Recientemente asist\u00ed a una cena ofrecida por una importante asociaci\u00f3n industrial chilena. Hab\u00eda cerca de 700 invitados de modo que fui poco m\u00e1s que una mosca en la muralla… la organizaci\u00f3n estuvo espectacular, si bien un poco impersonal, y los videos exhibidos en enormes pantallas fueron muy impresionantes. Hubo dos discursos antes de cenar; el segundo de ellos fue muy largo y estuvo lleno de detalles. La cena empez\u00f3 tarde…<\/p>\n
Fue durante el segundo discurso, pronunciado por una persona extremadamente importante, cuando me di cuenta de que cinco de las ocho personas en mi mesa estaban “enviando mensajes de texto” y no “escuchando”. De hecho, la persona a mi derecha estaba continuamente en Facebook, mientras que a mi izquierda WhatsApp estaba desplegado en pleno.<\/p>\n
Mir\u00e9 alrededor de la sala, tan lejos como mis ojos y cuello me permitieron, y me horroriz\u00f3 la cantidad de personas cabizbajas. Sin duda, muchos invitados \u201cimportante\u201d estaban tweeteando, en su af\u00e1n por ser el primero en comentar el discurso que se estaba pronunciando.<\/p>\n
Encontr\u00e9 que esto era muy perturbante. \u00bfRealmente llegamos al punto en el desarrollo tecnol\u00f3gico y social en que \u201cestar conectado\u201d es m\u00e1s importante que participar en el evento al que se asiste?<\/p>\n
Tengo que admitir ser un \u201cusuario\u201d, pero creo que he encontrado el equilibrio correcto. Las personas son m\u00e1s importantes que las cosas; por ejemplo, si usted est\u00e1 usando un dispositivo mientras se re\u00fane o cena conmigo, usted est\u00e1 diciendo que el dispositivo o la informaci\u00f3n que usted est\u00e1 compartiendo es m\u00e1s importante que yo. Bueno, puede que esto sea verdad, pero \u00a1tambi\u00e9n es ofensivo!<\/p>\n
En otra ocasi\u00f3n, los Eneldo est\u00e1bamos en una cena familiar cuando me di cuenta de que hab\u00eda tres cabizbajos\u2026. as\u00ed que les mand\u00e9 a los tres un mensaje de texto diciendo \u201cahora no; la familia primero\u201d. \u00a1Funcion\u00f3! Nosotros (la mayor\u00eda de la gente) estamos tan acostumbrados a estar \u201cconectados\u201d que nos sentimos inc\u00f3modos e incluso aislados cuando nuestro tel\u00e9fono inteligente se queda en silencio por m\u00e1s de cinco minutos. Tengo un colega con un gran \u201ctic\u201d: necesita abrir su iPhone cada 30 segundos por si a caso\u2026 Le digo: \u201cd\u00e9jalo tranquilo\u201d, pero ni siquiera est\u00e1 consciente del hecho de que tiene este h\u00e1bito.<\/p>\n
Entonces, \u00bfa d\u00f3nde nos dirigimos? No importa cu\u00e1n lejos hayamos llegado con la tecnolog\u00eda m\u00f3vil, a\u00fan estamos en la punta del iceberg, lo que es \u00a1bastante atemorizante! Creo que estos dispositivos est\u00e1n dise\u00f1ados para servirnos y no que nosotros estamos para ser serviles con ellos. Quiz\u00e1s cuando mi tel\u00e9fono inteligente sea lo suficientemente inteligente para rascarme la espalda, abrochar los cordones de mis zapatos y lavarme los dientes ser\u00e9 m\u00e1s comprensivo.<\/p>\n
Las buenas costumbres sociales b\u00e1sicas deber\u00edan regir qu\u00e9 es un comportamiento correcto y que no, pero hoy en d\u00eda la mayor\u00eda de la gente es en general ego\u00edsta y tiene escasas habilidades sociales. Yo a\u00fan cedo mi asiento en el Metro a personas mayores (cada vez menos de estas\u2026) y a embarazadas, pero ning\u00fan joven se parar\u00eda por m\u00ed. Todav\u00eda abro la puerta a las mujeres, \u00bfme convierte eso en un sexista? Seg\u00fan la visi\u00f3n de algunas personas, \u00a1S\u00cd! Doy las \u201cgracias\u201d, pero estoy trabajando arduamente para eliminar el requisito de mi propio ego de que me agradezcan. No necesito las gracias (al menos eso es lo que me digo) porque s\u00e9 que la gente es agradecida y que he hecho lo correcto. Pero tambi\u00e9n porque s\u00e9 que de cualquier modo en Santiago nadie te va a dar las gracias, entonces \u00a1\u00a1para qu\u00e9 calentarse y molestarse ante la falta de un simple gesto de gratitud!!<\/p>\n
Lo que nos lleva de regreso a los tel\u00e9fonos inteligentes y mensajes cr\u00edpticos como \u201cNv m\u00f1n? Ymam a las 5pm\u201d [\u00bfNos vemos ma\u00f1ana? Ll\u00e1mame a las 5pm]<\/em>. Puedo jugar el juego, pero elegir\u00e9 cu\u00e1ndo y d\u00f3nde, pq fui educado correctamente\u2026<\/p>\n Est\u00e9 consciente de que los buenos modales dicen mucho sobre la persona y que, si no me mira directo a los ojos cuando estreche mi mano, entonces sabr\u00e9 que simplemente lo \u201cest\u00e1 haciendo por inercia\u201d, \u00a1qu\u00e9 mal educado! There were about 700 guests \u2013 so I was but a fly upon the wall\u2026 The organization was superb, if a little impersonal, and the videos shown on massive screens were very impressive. There were two speeches before dinner, with the second one very long and packed with detail. Dinner was a late affair\u2026<\/p>\n It was during the second speech, delivered by an extremely important individual, when I noticed that five of the eight people at my table were \u201ctexting\u201d and not \u201clistening\u201d. In fact the individual to my right was continually on Facebook, while to my left WhatsApp was in full play.<\/p>\n I looked around the room, as far as my eyes and neck allowed me, and was appalled by the number of lowered heads. No doubt many an \u201cimportant\u201d guest was Tweeting, so as to be first with comments about the on-going discourse.<\/p>\n I found this very disturbing. Have we really reached the point in technological and social development where \u201cbeing connected\u201d is more important than participating in the event you are attending?<\/p>\n I must admit to being a \u201cuser\u201d but I believe I have found the correct balance. People are more important than things; as in, if you are using a device while meeting or dining with me, then you are saying that the device or information you are sharing is more important than I am. Well, this may be true but it is also offensive!<\/p>\n Another time, the Eneldos were having a family dinner when I noticed three lowered heads\u2026. and so I sent all three a text saying \u201cnot now \u2013 family first\u201d. It worked! We (most people) are so used to being \u201cconnected\u201d that we feel uncomfortable and even isolated when our smartphone goes silent for more than five minutes. I have a colleague with a major \u201ctic\u201d \u2013 he needs to open his iPhone every 30 seconds just in case\u2026 I say: \u201cleave it alone\u201d, but he is unaware of the fact that he even has this habit.<\/p>\n So, where are we headed? However far we have come with mobile technology, we are still on the tip of the iceberg \u2013 which is quite frightening! I believe these devices are designed to serve us and not for us to be subservient to them. Perhaps when my smartphone is smart enough to scratch my back, tie my shoelaces and brush my teeth I will be more sympathetic.<\/p>\n Basic social etiquette should govern what is correct behavior and what is incorrect, but these days most people are generally selfish with poor social skills. I still give up my seat in the Metro for older people (fewer and fewer of these\u2026) and pregnant women but no young person would ever stand up for me. I still hold doors open for women \u2013 does that make me a sexist? In some people\u2019s view \u2013 YES! I say \u201cthank you\u201d but I am working hard to eliminate my own ego\u2019s requirement to be thanked. I don\u2019t need thanks (at least that is what I tell myself) because I know people are grateful and that I have done the right thing. But also because in Santiago no one is going to thank you anyway, so why get all hot and bothered about the lack of a simple gesture of gratitude!!<\/p>\n Which brings us back to smartphones and cryptic texts like \u201cR u up 4 2moro? C u 5pm\u201d.
