Jorge Err\u00e1zuriz, Endeavor; Rodrigo Ballivi\u00e1n, AmCham; Gary Gibbons, Thunderbird University; Jessica Tartell, Thunderbird University, y Gonzalo Iglesias, Coca Cola Chile<\/strong><\/p>\n Por segundo a\u00f1o consecutivo, AmCham -en alianza con el Departamento de Comercio de Estados Unidos y la Thunderbird School of Global Management de Arizona- trajo a Chile una misi\u00f3n de empresas de capital de riesgo e inversi\u00f3n privada de Estados Unidos.<\/p>\n La misi\u00f3n se llev\u00f3 a cabo los d\u00edas 13 y 14 de agosto en Santiago, y los delegados pasaron el resto de la semana en Per\u00fa y Colombia. El prop\u00f3sito de la visita era que los representantes de estas empresas se familiarizaran con el ecosistema empresarial chileno e identificar a potenciales nuevos inversionistas.<\/p>\n Este a\u00f1o, AmCham cont\u00f3 con el respaldo de la Asociaci\u00f3n Chilena de Administradoras de Fondos de Inversi\u00f3n (ACAFI) y Endeavor Chile, parte de la red mundial Endeavor que se concentra en promover el emprendimiento como un elemento clave del desarrollo econ\u00f3mico.<\/p>\n El evento de dos d\u00edas incluy\u00f3 una mesa redonda con inversionistas institucionales locales, incluidas las administradoras de fondos de pensiones y compa\u00f1\u00edas de seguros. Los inversionistas institucionales, junto con los privados, han proporcionado las bases para el crecimiento y el desarrollo de la industria de capital de riesgo e inversi\u00f3n privada en Estados Unidos. Tales inversiones han demostrado ser una alternativa atractiva cuando se incluyen en una cartera diversificada. CORFO, la agencia estatal de desarrollo de Chile, ha estado activa en fondos de cofinanciamiento de capital de riesgo. Adem\u00e1s, algunos inversionistas institucionales de Chile han hecho inversiones iniciales en firmas de inversi\u00f3n privada tanto locales como estadounidenses. Ellos han buscado exitosos historiales, experimentados administradores y estrategias claras en sus inversiones iniciales. A\u00fan est\u00e1n en sus primeras etapas, de modo que las inversiones siguen involucrando cantidades limitadas. Empresas familiares en Chile tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1n interesadas en esta clase de activos, pero -en general-, a\u00fan se encuentran en las etapas muy iniciales de comprensi\u00f3n y desarrollo de una estrategia para tales inversiones.<\/p>\n La discusi\u00f3n de la mesa redonda fue seguida por un seminario en el Hotel Ritz-Carlton, al que asistieron cerca de 100 personas. Esta fue una oportunidad para que los ejecutivos de algunas de las firmas de visita intercambiaran ideas con Jorge Err\u00e1zuriz, director de Endeavor y cofundador de la corredora chilena Celfin. El d\u00eda concluy\u00f3 con una cena de gala cuyo anfitri\u00f3n fue Christoph Schiess, director de Endeavor Chile y presidente de Empresas Transoce\u00e1nica. The purpose of the visit was for the representatives of these companies to familiarize themselves with the Chilean entrepreneurial ecosystem and identify potential new investors.<\/p>\n This year, AmCham was supported by the Chilean Association of Investment Fund Managers (ACAFI) and Endeavor Chile, part of the global Endeavor network which is focused on promoting entrepreneurship as a key element in economic development.<\/p>\n The two-day event included a roundtable with local institutional investors, including pension funds and insurance companies. Institutional investors, along with private individuals, have provided the basis for the growth and development of the private equity and venture capital industry in the United States. Such investments have proven to be an attractive alternative when included in a properly diversified portfolio. Moreover, private equity funds have been an important source of financing for early stage companies in the United States and an important source of growth and jobs.<\/p>\n Chilean institutions and individuals have recently begun to evaluate and cautiously invest in these markets. CORFO, the Chilean government\u2019s development agency, has been active in co-financing venture capital funds. In addition, some Chilean institutional investors have made initial investments in both local and US private equity firms. They have sought out successful track records, experienced managers and clear strategies in their initial investments. It is early days yet, so investments continue to involve limited amounts. Family offices in Chile are also interested in this asset class but are, in general, still in the very early stages of understanding and developing a strategy for such investments.<\/p>\n The roundtable discussion was followed by a seminar at the Ritz Hotel in Santiago, which was attended by nearly 100 people. This was a chance for the local private equity, venture capital and entrepreneurial community to understand the latest trends and to discuss what needs to be done in Chile to create a more dynamic market. AmCham director and Coca-Cola Chile CEO, Gonzalo Iglesias, and CORFO\u2019s executive vice president, Hern\u00e1n Cheyre, introduced this event.<\/p>\n Gary Gibbons, the academic director of the Thunderbird Global Private Equity Center, gave the keynote address. He provided some exciting fresh data from a recent study on the overall performance of this asset class in the United States. He said that returns from private equity and venture capital over the 11-year period considered by the study consistently beat the overall returns from a balanced Standard and Poor\u2019s portfolio. The next phase of his research will delve more deeply into defining the optimal mix of private equity and venture funds.<\/p>\n Following the keynote address, a panel discussion took place moderated by Sergio Guti\u00e9rrez, director of ACAFI and partner and co-founder of EPG Partners. Here some of the visiting firms, including Jafco Ventures, Welsh Carson, and Landmark Partners, had the chance to exchange ideas with Jorge Err\u00e1zuriz, an Endeavor director and co-founder of Celfin, a Chilean investment bank.<\/p>\n Representatives from these firms, including some focused on specific industries such as healthcare and technology, discussed their individual strategies. They highlighted the importance of experienced managers given the high levels of risk involved in this type of business. As with any asset class, they also stressed the importance of diversification with investments in several firms, echoing the comments made by Gary Gibbons.<\/p>\n For his part, Jorge Err\u00e1zuriz emphasized the need for Chilean investors to take more risk. In Chile there are high levels of savings in the domestic market and a real need for financing entrepreneurial ventures. Moreover, studies have shown that this asset class, when properly managed and diversified, can yield attractive returns. It is an important source of growth and employment for the economy as well. Therefore, there is the need and the incentive to deepen and broaden investments in this area. He stressed the importance of financing ventures with the ability to scale \u2013 potentially throughout Latin America. He also identified the need to review and refine domestic regulations to facilitate investment in private equity and venture capital.<\/p>\n Following the seminar, the visiting firms had the chance to meet one-on-one with local investors to get to know each other and explore possible opportunities to work together.<\/p>\n The day ended with a gala dinner hosted by Christoph Schiess, director of Endeavor Chile and president of Empresas Transoce\u00e1nica. At the dinner, local funds and investors, entrepreneurs and the international delegation had the opportunity to network.<\/p>\n Overall, this event was well attended and the atmosphere demonstrated that there is increasing interest in venture capital and private equity \u2013 from both the Chilean and US side.<\/p>\n The personal dialogue generated by these missions serves to accelerate learning on both sides and to promote investment potential.
