El 23 de mayo, AmCham celebr\u00f3 un seminario en el Hotel Hyatt de Santiago sobre c\u00f3mo hacer negocios en Florida. Adem\u00e1s de socios y directores de AmCham, el seminario cont\u00f3 con la asistencia de una delegaci\u00f3n comercial de Florida encabezada por el gobernador Rick Scott.<\/p>\n
El director de AmCham Michael Grasty inaugur\u00f3 el seminario y destac\u00f3 el creciente intercambio comercial entre Chile y Florida. Grasty sostuvo que la econom\u00eda de Florida, que tiene aproximadamente el tama\u00f1o de la de Turqu\u00eda, representa una importante oportunidad para las compa\u00f1\u00edas chilenas.<\/span><\/p>\n Con 19,2 millones de personas, pronto sobrepasar\u00e1 a Nueva York como el tercer estado m\u00e1s grande de Estados Unidos. Y cerca de un cuarto de su poblaci\u00f3n es hispanohablante. \u201cSomos un gran lugar para hacer negocios, porque somos un lugar f\u00e1cil para hacer negocios\u201d, dijo el gobernador Scott, quien estuvo a cargo del discurso central de un almuerzo celebrado tras el seminario.<\/span><\/p>\n El gobernador destac\u00f3 los esfuerzos de su administraci\u00f3n para crear empleos y los beneficios que presenta Florida para las empresas, los que incluyen bajos impuestos a la renta y su gran poblaci\u00f3n de habla hispana.<\/span><\/p>\n La m\u00e1xima autoridad estatal indic\u00f3 que las misiones comerciales a pa\u00edses como Chile son importantes para entablar relaciones. \u201cYa sea que se trate de una reuni\u00f3n con exportadores de fruta y les hagamos saber que somos una mejor alternativa que Filadelfia, o que les ayudemos a vender m\u00e1s de su salm\u00f3n\u201d, sostuvo.<\/span><\/p>\n En el seminario, Gary Swoope, secretario de comercio de Florida y presidente de Enterprise Florida, entreg\u00f3 una visi\u00f3n general de la relaci\u00f3n comercial entre Chile y Florida. \u201cHay una gran oportunidad para ampliar a\u00fan m\u00e1s el comercio y las relaciones de inversi\u00f3n entre nuestro estado y Chile\u201d, afirm\u00f3.<\/span><\/p>\n Swoope sostuvo que el intercambio comercial hab\u00eda alcanzado los US$7.700 millones hasta noviembre del 2012, lo que convierte a Chile en el s\u00e9ptimo mayor socio comercial de Florida. Los tres principales productos que Florida importa desde Chile son cobre, mariscos y ma\u00edz, mientras que sus tres principales exportaciones a Chile son piezas de aviones, m\u00e1quinas de procesamiento de datos y equipos de telecomunicaciones.<\/span><\/p>\n Las compa\u00f1\u00edas chilenas con presencia en Florida incluyen a socios de AmCham como Crystal Lagoons, LAN Airlines, Bci y la Universidad Adolfo Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez. Muchos de estos est\u00e1n ah\u00ed porque Florida ofrece un gran sector tur\u00edstico y una plataforma para que las empresas hagan negocios a lo largo de Estados Unidos. \u201cNuestra gente piensa globalmente y es biling\u00fce\u201d, coment\u00f3 Swoope.<\/span><\/p>\n Richard Biter, subsecretario de desarrollo de sistemas intermodales del Departamento de Transporte de Florida, se\u00f1al\u00f3 que el estado ocupa el primer lugar en Estados Unidos en t\u00e9rminos de infraestructura y que ha realizado importantes inversiones en el \u00faltimo tiempo en sus caminos y puertos mar\u00edtimos. Para aprovechar la reciente expansi\u00f3n del Canal de Panam\u00e1, Florida tambi\u00e9n ha dragado sus puertos para acomodar embarcaciones de mayor tama\u00f1o, dijo.<\/span><\/p>\n Con sus 15 puertos mar\u00edtimos y su proximidad a mercados en Am\u00e9rica Latina y el Caribe, Florida es la puerta de entrada a Estados Unidos para el mundo, pero tambi\u00e9n es la puerta a Latinoam\u00e9rica para Estados Unidos, indic\u00f3 Biter.<\/span><\/p>\n Florida no solo ofrece puertos eficientes, como Chile, tambi\u00e9n tiene una cultura pro negocios. Mat\u00edas Matte, gerente general de la compa\u00f1\u00eda de reciclaje de residuos Verdenova, que forma parte del grupo Coipsa, analiz\u00f3 su experiencia de comenzar una empresa en Florida. Matte destac\u00f3 las diferencias culturales entre Chile y Estados Unidos y asever\u00f3 que la clave para hacer negocios en Florida son \u201chonestidad, responsabilidad y respeto\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n Las empresas chilenas adem\u00e1s deber\u00edan estar preparadas para lidiar con temas tributarios en Estados Unidos, coment\u00f3 Macarena Navarrete, socia de Ernst & Young. Navarrete se\u00f1al\u00f3 que el convenio para evitar la doble tributaci\u00f3n -que fue acordado entre Chile y Estados Unidos pero que a\u00fan requiere la aprobaci\u00f3n parlamentaria en ambos pa\u00edses- ayudar\u00eda a facilitar que se realicen m\u00e1s inversiones.<\/span><\/p>\n Afortunadamente, las empresas chilenas pueden contar con los servicios de un banco chileno en Florida. Juan Segundo, director de banca corporativa y de inversi\u00f3n de Bci, se refiri\u00f3 a las operaciones del banco en Estados Unidos. Bci es el \u00fanico banco chileno que tiene presencia en Florida y se\u00f1al\u00f3 que su misi\u00f3n es apoyar a sus clientes chilenos en Estados Unidos.<\/span><\/p>\n Finalmente, Ana Gazarian, presidenta de Employee Mobility Solutions, hizo menci\u00f3n a c\u00f3mo las compa\u00f1\u00edas chilenas pueden prepararse de modo que su traslado a Estados Unidos avance sin sobresaltos, lo que incluye el preocuparse de la visa y los temas migratorios.<\/span><\/p>\n En general, el seminario fue muy exitoso y sirvi\u00f3 como una oportunidad para que los socios hicieran contactos. Claramente, Florida y Chile tienen mucho en com\u00fan, incluyendo el esp\u00edritu emprendedor de ambos pueblos. In addition to AmCham members and directors, the seminar was attended by a business delegation from Florida led by Governor Rick Scott.<\/p>\n AmCham Director Michael Grasty inaugurated the seminar and highlighted the growing trade between Chile and Florida. He said that Florida\u2019s economy, which is roughly the size of Turkey\u2019s, represents an important opportunity for Chilean companies.<\/span><\/p>\n With 19.2 million people, it will soon pass New York as the third biggest State in the United States. And around a quarter of these are Spanish-speakers. \u201cWe are a great place to do business because we\u2019re an easy place to do business,\u201d said Rick Scott, the Governor of Florida, who gave the keynote speech at a luncheon following the seminar.<\/span><\/p>\n He highlighted his administration\u2019s efforts to create jobs and the benefits of Florida for businesses, which include low income taxes and its large Hispanic population.<\/span><\/p>\n The Governor said that trade missions to countries like Chile are important for building relationships. \u201cWhether it\u2019s meeting with fruit exporters and letting them know we\u2019re a better alternative than Philadelphia, or helping you sell more of your salmon,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n In the seminar, Gary Swoope, Florida\u2019s Secretary of Commerce and president of Enterprise Florida, gave an overview of the business relationship between Chile and Florida. \u201cThere is a great opportunity to expand even more the trade and investment between our State and Chile,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n He said trade reached US$7.7 billion through November 2012, making Chile Florida\u2019s seventh biggest trading partner. Florida\u2019s top three imports from Chile are copper, seafood and corn, while its top three exports to Chile are airplane parts, data processing machines and telecommunications equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n Chilean companies with a presence in Florida include AmCham members Crystal Lagoons, LAN Airlines, Bci and Adolfo Iba\u00f1ez University. Many of these are there because Florida offers a large tourism sector and a platform for companies to do business throughout the US. \u201cOur people think globally and are bilingual,\u201d said Swoope.<\/span><\/p>\n Richard Biter, assistant secretary for Intermodal Systems Development at Florida Department of Transportation, said Florida is ranked number one in the US in terms of infrastructure and has made major investments recently in its roads and seaports. To take advantage of the recent expansion of the Panama Canal, Florida has also dredged its ports to accommodate larger ships, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n With its 15 seaports and proximity to markets in Latin America and the Caribbean, Florida is the gateway for the United States to the world, but it\u2019s also the gateway for Latin America to the United States, Biter said.<\/span><\/p>\n Florida doesn\u2019t just offer efficient ports, like Chile it also has a pro-business culture. Mat\u00edas Matte, CEO of the waste recycling company Verdenova, which is part of the Coipsa group, discussed his experience starting a business in Florida. He pointed out the cultural differences between Chile and the US and said the key to doing business in Florida is \u201chonesty, responsibility and respect\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n Chilean companies should also be prepared to deal with tax issues in the US, said Macarena Navarrete, a partner at Ernst & Young. She noted that the double taxation avoidance agreement, which has been agreed by Chile and the US but is pending approval in both countries, would help to facilitate more investment.<\/span><\/p>\n Fortunately, Chilean companies can count on the services of a Chilean bank in Florida. Juan Segundo, director of Corporate & Investment Banking at Bci, discussed the bank\u2019s operations in the US. Bci is the only Chilean bank with a presence in Florida and he said its mission is to support its Chilean clients in the US.<\/span><\/p>\n Finally, Ana Gazarian, president of Employee Mobility Solutions, spoke about how Chilean companies can prepare so that their move to the US goes smoothly, including taking care of visa and immigration issues.<\/span><\/p>\n Overall, the seminar was very successful and served as a networking opportunity for members. Clearly, Florida and Chile have much in common, including the entrepreneurial sprit of both peoples.
