But there is still a long way to go.

“Chile has built its reputation on good but inexpensive wine and we have to change this perception,” says Aurelio Montes, president of Montes Wines, a family-owned winery which exports premium wines such as Montes Alpha.

“It’s like the car industry,” says Montes. “If you have been selling a cheap car like the Lada, it is difficult to achieve the price point of a Mercedes Benz in a reasonable period of time.”

Competition and prices

Making a profit in the wine business is not easy – it requires large volumes, efficient production processes and access to markets.

Chile’s wine industry is dominated by a handful of large producers led by Concha y Toro, Santa Rita and Viña San Pedro, a subsidiary of Chilean beverage producer CCU. There are over 300 wine exporters in Chile but the top ten accounted for 52% of Chile’s total wine exports in 2011.

Economies of scale are important in the wine industry with Chile facing stronger competition, especially from Argentina which has been very successful in the United States, says Montes.

Since Chile exports roughly two thirds of its total wine production, wineries are exposed to exchange rate risk. With most of their income in dollars and their costs in pesos, the weak dollar has squeezed margins.

In order for wineries to secure solid export returns, exporters say the dollar should be equivalent to at least 550 pesos but it is currently near 480 pesos. And it doesn’t help that costs for labor and energy have also risen sharply in Chile.

As a result, Chilean wineries have been forced to raise prices at a time when consumers in some markets are cutting back on spending due to economic uncertainty. Inevitably, this has affected sales volumes.

In the first six months of this year, Chile’s total exports of bottled wine rose 1% to 205 million liters compared to the same period a year ago, according Wines of Chile. In the U.K., the average price for a bottle of Chilean wine has edged close to 5 pounds (about US$8), which is only a few pence more than last year, but in a highly price sensitive market sales have been affected, says Cox.

Even so, Chilean wine is still seen as good value and higher prices are “a good thing in the long run”, he says. “It sounds strange to say that but Chilean wines have been repositioning in the last few years to reflect better quality and the desire for better profitability.”

While Italy and Spain are gaining market share at lower prices, Chile is moving into the bracket of “super premium” wines (US$10-15 a bottle). In addition to its sponsorship deal with the Premier League football club Manchester United, it has worked hard to get its wines into airplanes and restaurants to raise their profile, says Larraín.

As for smaller wineries, marketing is costly and not many can afford to sponsor a football club. Sales of Chilean wine are surging in China and Japan where sales of bottled wine rose 33% by volume in the first half of this year compared to the same period last year.

In fact, Chile was third in China in terms of wine imports last year after France and Spain, accounting for 17.3% of total imports, according to Chinese customs statistics.

Chile’s Asia-Pacific Chamber of Commerce estimates that wine consumption in China could triple from just less than 1 liter per capita to 3 liters by 2017. Some Chilean wineries like Concha y Toro, which has its regional headquarters in Singapore, have also set up their own distribution networks.

“The Asian culture is becoming more like the West which is reflected in the consumption of wine,” says Alfonso Larraín. “But we are just beginning in Asia, consumption is still relatively low.”

Chilean wineries are well positioned to help quench the thirst of China’s growing middle class, but they must study the market, says Alvaro Echeverría, director of the Asia-Pacific Chamber of Commerce.

“There is a huge opportunity in China for the wine industry, but Chilean wineries must do their homework first,” he says.

Chinese consumers don’t know much about wine, but this is changing as young people who have studied abroad return home with a taste for wine. And they are willing to pay high prices for imported brands including Chilean ones, says Echeverría.

Cultural differences are a barrier but Chileans don’t have to speak Mandarin to sell wine in China. In fact, Hong Kong has emerged as the wine distribution center for Asia and a “link between East and West”, which makes it an ideal base for Chilean companies, says Echeverría.

But there are obstacles. China is known for producing falsified merchandise and wine is no exception. Some small Chilean wineries have found that their brands are already registered in China and their reputation harmed without their knowledge. To avoid this situation, Echeverría recommends that wineries hire a local consultant to register their brands before going to China.

Another challenge is competition. Chile has a good reputation in China due to its natural virtues, but it’s not the only South American producer vying for a greater share of the fortune cookie. Argentina is racing to sell more wine and Chile could be left behind if it does not step up its marketing campaign.

But the Asian market is big enough for both countries. In fact, Echeverría suggests Chile and Argentina could work together to promote the image of South American wines, which would benefit both countries in the long term.

World class wines

Chile doesn’t yet have the wine mystique of France, but sales of ultra-premium wines such as Don Melchor, Almaviva and Viñedo Chadwick are helping to improve Chile’s wine image.

The Lapostolle winery, founded by the French group Grand Marnier in 1994, produces low volumes – about 200,000 cases a year – with a focus on quality. Its flagship brand Clos Apalta retails for about US$200 a bottle and nearly all of its production is exported to the United States, Asia, Europe and Latin America.

“The market in Chile has not evolved enough, people are not willing to spend this much on a bottle of wine except for very special occasions,” says Lapostolle CEO Gonzalo Belemmi.

Unlike in Chile, customers in the United States are willing to regularly spend over US$30 for a bottle of wine and, at this price range, sales have been relatively unaffected by the world economic crisis, points out Belemmi.

Although the US market can be challenging for Chilean exporters which must work with an importer and a local distributor, it is a very attractive market for ultra-premium wines, he says.

As part of its luxury image, Lapostolle has developed a five-star boutique hotel near its winery in the Colchagua valley. It has four rooms that go for about US$1,000 a night and they are booked solid through the summer months, mainly by well-heeled Brazilians and Americans who think nothing of flying down to Chile for the weekend.

Wine tourism is helping to strengthen Chile’s image. Concha y Toro’s Pirque winery near Santiago attracts more than 200,000 visitors every year and foreign visitors value Chile for its stunning scenery. But more could be done to promote Chile as a wine tourism destination, says Belemmi.

Finally, the key for Chile in Asia and other markets is not to price its wines too high or too low. Not cheap plonk, but not Château Lafite either, what Chile does best is mid-price, good quality wines that don’t cost a fortune. But changing Chile’s image will take time.

As Aurelio Montes says, wine is really about families, passion and putting a face behind the label. As Chile’s wineries focus on their brand image, wine drinkers from Beijing to San Francisco will finally learn to associate Chilean wine with high quality at a fair price.

Julian Dowling is Editor of bUSiness CHILE

Chile es un paraíso de elaboración de vinos.
