\u201d. Nada f\u00e1cil. Pero, \u00bfpor qu\u00e9 deber\u00eda perderme la \u00fanica ocasi\u00f3n en que todos van a decir cosas agradables de m\u00ed? No necesariamente ciertas, pero \u00a1agradables! Supongo que podr\u00eda fingir mi muerte y entonces asistir al funeral. Pens\u00e1ndolo bien, la conversaci\u00f3n fuera de la iglesia podr\u00eda no ser tan amable\u2026<\/p>\n
Cuando Alfred Nobel, el inventor suizo de la dinamita, ley\u00f3 por error su propio obituario (en realidad era su hermano el que hab\u00eda fallecido), el impacto de leer un art\u00edculo mayoritariamente negativo sobre su vida le permiti\u00f3 \u201ccambiar de rumbo\u201d y crear el Premio Nobel. Dudo que ustedes o yo tengamos esa posibilidad y, por tanto, de aqu\u00ed en adelante a hacer lo mejor que podamos y dar lo mejor de nosotros.<\/p>\n
Goy, te saludo y me pregunto que habr\u00edas dibujado para esta mezcla de elogio, s\u00e1tira, irreverencia y moderado humor. S\u00e9 que habr\u00eda sido maravilloso.<\/p>\n

As I have written these columns over the years it has been my, and I hope your, good fortune to know the drawings of Luis Goyenechea Saavedra, better known as Goy, who recently died of cancer. He was a brilliant caricaturist. I admired his work enormously but we never met; we never even spoke! I feel we were partners in humor, but I had the easier task.<\/p>\n
I have always had the freedom to write about whatever interests or amuses me. Sometimes I make the deadline, sometimes I do not and then sometimes I surprise the Editor by sending in a \u201cpiece\u201d, as it is known in the trade, before it is even asked for. Writing is either \u201cinspiration\u201d or \u201cperspiration\u201d and I freely acknowledge both.<\/p>\n
Goy, on the other hand, was a genius. On a very tight deadline, he would read the ramblings of this halfwitin Englishand then use his extraordinary imagination to bring my somewhat labored efforts to life. He succeeded every time.<\/p>\n
I will miss Goy enormously and I wish him a safe journey onwards to peace and fulfillment. I also hope that he will continue to use his great talent to make those above and beyond smile and laugh.<\/p>\n
As Benjamin Franklin wrote: \u201cIn this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes\u201d. Well, at least Goy will not be paying any more taxes.<\/p>\n
When I open the newspaper in the morning, I go straight to the Obits page. If my name is not there I get up feeling quite reassured and approach the day with measured enthusiasm. Actually, that is untrue: I try to approach the day with a massive amount of enthusiasm because when I open the paper the next day my name could be there. In truth, my enthusiasm for life can last a full day but is more often curtailed early on by some driver attempting to end my existence for the most benign of reasons: the traffic light has turned green and in a nanosecond I have failed to advance three meters\u2026<\/p>\n
So how will I be remembered? Will I even be remembered? I have absolutely no idea! In pursuit of humor I wrote my own obituary a few years ago, but the Editor refused to publish it on the grounds that I was still very much alive. Very poor excuse I thought. (Ed\u2019s note: It was suggested the piece could run if the author arranged to be deceased at time of publication)<\/p>\n
I also have feelings about my funeral: I want to be there. Well, I will bethere\u2013 of course \u2013 but I want to be there as in \u201calive\u201d. Not easy. But, why should I miss the one and only occasion when everyone will say nice things about me? Not necessarily true but all nice! I suppose I could stage my passing and then attend the funeral. On second thoughts, the conversation outside the church may not be so kind\u2026<\/p>\n
When Alfred Nobel, the Swiss inventor of dynamite, just happened to read his own obituary (it was actually his brother who had died), the impact of reading a largely negative review of his life allowed him to \u201cchange course\u201d and create the Nobel Prize. I doubt you or I will be given that chance and so it is onward, doing the best we can and giving the best of us.<\/p>\n
Goy, I salute you and wonder what you would have drawn for this mix of praise, satire, irreverence and mild humor. I know it would have been wonderful.<\/p>\n
