Lo esencial no es la conquista sino haber luchado bien&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Y entonces \u00bfcu\u00e1ntos deportistas viajar\u00e1n a Londres con esto en mente? \u00a1\u00a1No muchos!!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Como dicen en los Estados Unidos de Am\u00e9rica: \u201cSi ganar no fuera importante, entonces \u00bfpara qu\u00e9 molestarse en seguir los resultados?\u201d Y, por supuesto, esto es todo lo que realmente importa: ganar, no ga\u00f1ir.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hubo un tiempo, antes de la Segunda Guerra Mundial (vea la pel\u00edcula <em>Carros de Fuego<\/em>) cuando el Movimiento Ol\u00edmpico realmente se trataba (o as\u00ed nos hicieron creer\u2026) de la competencia justa. Aqu\u00ed estamos, a cuatro a\u00f1os de Beijing 2008 y el magn\u00edfico estadio Nido de P\u00e1jaro. Ser\u00e1 interesante ver lo que Londres, y Gran Breta\u00f1a, pueden aportar al Movimiento Ol\u00edmpico\u2026 el antiguo deporte de los dardos, carreras de tres pies, cricket (que, para los estadounidenses, es detestable porque muy a menudo \u00a1nadie gana!), concursos de qui\u00e9n come m\u00e1s de los tradicionales steak-and-kidney pies, lanzamiento del c\u00e1ber (un deporte escoc\u00e9s, en serio\u2026), esquileo de ovejas y no nos olvidemos del antiguo pasatiempo de muerte de ser \u201cahorcado, arrastrado y descuartizado\u201d, donde se gana o se pierde absolutamente todo\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pero, en serio si es que puedo, en el Movimiento Ol\u00edmpico hoy en d\u00eda todo se trata de las Ceremonias Inaugural y de Clausura, y no realmente del deporte o de los competidores.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cMira, gan\u00e9 la medalla de plata en boxeo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAh, mmm, muy bien, pero \u00bfestuviste durante la fant\u00e1stica Ceremonia Inaugural?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cEstaba entrenando\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201c\u00a1Ah!, no te da verg\u00fcenza\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Por supuesto que hubo momentos en que los Juegos Ol\u00edmpicos tuvieron m\u00e1s que ver con la pol\u00edtica que con el deporte:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>1964 Tokio \u2013 El Comit\u00e9 Ol\u00edmpico Internacional (COI) proh\u00edbe la participaci\u00f3n de Sud\u00e1frica por su pol\u00edtica de apartheid basada en la segregaci\u00f3n racial.<\/li>\n<li>1968 Ciudad de M\u00e9xico \u2013 Saludo del Black Power de los atletas afroamericanos estadounidenses Tommie Smith y John Carlos.<\/li>\n<li>1976 Montreal \u2013 32 pa\u00edses africanos boicotean los juegos por la negativa del COI a prohibir la participaci\u00f3n de Nueva Zelanda (el quipo de rugby All Blacks estaba de gira en la segregada Sud\u00e1frica).<\/li>\n<li>1980 Mosc\u00fa \u2013 Boicot de 65 gobiernos occidentales encabezados por Estados Unidos por la invasi\u00f3n de la Uni\u00f3n Sovi\u00e9tica a Afganist\u00e1n<\/li>\n<li>1984 Los Angeles \u2013 La Uni\u00f3n Sovi\u00e9tica y 13 aliados comunistas se niegan a participar en represalia por el boicot estadounidense.<\/li>\n<li>1988 Se\u00fal \u2013 Corea del Norte se niega a participar debido al fracaso de su intento por ser co-anfitri\u00f3n. Cuba y Etiop\u00eda se mantienen al margen en respaldo a Corea del Norte.<\/li>\n<li>1992 Barcelona \u2013 Santiago Eneldo causa un esc\u00e1ndalo cuando, despu\u00e9s de terminar \u00faltimo en el salto triple, trota una vuelta de honor a la cancha llevando invertida la bandera chilena&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Entonces, \u00bfqu\u00e9 nos espera este a\u00f1o? Bueno, puedo garantizarles algunas cosas:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>El ciclismo tendr\u00e1 su habitual cuota de dopings positivos.<\/li>\n<li>Los 100 metros planos de hombres no se correr\u00e1n en menos de 9 segundos.<\/li>\n<li>Carl Lewis no competir\u00e1, o as\u00ed nos han dicho.<\/li>\n<li>Las nadadoras de nado sincronizado se mantendr\u00e1n bajo el agua por 5 minutos lo que har\u00e1 que los salvavidas intervengan.<\/li>\n<li>El f\u00fatbol como deporte ol\u00edmpico decepcionar\u00e1 a tal punto que se eliminar\u00e1.<\/li>\n<li>El voleibol de gimnasio (\u00a1realmente ABURRIDO!) ser\u00e1 reemplazado por voleibol de campo minado (\u00a1realmente EMOCIONANTE!); el voleibol playa continuar\u00e1 porque los cuerpos de los jugadores son admirables\u2026<\/li>\n<li>El tiro al arco est\u00e1 sobrevaluado e involucra demasiada tecnolog\u00eda; abundar\u00e1n las demandas para un regreso a la era de Robin Hood y William Tell.<\/li>\n<li>La carrera de obst\u00e1culos tambi\u00e9n terminar\u00e1 siendo demasiado deslucida y predecible, lo que har\u00e1 que se pidan cambios:\n<ul>\n<li>Obst\u00e1culos en llamas<\/li>\n<li>\u201cPozos\u201d plagados de cocodrilos<\/li>\n<li>Alambre de p\u00faas en la parte superior de todos los obst\u00e1culos<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Enfrent\u00e9moslo; lo que todos queremos realmente es volver a los juegos de Roma, los Gladiadores con su honor, sangre y sudor (y no solo el sudor envuelto en una bandera nacional). El \u00faltimo competidor que se mantenga en pie, gana\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">El Movimiento Ol\u00edmpico encontrar\u00e1 la forma a trav\u00e9s de la gran cantidad de potenciales desastres en Londres; los juegos ser\u00e1n un \u00e9xito fenomenal, y los r\u00e9cords se romper\u00e1n, pero \u00bfrecordaremos el verdadero esp\u00edritu de los juegos? The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And so how many athletes will travel to London with this in mind? Not many!!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As they say in the US of A: \u201cIf winning wasn\u2019t important, then why bother keeping score?\u201d And, of course, this is all that really matters \u2013 winning, not whining.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There was a time, before World War II (see the movie <em>Chariots of Fire<\/em>) when the Olympic Movement truly was (or so they would have us believe\u2026) about fair competition. This was the era of the Amateur; a time when the love of competing was, genuinely, more important than winning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Well, now it isn\u2019t; gold is everything whereas silver and bronze are, at times, a national embarrassment. Personally, I would be absolutely thrilled to win a bronze medal in the Rubber Band Paperslug Distance Challenge, which just happens to be one of the newly recognized Olympic sports this year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That brings us to London 2012. Here we are, four years on from Beijing 2008 and the magnificent Bird\u2019s Nest stadium. It will be interesting to see what London, and Great Britain, can bring to the Olympic Movement\u2026 the age-old sport of darts, three-legged races, cricket (which, for Americans, is abhorrent because very often no one wins!), steak-and-kidney pie eating contests, tossing the caber (a Scottish sport, to be honest\u2026), sheep shearing, and let\u2019s not forget the old pastime of death by being \u201chung, drawn and quartered\u201d where you either win or lose absolutely everything\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But, seriously if I may, the Olympic Movement today is all about the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and really not about the sport or the competitors at all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cHey there, I won a silver medal for Boxing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOh, mmm, well done, but where were you during the fantastic Opening Ceremony?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI was training\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOh, shame on you\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There have been times, of course, when the Olympic Games were more about politics than sport:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>1964 Tokyo \u2013 The International Olympic Committee (IOC) bans South Africa over its apartheid policy on racial segregation.<\/li>\n<li>1968 Mexico City \u2013 Black Power salute by US African American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos.<\/li>\n<li>1976 Montreal \u2013 32 African countries boycott the games over the IOC&#8217;s refusal to ban New Zealand (All Blacks rugby team touring segregated South Africa).<\/li>\n<li>1980 Moscow \u2013 US-led boycott by 65 Western governments over the Soviet Union\u2019s invasion of Afghanistan.<\/li>\n<li>1984 Los Angeles \u2013 Soviet Union and 13 communist allies refuse to participate in retaliation for US boycott.<\/li>\n<li>1988 Seoul \u2013 North Korea refuses to participate due to the failure of its co-hosting bid. Cuba and Ethiopia also stay away in support of North Korea.<\/li>\n<li>1992 Barcelona \u2013 Santiago Eneldo causes outrage when, after finishing last in the \u201chop, skip and jump\u201d (now known as the triple jump), he jogs a lap of honor wearing the Chilean flag upside down&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So, what are we in for this year? Well, I can guarantee a few things:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Cycling will get its usual share of doping positives.<\/li>\n<li>The men\u2019s 100 meters will not be run in under 9 seconds.<\/li>\n<li>Carl Lewis is not competing \u2013 or so we are informed.<\/li>\n<li>Female synchronized swimmers will remain under water for 5 minutes prompting lifeguards to intervene.<\/li>\n<li>Football (Soccer) as an Olympic sport will disappoint to the point of abolition.<\/li>\n<li>Gymnasium volleyball (really BORING!) will be replaced by Minefield volleyball (really EXCITING); Beach volleyball will stay because the players\u2019 bodies are admirable\u2026<\/li>\n<li>Archery is overrated and involves too much technology; demands for a return to the era of Robin Hood and William Tell will abound.<\/li>\n<li>The Steeplechase will also prove too dull and predictable, bringing calls for changes:\n<ul>\n<li>Flaming hurdles<\/li>\n<li>Crocodile-infested \u201cponds\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Barbwire atop all hurdles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Let\u2019s face it; what we all really want is a return to the games of Rome, the Gladiators with their honor, blood and sweat (and not just sweat wrapped in a national flag). The last competitor still standing wins\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Olympic Movement will find a way through the myriad of potential disasters in London; the games will be a phenomenal success, and records will be broken \u2013 but will we remember the true spirit of the Games?
