En su forma m\u00e1s simple, la biodiversidad es la variedad de vida \u2013ecosistemas, especies y genes\u2013 que es esencial para el desarrollo humano y el crecimiento. Es la base de la producci\u00f3n, el comercio, la inversi\u00f3n y la innovaci\u00f3n, e incluso la supervivencia de la raza humana.<\/p>\n
Chile se ha beneficiado enormemente de su tremendo patrimonio en materia de biodiversidad. Desde su desierto rico en minerales en el norte hasta la f\u00e9rtil llanura del valle central, los majestuosos fiordos del sur y sus abundantes recursos oce\u00e1nicos, los ecosistemas naturales de Chile han proporcionado las bases de su s\u00f3lida y vibrante econom\u00eda basada en las exportaciones.<\/p>\n
Desde el turismo hasta la astronom\u00eda, la biodiversidad tambi\u00e9n abre nuevas oportunidades de negocios de valor agregado mientras Chile sigue con su transici\u00f3n hacia una econom\u00eda de innovaci\u00f3n. La industria vitivin\u00edcola, que se destaca en el informe especial de este mes, es un ejemplo de un sector basado en las exportaciones que se ha nutrido de la biodiversidad de Chile.<\/p>\n
Sin embargo, esta biodiversidad no deber\u00eda darse por sentada. A medida que Chile crece y prospera, la biodiversidad debe ser protegida y requerir\u00e1 un cuidadoso liderazgo a fin de permitir un mayor desarrollo para el beneficio de las futuras generaciones.<\/p>\n
Chile ha tomado medidas para enfrentar este importante desaf\u00edo. La naci\u00f3n ha desarrollado leyes para proteger su borde costero, desarrollar y fortalecer sus instituciones ambientales, y proteger su bosque nativo. Pero a\u00fan hay mucho trabajo por hacer. El reportaje principal de este mes detalla el debate que rodea la nueva legislaci\u00f3n de pesca, la que est\u00e1 dise\u00f1ada para asegurar el desarrollo sustentable de este importante recurso.<\/p>\n
El sector privado tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1 tomando medidas. A trav\u00e9s de programas de responsabilidad social y ambiental, las empresas est\u00e1n trabajando para proteger la biodiversidad en las comunidades en que operan. Las compa\u00f1\u00edas comprenden que proteger los ecosistemas naturales es fundamental para la sobrevivencia de sus operaciones en el largo plazo.<\/p>\n
Una mayor conciencia sobre este tema ha creado la necesidad de un di\u00e1logo p\u00fablico-privado en Chile, lo que ha conducido a una agenda nacional sobre biodiversidad. Esta agenda es necesaria en un mundo en que los temas ambientales son cada vez m\u00e1s importantes para un posicionamiento competitivo del pa\u00eds.<\/p>\n

In its simplest form, biodiversity is the variety of life \u2013 ecosystems, species and genes \u2013 that is essential for human development and growth. It is the basis for production, trade, investment and innovation, and even the survival of the human race.<\/p>\n
Chile has benefited greatly from its tremendous wealth of biodiversity. From its mineral-rich desert in the north to the fertile plain of the central value, the majestic fjords of the south and its abundant ocean resources, Chile\u2019s natural ecosystems have provided the foundation of its strong and vibrant export-based economy.<\/p>\n
From tourism to astronomy, biodiversity also opens up new value-added business opportunities as Chile continues its transition to an innovation economy. The wine industry, which is highlighted in this month\u2019s special report, is an example of an export-based industry that has thrived on Chile\u2019s biodiversity.<\/p>\n
But this biodiversity should not be taken for granted. As Chile grows and prospers, it must be protected and will require careful stewardship to permit further development for the benefit of future generations.<\/p>\n
Chile has taken steps to face this important challenge. It has developed laws to protect its coastline, to develop and strengthen its environmental institutions, and to protect its native forests. But there is still much work to do. This month\u2019s cover story outlines the debate surrounding new fisheries legislation which is designed to ensure the sustainable development of this important resource.<\/p>\n
The private sector is also acting. Through social responsibility and environmental programs, companies are working to protect biodiversity in the communities where they operate. They understand that protecting natural ecosystems is fundamental to the survival of their businesses in the long term.<\/p>\n
Greater awareness about this subject has created the need for a public-private dialogue in Chile, leading to a national agenda on biodiversity. This agenda is necessary in a world where environmental issues are increasingly important to a country\u2019s competitive positioning.<\/p>\n
AmCham strongly supports Chile\u2019s sustainable development and recognizes the importance of protecting biodiversity to achieve this goal. We look forward to participating in this dialogue and to contributing through our Good Corporate Citizenship awards that recognize socially responsible businesses. We are also developing links with US organizations that have useful expertise in these matters.
