Cuando se trata de Internet m\u00f3vil, lo esencial es la velocidad. Es por ello que las compa\u00f1\u00edas de telecomunicaciones de Chile se preparan para desplegar la cuarta generaci\u00f3n de comunicaciones m\u00f3viles, conocida como 4G, la que promete una conexi\u00f3n de Internet 10 veces m\u00e1s r\u00e1pida que su predecesora la red 3G, o de tercera generaci\u00f3n.<\/P>
\n
“Va a ser muy, muy bueno tanto para las personas como para las empresas\u201d, se\u00f1ala Gerardo Mu\u00f1oz, gerente general de Claro Chile, uno de los mayores proveedores m\u00f3viles del pa\u00eds y propiedad de la compa\u00f1\u00eda mexicana Am\u00e9rica M\u00f3vil. \u201cB\u00e1sicamente, esto significa m\u00e1s velocidad para navegar en Internet y m\u00e1s velocidad para los datos m\u00f3viles\u201d.<\/P>
\n
En el 2011, como parte de su plan para incrementar la calidad y cobertura de los servicios de Internet m\u00f3vil de Chile, el Ministerio de Transportes y Telecomunicaciones lanz\u00f3 una licitaci\u00f3n para frecuencias 4G en la banda de 2.600 MHz. Los adjudicatarios -Claro, Entel y Movistar- se anunciaron en julio del a\u00f1o pasado y se les exigi\u00f3 ofrecer servicios 4G al 98% del pa\u00eds para marzo del 2014.<\/P>
\n
Claro tom\u00f3 la delantera. La compa\u00f1\u00eda despleg\u00f3 en marzo un programa piloto de 60 d\u00edas para someter a prueba el terreno 4G y Mu\u00f1oz afirma que comenzar\u00e1 a ofrecer 4G a nivel comercial para junio de este a\u00f1o.<\/P>
\n
\u201cSer\u00e1 una gran mejora para la eficiencia y productividad de los sectores industrial, m\u00e9dico, automotor y m\u00e1s\u201d, sostiene Mu\u00f1oz.<\/P>
\n
El Gobierno de Chile espera que la nueva tecnolog\u00eda ofrezca a los chilenos una mejor conexi\u00f3n a Internet, dondequiera que se encuentren, y reduzca el costo de Internet m\u00f3vil y de l\u00ednea fija, pero primero es necesario ampliar la red 4G para manejar un mayor n\u00famero de usuarios.<\/P>
\n
\u201cVamos a adoptar de manera incipiente una tecnolog\u00eda que va a cambiar la industria\u201d, dice Claudio Hohmann, ex ministro de Transportes y Telecomunicaciones. \u201cVamos a ver un mont\u00f3n de nuevos servicios que ahora ni siquiera podemos imaginar\u201d.<\/P>
\n
C\u00f3mo 4G Cambia el Juego<\/STRONG><\/P> Entonces \u00bfqu\u00e9 ofrece la tecnolog\u00eda 4G a los usuarios? En parte, m\u00e1s velocidad -la 4G acelera la conexi\u00f3n de Internet de un tel\u00e9fono m\u00f3vil para competir con un PC y, a diferencia de la 3G, que separa voz y datos, trata todo como datos.<\/P> \u201cAbre un mundo de aplicaciones: telemedicina, ciudades m\u00e1s inteligentes, telecontrol (control remoto), c\u00e1maras de seguridad, mapas de seguridad y tr\u00e1fico\u201d, sostiene el subsecretario de telecomunicaciones de Chile, Jorge Atton.<\/P> En Chile, la tecnolog\u00eda 4G entregar\u00e1 velocidades al menos tan r\u00e1pidas como los servicios de banda ancha de l\u00ednea fija que actualmente se entregan por DSL o cable a los hogares, seg\u00fan Atton. La tecnolog\u00eda emplea el sistema LTE (Long Term Evolution), que lanza datos lo suficientemente r\u00e1pido para ver sin interrupciones videos en YouTube o Skype mientras uno camina por la calle, sin el desfase que puede causar horribles interrupciones en la conversaci\u00f3n. Un dedo puede navegar a trav\u00e9s de un sitio web interactivo en un tel\u00e9fono inteligente tan r\u00e1pido como el cursor en la mayor\u00eda de los computadores.<\/P> \u201c4G es mucho mejor de lo que la gente tiene en sus casas, de modo que las redes fijas van a tener que redoblar su juego, hacer mejores inversiones y elevar la calidad\u201d, afirma Atton.<\/P> La mayor competencia, tanto para proveedores de servicios m\u00f3viles como de redes fijas, tambi\u00e9n podr\u00eda abaratar los servicios de Internet, a\u00f1ade.<\/P> Sin embargo, la red 4G a\u00fan se encuentra en una etapa de prueba. En la prueba de Claro, cerca de 120 tel\u00e9fonos en selectos sectores de negocios de Santiago -Providencia, Las Condes y Huechuraba- est\u00e1n probando el pulso y poder de la red.<\/P> M\u00e1s adelante, Santiago y als ciudades costeras de Vi\u00f1a del Mar y Valpara\u00edso ser\u00e1n las pioneras en la tecnolog\u00eda 4G de Claro, seguidas poco despu\u00e9s por Concepci\u00f3n en el sur, manifiesta Mu\u00f1oz.<\/P> \u201cQueremos que nuestros clientes se beneficien tan r\u00e1pidamente como sea posible y que el pa\u00eds entre en esta nueva era de las telecomunicaciones”, afirma.<\/P> Cobertura Limitada<\/STRONG><\/P> Desafortunadamente para los primeros en adoptarla, en un principio la tecnolog\u00eda 4G estar\u00e1 disponible en Chile solo en el espectro del ancho de banda de 2.600 MHz, que tambi\u00e9n es utilizado por la tecnolog\u00eda 3G.<\/P> Incluso en esta banda, los tel\u00e9fonos 4G pueden navegar en Internet y descargar datos m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido siempre y cuando los tel\u00e9fonos est\u00e9n en un \u00e1rea con cobertura y no se estanquen por una multitud de usuarios. Pero en lugares cerrados -dentro de una casa o una oficina- las velocidades estar\u00e1n por debajo de su potencial. Ello porque las ondas relativamente peque\u00f1as de 2.600 MHz no pueden atravesar edificios tan bien como ondas m\u00e1s largas en la banda de 700 MHz.<\/P> Luego est\u00e1 la demanda. Los proveedores de servicio ya tienen dificultades para manejar la cantidad de usuarios en una parte relativamente peque\u00f1a del ancho de banda. La recepci\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n depende de peque\u00f1as antenas que apuntan a zonas de alto uso, lo que significa que las \u00e1reas rurales a veces tienen una cobertura irregular.<\/P> \u201cPara que Chile realmente experimente la tecnolog\u00eda 4G, necesitamos un ancho de banda que la complemente, permiti\u00e9ndonos descargar archivos a altas velocidades mientras nos desplazamos\u201d, indica Manuel Araya, gerente de regulaci\u00f3n y asuntos corporativos de Entel.<\/P> No obstante, Mu\u00f1oz afirma que las compa\u00f1\u00edas m\u00f3viles sab\u00edan en qu\u00e9 se estaban metiendo cuando entraron en la competencia para proveer 4G. “Con el espectro que el Gobierno nos dio deber\u00edamos poder desarrollar nuestro proyecto e, incluso m\u00e1s, proporcionar un servicio de alta calidad\u201d, sostiene.<\/P> A\u00fan as\u00ed, m\u00e1s del espectro estar\u00e1 disponible para la tecnolog\u00eda 4G. En agosto, el ministerio pretende lanzar una licitaci\u00f3n para frecuencias en la banda de 700 MHz. Los adjudicatarios se elegir\u00e1n a comienzos del 2014 y luego tendr\u00e1n un plazo de un a\u00f1o para poner todo en marcha.<\/P> Una vez que la tecnolog\u00eda 4G pase a esta banda, las compa\u00f1\u00edas tendr\u00e1n m\u00e1s ancho de banda para manejar m\u00e1s usuarios. \u00c1reas urbanas densas no significar\u00e1n redes congestionadas. Y, usando menos antenas que antes, la se\u00f1al llegar\u00e1 a las \u00e1reas m\u00e1s remotas en Chile para entregar una conexi\u00f3n s\u00f3lida con una mayor velocidad.<\/P> \u201cEl ancho de banda de 700 MHz tiene una disponibilidad mucho mejor para propagar la se\u00f1al, de modo que cubrir\u00e1 partes de edificios en donde la se\u00f1al 3G estaba escondida\u201d, indica Atton.<\/P> Adem\u00e1s de una mayor penetraci\u00f3n, tambi\u00e9n ofrece cierta continuidad intercontinental. Chile emplear\u00e1 el mismo ancho de banda que la Telecomunidad Asia-Pac\u00edfico (APT, por su sigla en ingl\u00e9s), la que incluye a pa\u00edses del Medio Oriente y a lo largo de Asia. Los viajeros entre estos pa\u00edses no perder\u00e1n su conexi\u00f3n 4G, pero quienes se aventuren a Europa o Estados Unidos -al menos por ahora- ver\u00e1n reducidas las capacidades de sus tel\u00e9fonos inteligentes 4G.<\/P> Para quienes est\u00e1n ansiosos por acceder a la tecnolog\u00eda 4G lo antes posible, comprar un tel\u00e9fono apto para 4G ahora probablemente signifique que paguen otro cuando el nuevo ancho de banda entre en funciones. En el caso de los usuarios de tecnolog\u00eda 3G, sus tel\u00e9fonos de todos modos no podr\u00e1n conectarse a 4G, pero la 3G seguir\u00e1 operativa durante a\u00f1os.<\/P> \u201cVamos a tener tres redes funcionando (4G, 3G y 2G). Esto es un gran desaf\u00edo tecnol\u00f3gico\u201d, comenta Mu\u00f1oz de Claro.<\/P> Todos los Circuitos Est\u00e1n Ocupados Ahora<\/STRONG><\/P> El cambio al ancho de banda de 700 MHz apunta a descongestionar las redes, las que han experimentado un aumento del 105% en el tr\u00e1fico de Internet desde el 2009, de acuerdo con cifras del Ministerio de Transportes y Telecomunicaciones.<\/P> \u201cDada la explosi\u00f3n de usuarios que hemos tenido en ciertas \u00e1reas, repentinamente estamos bajo presi\u00f3n para incrementar la calidad, la infraestructura y la capacidad de las redes actuales\u201d, sostiene Atton.<\/P> En este momento, la cantidad de tel\u00e9fonos celulares en Chile supera la cantidad de personas: hay 16,5 millones de personas y 24 millones de tel\u00e9fonos celulares. De esos, 3,4 millones son tel\u00e9fonos inteligentes, seg\u00fan el ministerio. Y los operadores de telecomunicaciones esperan que esta cifra siga aumentando: la cantidad de usuarios de Internet m\u00f3vil se dispone a triplicarse para el 2014 y a ser 15 veces m\u00e1s grande para el 2017.<\/P> Junto con la absorci\u00f3n de tel\u00e9fonos inteligentes y computadores tipo tableta, el video streaming y las descargas con estos dispositivos contin\u00faan impulsando el crecimiento.<\/P> \u201cComo compa\u00f1\u00eda tenemos un tremendo desaf\u00edo. A nivel mundial estamos viendo un incremento exponencial en el tr\u00e1fico de datos, el que ha sido denominado el tsunami digital, y Chile no es ajeno a este fen\u00f3meno\u201d, afirm\u00f3 Araya de Entel.<\/P> El ejecutivo indic\u00f3 que la empresa asigna cerca de US$400 millones a redes m\u00f3viles cada a\u00f1o y que esa cifra contin\u00faa creciendo.<\/P> Impacto Regional<\/STRONG><\/P> El crecimiento no se limita a Santiago, donde vive cerca del 40% de los chilenos. \u201cEl problema de este alto consumo ha atravesado Chile. No es solo un problema para Santiago\u201d, asevera Atton.<\/P> Hohmann indica que expandir la cobertura 4G a casi el 100% del pa\u00eds podr\u00eda impulsar a las compa\u00f1\u00edas a trasladarse a otras partes de Chile, o al menos a hacer m\u00e1s sencillo el hacer negocios desde \u00e1reas rurales.<\/P> \u201cCreo que vamos a ver m\u00e1s descentralizaci\u00f3n en Chile, ciertamente con las compa\u00f1\u00edas y la inversi\u00f3n\u201d, dice Hohmann. \u201cSi uno se traslada a ciudades peque\u00f1as en el norte o sur con 4G, televisi\u00f3n digital y cable satelital, tiene en su casa todo lo que tiene en Santiago\u201d.<\/P> Hohmann, quien proviene de Osorno, una peque\u00f1a ciudad en la Regi\u00f3n de los Lagos de Chile, afirma que antes pocos emprendedores se habr\u00edan aventurado a iniciar sus negocios en sus ciudades natales, pero que con la tecnolog\u00eda 4G m\u00e1s de ellos podr\u00edan decidir quedarse.<\/P> A juicio de Hohmann, esta tambi\u00e9n podr\u00eda tener un impacto en la agricultura. Seg\u00fan dice no le sorprender\u00eda ver agricultores cargando un iPad, negociando desde los campos utilizando 4G. \u201cTrabajando en el campo, tu productividad ser\u00eda mucho mayor\u201d, sostiene.<\/P> Si bien el salto de la tecnolog\u00eda 4G puede ser sutil -acelerando el ritmo de las descargas de datos- su efecto en las posibilidades de Internet m\u00f3vil podr\u00eda ser transformador, cambiando la manera en que los consumidores interact\u00faan con los dispositivos en dondequiera que puedan estar.<\/P> \u201cEstamos en medio de la primera revoluci\u00f3n de datos, pero no podemos decir cu\u00e1n lejos o a d\u00f3nde podr\u00eda llegar\u201d, sentencia Mu\u00f1oz.<\/P> Katie Manning se desempe\u00f1a como periodista freelance en Santiago<\/STRONG><\/P><\/p>\n When it comes to Internet on the go, the name of the game is speed. That is why Chile\u2019s telecom companies are preparing to roll out the fourth generation of mobile communications, known as 4G, which promises an Internet connection ten times speedier than its predecessor – the 3G, or third-generation, network.<\/p>\n “It’s going to be really, really good as much for people as for businesses,\u201d said Gerardo Mu\u00f1oz, CEO of Claro Chile, one of the country\u2019s largest mobile providers owned by Mexican company Am\u00e9rica M\u00f3vil. \u201cBasically, this means more speed to navigate the Internet, and more speed for mobile data.\u201d<\/p>\n In 2011, as part of its plan to step up the quality and coverage of Chile\u2019s mobile Internet services, the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications launched a tender for 4G frequencies on the 2,600 MHz band. The winners \u2013 Claro, Entel and Movistar \u2013 were announced in July last year and are required to offer 4G services to 98% of the country by March 2014. Claro has been the first out of the gate. It rolled out a 60-day pilot program in March to test the 4G waters, and Mu\u00f1oz says it will start offering 4G commercially by June this year.<\/p>\n \u201cIt’s going to be a great improvement for efficiency and productivity in the industrial, medical, automotive sectors and beyond,\u201d said Mu\u00f1oz.<\/p>\n The Chilean government hopes the new technology will offer Chileans a better Internet connection, wherever they are, and reduce the cost of mobile and fixed-line Internet, but first the 4G network needs to be upgraded to handle a larger number of users.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are early adopters of a technology that is going to change the industry,\u201d said Claudio Hohmann, a former minister of Transport and Telecommunications. \u201cWe\u2019re going to see a lot of new services that we can\u2019t even imagine now.\u201d<\/p>\n How 4G changes the game<\/strong><\/p>\n So what does 4G offer users? In part, more speed – 4G hustles a smartphone\u2019s Internet connection to rival that of a PC and, unlike 3G, which separates voice and data, it treats everything as data.<\/p>\n \u201cIt opens up a world of applications: telemedicine, smarter cities, telecontrol (remote control), security cameras, traffic and security maps,\u201d says Chile\u2019s Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Jorge Atton.<\/p>\n In Chile, 4G will deliver speeds at least as fast as fixed-line broadband services currently provided by DSL or cable to homes, according to Atton.<\/p>\n The technology uses the Long Term Evolution (LTE) system, which fires data fast enough to smoothly stream YouTube or Skype videos as you walk down the street, without the lag time that can cause awkward lapses in conversation. A finger can chart through an interactive website on a smartphone as fast as the cursor on most computers.<\/p>\n \u201c4G is a lot better than what people have in their houses, so the fixed networks are going to have to step up their game, make better investments and improve the quality,\u201d said Atton. The increased competition, for both mobile service providers and fixed networks, could also make Internet services cheaper, he added.<\/p>\n But the 4G network is still in a trial stage. In Claro\u2019s test run, about 120 phones in select business sectors of Santiago \u2014 Providencia, Las Condes and Huechuraba \u2014 are checking the pulse and power of the network.<\/p>\n Later, Santiago and the nearby coastal cities of Vi\u00f1a del Mar and Valpara\u00edso will pioneer Claro\u2019s 4G, followed shortly after by Concepci\u00f3n to the south, according to Mu\u00f1oz.<\/p>\n \u201cWe want our customers to benefit as quickly as possible and for the country to enter this new telecommunications era,” he said.<\/p>\n Limited coverage<\/strong><\/p>\n Unfortunately for the first adopters, 4G will initially be available in Chile only on spectrum in the 2,600 MHz bandwidth, which is also used by 3G.<\/p>\n Even on this band, 4G phones can surf the Internet and download data faster as long as the phones are in an area with coverage and aren\u2019t bogged down by a herd of users. But in closed spaces \u2014inside a house or an office \u2014 the speeds will fall short of their potential. That\u2019s because the relatively small 2,600 MHz waves can\u2019t sweep through buildings as well as taller waves in the 700 MHz band.<\/p>\n Then there is the demand. Service providers already struggle to handle the number of users on a relatively thin slice of bandwidth. Reception also depends on small antennas pointed at high-use areas, which means that rural areas sometimes have spotty coverage.<\/p>\n \u201cFor Chile to really experience 4G, we need a bandwidth that complements it, allowing us to download files at high speeds while we are on the move,\u201d said Manuel Araya, manager of regulation and corporate issues at Entel.<\/p>\n But Mu\u00f1oz says that mobile companies knew what they were getting into when they entered the competition to provide 4G. “With the spectrum that the government gave us we should be able to develop our project and, even further, provide a high-quality service,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n Even so, more of the spectrum will soon be available for 4G. In August the Ministry plans to launch a tender for frequencies on the 700 MHz band. The winners will be picked in early 2014, and then given a year to put everything in place.<\/p>\n Once 4G moves onto this band, companies will have more bandwidth to handle more users. Dense urban areas won\u2019t mean clogged networks. And, using fewer antennas than before, the signal will reach into most remote areas in Chile to deliver a tight connection with a faster speed.<\/p>\n \u201cThe 700 MHz bandwidth has a much better ability to spread the signal, so it will cover parts of buildings where the 3G signal was hidden,\u201d said Atton.<\/p>\n Aside from greater penetration, it also offers some intercontinental continuity. Chile will use the same bandwidth as the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT), which includes countries in the Middle East and across Asia. Travelers between these countries won\u2019t lose their 4G connection, but those venturing to Europe or the U.S. \u2014 at least for now \u2014 will find the capabilities of their 4G smartphone whittled down.<\/p>\n For those eager to access 4G as soon as possible, buying a 4G-ready phone now likely means shelling out for another when the new bandwidth takes over. For 3G users, their phones won\u2019t be able to connect to 4G anyway, but 3G will remain up and running for years.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re going to have three networks (4G, 3G, and 2G) working. This is a great technological challenge,\u201d said Claro\u2019s Mu\u00f1oz.<\/p>\n All circuits are busy now<\/strong><\/p>\n The switch to the 700 MHz bandwidth aims to unclog networks, which have seen a 105% hike in Internet traffic since 2009, according to figures from the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications.<\/p>\n \u201cGiven the explosion of users we\u2019ve had in certain areas, suddenly we\u2019re under pressure to increase the quality, the infrastructure, and the capacity of the current networks,\u201d said Atton.<\/p>\n Right now, the number of cellphones in Chile trumps the number of people; there are 16.5 million people and 24 million cellphones. Of those, 3.4 million are smartphones, according to the Ministry. And telecom operators expect this to keep rising – the number of mobile Internet users is set to triple by 2014 and grow to be 15 times larger by 2017.<\/p>\n Along with the uptake of smartphones and tablets, video streaming and downloads with these devices continues to drive growth.<\/p>\n \u201cAs a company we have a tremendous challenge. Worldwide we are seeing an exponential increase in data traffic, which has been called the digital tsunami, and Chile is no stranger to this phenomenon,\u201d said Entel\u2019s Araya.<\/p>\n He said that the company puts about US$400 million into mobile networks every year and that figure continues to grow.<\/p>\n Regional impact<\/strong><\/p>\n Growth is not limited to Santiago, where about 40% of Chileans live. \u201cThe issue of this high consumption has swept through Chile. It\u2019s not just a problem for Santiago,\u201d said Atton.<\/p>\n Hohmann says that expanding 4G coverage to nearly 100% of the country could spur companies to move to other parts of Chile, or at least make it easier to do business from rural areas.<\/p>\n \u201cI think we\u2019re going to be seeing more decentralization in Chile, certainly with companies and investment,\u201d said Hohmann. \u201cIf you move to small cities in the north or in the south with 4G, digital television and satellite cable, you have everything at your house that you have in Santiago.\u201d<\/p>\n Hohmann, who hails from Osorno, a small city in Chile\u2019s Lakes Region, says few entrepreneurs would have ventured to bootstrap their business in his hometown before, but with 4G more could decide to stay.<\/p>\n It could have an impact on agriculture as well, according to Hohmann. He says he wouldn\u2019t be surprised to see farmers toting an iPad, negotiating from the fields using 4G. \u201cWorking on the farm, your productivity would be much higher,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n While 4G\u2019s leap may be subtle \u2014 quickening the pace of data downloads \u2014 its impact on mobile Internet possibilities could be transformative, changing the way consumers interact with devices wherever they may be.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re in the middle of the first data revolution, but we can\u2019t say how far or where it might go,\u201d said Mu\u00f1oz.<\/p>\n Katie Manning is a freelance journalist based in Santiago<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Cuando se trata de Internet m\u00f3vil, lo esencial es la velocidad.
