El ferviente apoyo al libre comercio fue el mensaje recurrente de la reuni\u00f3n de mitad de a\u00f1o de la Asociaci\u00f3n de C\u00e1maras Americanas de Comercio en Latinoam\u00e9rica y el Caribe (AACCLA, por su sigla en ingl\u00e9s) celebrada en Ciudad de M\u00e9xico entre el 14 y el 16 de mayo.<\/p>\n
El evento reuni\u00f3 a las 23 AmChams de Am\u00e9rica Latina. AmCham Chile fue representada por su presidente, Javier Irarr\u00e1zaval, y por su director ejecutivo, Rodrigo Ballivi\u00e1n. Kathleen Barclay, miembro del consejo asesor de AmCham, tambi\u00e9n asisti\u00f3 a la conferencia.<\/p>\n
El presidente de M\u00e9xico, Felipe Calder\u00f3n, quien pronunci\u00f3 el discurso inaugural de la conferencia, se refiri\u00f3 de manera elocuente a las ventajas del libre comercio para el pueblo de M\u00e9xico y la regi\u00f3n. El mandatario defendi\u00f3 vigorosamente el libre comercio y los mercados abiertos como claves para cimentar la competitividad global. Adem\u00e1s, enfatiz\u00f3 la importancia de invertir en infraestructura y educaci\u00f3n como complementos de las pol\u00edticas de libre comercio y rechaz\u00f3 con firmeza el proteccionismo.<\/p>\n
El presidente Calder\u00f3n se refiri\u00f3 adem\u00e1s a la importancia de la integraci\u00f3n regional, indicando el s\u00f3lido respaldo a la Alianza del Pac\u00edfico (Mexico, Chile, Colombia y Per\u00fa), adem\u00e1s de al Acuerdo Transpac\u00edfico (o TPP, por su sigla en ingl\u00e9s). Ambas alianzas demuestran el apoyo a estrategias que mejoran una mayor competitividad en la relaci\u00f3n de Am\u00e9rica Latina con Asia.<\/p>\n
Otro punto destacado de la conferencia fue la suscripci\u00f3n de un memorando de entendimiento entre el Departamento de Comercio de Estados Unidos y varias AmCham, incluida AmCham Chile. El acuerdo hace posible el intercambio de informaci\u00f3n sobre oportunidades comerciales para peque\u00f1as y medianas empresas en Estados Unidos que surjan dentro de la regi\u00f3n y que ser\u00e1n canalizadas a trav\u00e9s de las AmCham en alianza con las embajadas de Estados Unidos a lo largo de la regi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n
Francisco S\u00e1nchez, subsecretario de Comercio Internacional del Departamento de Comercio de Estados Unidos, firm\u00f3 el acuerdo y pronunci\u00f3 el discurso del almuerzo, en el que deline\u00f3 la agenda comercial de Estados Unidos. El subsecretario S\u00e1nchez destac\u00f3 la importancia del convenio e indic\u00f3 que se relaciona de manera directa con las prioridades de creaci\u00f3n de empleo del presidente Barack Obama.<\/p>\n
Las AmCham estuvieron complacidas de o\u00edr sobre el compromiso en curso de Estados Unidos con el libre comercio y celebraron la implementaci\u00f3n del tratado de libre comercio entre Estados Unidos y Colombia, el que entr\u00f3 en vigencia el 15 de mayo.<\/p>\n
El Departamento de Estado de Estados Unidos tambi\u00e9n estuvo representado en el evento. El embajador de Estados Unidos en Chile, Alejandro Wolff, se uni\u00f3 a sus colegas de M\u00e9xico, Jamaica, Per\u00fa y Costa Rica, adem\u00e1s de al subsecretario de Estado, Thomas Nides. Los embajadores participaron en un panel que analiz\u00f3 c\u00f3mo trabajar de la manera m\u00e1s efectiva con la comunidad empresarial estadounidense a lo largo de la regi\u00f3n. A ello sigui\u00f3 un di\u00e1logo abierto y constructivo con delegados de las AmCham. La conversaci\u00f3n fue una continuaci\u00f3n de la reuni\u00f3n de febrero encabezada por Hilary Clinton entre el Departamento de Estado de Estados Unidos y las AmCham del mundo, ocasi\u00f3n en la que AmCham Chile fue representada por Javier Irarr\u00e1zaval.<\/p>\n
AACCLA y las AmCham adem\u00e1s aprovecharon la oportunidad para conferir su mayor honor -el premio Eagle of the Americas- al ex presidente peruano Alan Garc\u00eda por su trabajo en respaldo del libre comercio en el hemisferio, lo que qued\u00f3 representado en el tratado de libre comercio de Estados Unidos con Per\u00fa, el que entr\u00f3 en vigencia en febrero del 2009. El ex presidente Garc\u00eda se refiri\u00f3 apasionadamente a la contribuci\u00f3n del libre comercio al desarrollo exitoso del hemisferio.<\/p>\n
En general, la reuni\u00f3n fue muy exitosa en reunir a l\u00edderes de las AmCham de Am\u00e9rica Latina y el Caribe para hacer networking y reforzar su compromiso con la promoci\u00f3n del libre comercio y la inversi\u00f3n en el hemisferio occidental.<\/p>\n

AmCham Chile was represented by its president, Javier Irarr\u00e1zaval, and executive director, Rodrigo Ballivi\u00e1n. Kathleen Barclay, a member of AmCham’s advisory council, was also in attendance.<\/p>\n Mexico\u2019s President Felipe Calder\u00f3n, who gave the keynote speech at the conference, spoke eloquently of the advantages of free trade for the people of Mexico and the region. He vigorously defended free trade and open markets as critical to building global competitiveness. In addition, he emphasized the importance of investment in infrastructure and education as complements to free trade policies and strongly rejected protectionism.<\/p>\n President Calder\u00f3n also spoke of the importance of regional integration, indicating strong support for the Pacific Alliance (Mexico, Chile, Colombia and Peru), as well as for the Trans- Pacific Partnership. Both alliances demonstrate strategic support for strategies that enhance increased competitiveness of the Latin American Region vis-\u00e0-vis Asia.<\/p>\n Another highlight of the conference was the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the US Department of Commerce and several AmChams including AmCham Chile. The agreement provides for the exchange of information regarding business opportunities for small and medium-sized companies in the United States that arise within the region and which will be channeled through the AmChams working in partnership with US embassies across the region.<\/p>\n Francisco S\u00e1nchez, Under Secretary for International Trade at the United States Department of Commerce, signed the agreement and delivered the luncheon address outlining the United States\u2019 trade agenda. Under Secretary S\u00e1nchez stressed the importance of the agreement, indicating that it is directly related to President\u2019s Obama\u2019s jobs creation priorities.<\/p>\n The AmChams were pleased to hear of the United States\u2019 ongoing commitment to free trade and celebrated the implementation of the US-Colombian Free Trade Agreement that came into effect on May 15.<\/p>\n The US State Department was well represented. The US Ambassador to Chile, Alejandro Wolff, was joined by his colleagues from Mexico, Jamaica, Peru, and Costa Rica, as well as Deputy Secretary of State, Thomas Nides. The Ambassadors held a panel discussion on how to most effectively work with the US business community across the region. An open and constructive dialogue followed with delegates from the AmChams. The conversation was a follow-up to the February meeting hosted by Hilary Clinton between the US State Department and AmChams from around the world where AmCham Chile was represented by Javier Irarr\u00e1zaval.<\/p>\n AACCLA and the AmChams also took the opportunity to confer their highest honor \u2013 the Eagle of the Americas award – on former Peruvian President Alan Garc\u00eda for his work in support of hemispheric free trade as embodied in the US- Peru FTA that came into effect in February, 2009.
