<\/p>\n
Escribo esto el d\u00eda despu\u00e9s de que se jugara el Torneo Abierto de Golf 2012 en el Royal Lytham & St. Annes en Inglaterra. Este fue ganado por el golfista sudafricano Ernie Els tras un tr\u00e1gico colapso en los \u00faltimos cuatro hoyos del encantador, pero nervioso australiano Adam Scott. No lo presenci\u00e9 dado que estaba jugando mi propio campeonato.<\/p>\n
Mi relaci\u00f3n con el golf es m\u00e1s bien una historia humillante y mis \u201csentimientos\u201d por Scott son muy profundos. Me encanta el juego, pero tambi\u00e9n lo odio, \u00a1con toda la odiosidad que pude juntar! \u00bfPor qu\u00e9?<\/p>\n
Cuando joven era un golfista bastante bueno, con buena t\u00e9cnica y bastante agresivo. Salvo por un \u201cproblema de actitud\u201d, en general estaba conforme con mi juego.<\/p>\n
Con el paso del tiempo, ten\u00eda cada vez menos tiempo para jugar (y \u00a1m\u00e1s y m\u00e1s trabajo!), pero en las ocasiones en que logr\u00e9 llegar a la cancha mi juego se fue deteriorando de manera constante y me convert\u00ed en una verg\u00fcenza. En mis propias palabras, por cierto, todav\u00eda era un jugador muy competente, pero por alguna inexplicable raz\u00f3n este talento no se desplegaba en la calle. Mi score por 18 hoyos fue decayendo hasta que llegu\u00e9 a los 100 tiros y luego ca\u00ed a 110 e incluso a 120. Mi problema de actitud creci\u00f3 hasta que un d\u00eda me preguntaron si estaba conforme con haber podido lanzar mi palo m\u00e1s lejos de lo que hab\u00eda llegado la pelota de golf\u2026 estaba en peligro incluso de perder amigos. Expliqu\u00e9 que lamentaba estar jugando tan mal, solo para que un \u201camigo\u201d me recordara que siempre <\/em>hab\u00eda jugado mal (\u00a1!) pero que los gritos, los garabatos y el lanzamiento de los palos al espacio les daba verg\u00fcenza a todos. Concord\u00e9 en que estaba echando a perder su placer y entonces me retir\u00e9 del golf por casi 15 a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n Ahora regres\u00e9: un golfista retrasado, pero (en su mayor parte) m\u00e1s feliz. Me hab\u00eda convencido de que estaba comenzando un nuevo deporte y que cualquier recuerdo que hubiera guardado del golf era simplemente una falla en mis disco duro humano. Nunca m\u00e1s asociar\u00eda mis palos de golf con ADM. S\u00ed, Armas de Destrucci\u00f3n Masiva\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n Compr\u00e9 nuevos palos, pelotas, zapatos de golf, un guante e incluso tom\u00e9 unas pocas lecciones. Disfrut\u00e9 de mi juego (a\u00fan con 120, pero \u00a1divertido!) y disfrut\u00e9 socializando con otros golfistas en la cancha. La vida era buena. Me pod\u00eda re\u00edr de mis malos tiros y pelotas perdidas.<\/p>\n Luego tuve una reca\u00edda. Estaba en Estados Unidos jugando golf con una hermana, un cu\u00f1ado y un amigo. Los primeros cinco hoyos fueron un gran \u00e9xito y le estaba pegando bien a la pelota. Luego Murphy asom\u00f3 su fea cabeza y reprogram\u00f3 mis circuitos. De repente, y muy tontamente, pens\u00e9 que en realidad era un golfista bastante bueno y comenc\u00e9 a esperar un buen score en cada hoyo. Pero eso simplemente no era posible. Peor, perder\u00eda la pelota por completo (no lograr\u00eda pegarle) o sacar\u00eda un pedazo de pasto del porte de un plato mientras mi pelota se mov\u00eda apenas seis pulgadas. Entonces colaps\u00e9. Tras una secuencia particularmente horrible de tiros, grit\u00e9 una palabrota de cuatro letras sin una direcci\u00f3n en particular, pero m\u00e1s bien fuerte. Tambi\u00e9n sent\u00ed que ya no sosten\u00eda mi palo\u2026<\/p>\n Hubo un silencio total a mi alrededor. Mis compa\u00f1eros de juego ten\u00edan la vista inc\u00f3modamente fija en sus zapatos y otros jugadores de greens y tees cercanos estaban congelados a mitad del swing. Comenc\u00e9 a murmurar mi disculpa con \u201c\u00bfAlguien vio a d\u00f3nde qued\u00f3 mi palo?\u201d Sin que hubiera respuesta, prosegu\u00ed: \u201cEst\u00e1 muy h\u00famedo\u2026 se me debe haber resbalado\u201d. Entonces escuch\u00e9 a una anciana estadounidense se\u00f1alar: \u201cLes dije que los extranjeros era una mala influencia para el juego\u201d.<\/p>\n Us\u00e9 los \u00e1rboles para esconderme mientras volv\u00eda al clubhouse y mi auto, donde -para mi horror- estaba el gerente del club. Sonre\u00ed avergonzado esperando una reprimenda. \u201cLo s\u00e9, hijo (\u00a1yo ten\u00eda edad suficiente para ser su padre!), es solo un juego, trata de disfrutarlo. Incluso de los malos tiros vale la pena re\u00edrse\u201d. Quer\u00eda decirle S\u00e9 eso imb\u00e9cil, <\/em>pero en cambio le agradec\u00ed por su sabidur\u00eda, guard\u00e9 mis palos (\u00a1todos menos el que hab\u00eda desaparecido!) en el auto y me fui manejando.<\/p>\n Acept\u00e9 (la Sra. Eneldo insisti\u00f3) en tomar un curso de manejo de la ira y solo despu\u00e9s de esto se me permitir\u00e1 \u201csalir\u201d de nuevo. I did not witness this as I was playing my own championship.<\/p>\n My relationship with the game of golf is a rather humbling story and my \u201cfeelings\u201d for Scott run very deep. I love the game but I also hate it – with all the loathing I can muster! Why?<\/p>\n As a young man I was quite a fine golfer; good technique and quite aggressive. Except for an \u201cattitude problem\u201d, I was generally pleased with my game.<\/p>\n As time moved on, I had less and less time to play (more and more work!) but on the occasions I did make it out to the course my game steadily deteriorated and I became an embarrassment. In my own mind, of course, I was still a very competent player but for some inexplicable reason this talent did not unfold on the fairway. My score for 18 holes headed further \u201csouth\u201d until I arrived at 100 shots and then slipped to 110 and even 120. My attitude problem grew until one day I was asked if I was satisfied being able to throw my club further than the golf ball had travelled\u2026 I was even in danger of losing friends. I explained that I was sorry for playing so badly only for a \u201cfriend\u201d to remind me that I had always<\/em> played badly (!) but that screaming, swearing and launching clubs into orbit caused embarrassment for all. I agreed that I was spoiling their pleasure and so I retired from golf for almost 15 years.<\/p>\n Now I have returned \u2013 a retarded golfer but (for the most part) a happier one. I had to convince myself that I was starting a new sport and that any stored memory of golf was simply a failure in my human hard drive. No longer would I associate my clubs with WMD. Yes, Weapons of Mass Destruction\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n I bought new clubs, balls, golfing shoes, a glove and I even took a few lessons. I enjoyed my game (still 120 but fun!) and I enjoyed socializing with fellow golfers on the course. Life was good. I could laugh at my poor shots and lost balls.<\/p>\n Then I had a relapse. I was in the U.S. playing golf with a sister, a brother-in-law and a friend. The first five holes were a great success and I was hitting the ball well. Then Murphy raised his ugly head and reprogrammed my wiring. I suddenly, and very foolishly, thought I was actually quite a good golfer and began to expect a good score on every hole. But this was just not possible. Worse, I would miss the ball entirely (air shot) or scoop out plate-sized clumps of sod while my ball moved just six inches. Then I cracked. After one particularly dreadful sequence of shots, I screamed out a four-letter word in no direction in particular \u2013 but rather too loudly. I also sensed I was no longer holding my club\u2026<\/p>\n There was total silence around me. My playing partners were staring awkwardly at their shoes and other players on nearby greens and tees were frozen in mid-swing. I started my mumbling apology with: \u201cDid anyone see where my club went?\u201d There being no response, I continued: \u201cIt\u2019s very humid\u2026 must have slipped from my grip\u201d. I then heard an elderly American woman announce: \u201cTold ya foreigners are a bad influence on the game\u201d.<\/p>\n I used the cover of the trees to creep back to the clubhouse and my car where, to my horror, the club\u2019s manager was standing. I smiled shamefully expecting a tongue lashing. \u201cYa know, son (I was old enough to be his father!), it is only a game, try to enjoy it. Even the bad shots are worth laughing about.\u201d I wanted to say I know that you halfwit, <\/em>but instead I thanked him for his wisdom, stuffed my clubs (all but the one that had disappeared!) into the car and drove off.<\/p>\n I have agreed (Mrs. Eneldo insisted) to take an anger management course and only after this will I be allowed \u201cout\u201d again.
