Fui a recoger mi nuevo auto ayer -un Very Smart XV \u201ccon todos los accesorios\u201d, incluida una c\u00e1mara que ayuda a retroceder sin atropellar a un perro u olvidar abrir el port\u00f3n, y palanca de cambios detr\u00e1s del volante, tal como un conductor de F\u00f3rmula One. Viene con una pantalla como tablero de instrumentos que entrega tanta informaci\u00f3n que tendr\u00e9 poco tiempo para mantener mis ojos en el camino. Me voy a sentir bien, en realidad bastante bac\u00e1n, mientras viajo por la ciudad entre tacos… Asientos de cuero y ese adorable olor a \u201cnuevo\u201d, que uno espera que dure por siempre. \u00bfVenden un aerosol con \u201color a auto nuevo\u201d?<\/p>\n
\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 hice algo tan poco ecol\u00f3gico como comprar un auto nuevo? Bueno, s\u00ed ten\u00eda uno muy \u00fatil, pero me lo robaron afuera de un restaurante donde estaba cenando con mi hijo. \u00a1La comida m\u00e1s cara de mi vida! Fue recuperado una semana m\u00e1s tarde desde el INTERIOR de un supermercado donde hab\u00eda sido usado, y gravemente maltratado, en un fallido intento por robar un cajero autom\u00e1tico. Ped\u00ed el divorcio \u2013por abandono y actividad criminal\u2013 y posteriormente recib\u00ed un pago extraordinario de 10,5 millones de pesos (cerca de US$21.000) que -creo- fue justo. S\u00ed, los autos son m\u00e1s caros en Chile que en Estados Unidos.<\/p>\n
Durante mucho tiempo quise dejar el auto como mi principal medio de transporte y me decid\u00ed por dos cletas: una Harley Davidson para viajes m\u00e1s largos y una bicicleta de monta\u00f1a m\u00e1s ligera para los trayectos m\u00e1s cortos, pero la Sra. Eneldo se puso firme (y piso el freno, no<\/span> el acelerador) y dijo que tendr\u00eda que elegir entre la Harley o ella. Pens\u00e9 en esto por 48 horas y luego vot\u00e9 por las opciones: Harley, 49%; la Sra. E, 51%; y as\u00ed fue como tom\u00e9 una decisi\u00f3n sobre el Very Smart XV.<\/p>\n Me sorprendi\u00f3 el vendedor. Era extremadamente educado, pero no ten\u00eda idea de c\u00f3mo funcionaban los muchos juguetitos del auto (\u00a1Me encantan!) y por lo tanto tuvimos que verlos en un manual t\u00e9cnico de 2,5 kg. Eso demor\u00f3 a\u00f1os, porque el manual estaba en espa\u00f1ol, pero la \u201csystems voice\u201d hablaba solo ingl\u00e9s mec\u00e1nico (el japon\u00e9s no era una opci\u00f3n muy \u00fatil\u2026) y, no es de sorprender, que haya terminado siendo una importante prueba de nuestras habilidades para trabajar en equipo. Al final, no hubo forma de que el \u201cGreentooth\u201d del auto (la versi\u00f3n ecol\u00f3gica del Blue\u2026) captara las se\u00f1ales de mi celular de modo que eso me signific\u00f3 tarea para la casa.<\/p>\n Finalmente me fui manejando, m\u00e1s contento que chancho en el barro, solo para quedarme sin gasolina a poco menos de dos kil\u00f3metros de la concesionaria. \u00a1Qu\u00e9 podr\u00eda ser peor! \u00a1El orgulloso due\u00f1o de un Very Smart XV nuevo varado apenas minutos despu\u00e9s de que le entregaron las llaves! Mi sonrisa de auto-aprobaci\u00f3n se convirti\u00f3 en una mirada desfigurada de disgusto. \u00bfC\u00f3mo pudieron hacerme esto? \u00bfQu\u00e9 hubiera costado tener un poco de combustible en el estanque cuando reci\u00e9n te han entregado un jugoso cheque? \u00a140% m\u00e1s que el pago del seguro! Camin\u00e9 en una rabia silente, pateando las piedras, de vuelta al concesionario quien recibi\u00f3, probablemente, la m\u00e1s asombrosa Respuesta Personalizada que le hayan dado. \u201c\u00bfC\u00f3mo pueden ser tan @$$#*&!? \u00bfD\u00f3nde est\u00e1 el jefe? No, no \u00e9l, el Gran Jefe\u2026\u201d Una vez que dej\u00e9 salir algo de ira, me calm\u00e9 hasta que el vendedor muy tontamente remarc\u00f3 que la gasolina era cara y que era peligroso tenerla almacenada en la concesionaria\u2026 Acto seguido \u00a1solt\u00e9 otro barril de ira!<\/p>\n Cuando volv\u00ed a la tierra resolvimos el problema amigable; bueno, fueron muy amables y yo, simplemente, estaba de mal humor. Una lata de \u201cgasolina\u201d se produjo, lo que gener\u00f3 sarcasmo de mi parte\u2026 Me aseguraron que eso ser\u00eda suficiente para llegar a una estaci\u00f3n de servicio, donde podr\u00eda llenar el estanque. Por apenas unos pocos pesos todo esto se podr\u00eda haber evitado, les hice ver a unas sonrisas sin gracia. Finalmente, viaj\u00e9 a casa \u201ccon estilo\u201d con mi \u00e1nimo en alza. En casa pas\u00e9 cerca de 45 minutos jugando con los juguetitos del auto. Entonces, cuando la Sra. Eneldo lleg\u00f3 a casa, le ofrec\u00ed dar una vuelta en mi nuevo Very Smart XV y ella sonri\u00f3 con aprobaci\u00f3n. Nos subimos y gir\u00e9 la llave; \u00a1la bater\u00eda estaba muerta! Ciertamente, no me merec\u00eda esto. Eso fue suficiente por un d\u00eda. It comes with a dashboard screen which provides so much data I will have little time to keep my eyes on the road. I will feel good, quite cool actually, as I cruise around town between traffic jams… Leather seats and that lovely smell of \u201cnew\u201d which one hopes will last forever. Do they sell a \u201cnew car smell\u201d aerosol?<\/p>\n Why did I do something so unecological as to buy a new car? Well, I did have a very useful one but it was stolen from outside a restaurant where I was having dinner with my son. Most expensive meal of my life! It was recovered a week later from INSIDE a supermarket where it had been used, and severely abused, in a failed attempt to steal a cash machine. I filed for divorce \u2013 desertion and criminal activity \u2013 and subsequently received a one-time payment of 10.5 million pesos (about US$21,000) which was, I believe, fair. Yes, cars are more expensive in Chile then in the U.S.A.<\/p>\n I had long wanted to abandon the car as my primary means of transport and decided on two bikes: one a Harley Davidson for the major journeys and the other a lightweight mountain bike for the shorter trips, but Mrs. Eneldo put her foot down (on the brake, not<\/span> the accelerator) and said it would have to be the Harley or her. I thought this through for 48 hours and then voted on the options: Harley \u2013 49%; Mrs. E \u2013 51% and so that is why I decided on the Very Smart XV.<\/p>\n I was surprised by the salesman. He was extremely polite but had no idea how any of the car\u2019s many gadgets worked (I love gadgets!) and so we had to look them up in the 2.5 kg Technical Manual. This took ages as the manual was in Spanish but the \u201csystems voice\u201d spoke only mechanical English (Japanese was not a very helpful option\u2026) and, not surprisingly, turned out to be a major test of our teamwork skills. In the end, there was no way the car\u2019s \u201cGreentooth\u201d (ecofriendly version of Blue\u2026) would pick up the signals from my cellphone so that meant homework for me.<\/p>\n I finally drove away, happier than a pig in mud, only to run out of gas less than a mile from the Showroom. I mean what could be worse! Proud owner of a brand new Very Smart XV stranded just minutes after being given the key! My smile of self-approval turned to a distorted look of disgust. How could they do this to me? What would it take to have a little fuel in the tank when you have just handed over a fat check \u2013 40% more than the insurance payment! I walked in silent rage, kicking stones, back to the dealer who received, probably, his most astonishing ever Personalized Customer Service Response. \u201cHow could you possibly be so @$$#*&!? Where is the Boss? No, not him, the Big Boss\u2026\u201d Once I had let off some steam, I calmed down until the salesman very foolishly remarked that gas was expensive and dangerous to store in the Showroom\u2026 Thereupon I blew another barrel of steam!<\/p>\n When I came back to earth we solved the problem amicably; well, they were very nice and I just sulked. A can of \u201cgas\u201d was produced, which invoked sarcasm from me\u2026 I was assured this would be enough to get me to a service station where I could fill up. For just a few pesos all this could have been avoided, I pointed out to flat smiles. Finally, I cruised home \u201cin style\u201d with my mood on the up. At home I spent about 45 minutes playing with the car\u2019s gadgets. Then, when Mrs. Eneldo got home, I offered her a ride in my new Very Smart XV and she smiled approvingly. We got in and I turned the key; the battery was dead! I certainly did not deserve this. That was enough for one day.
