Ahora estamos hablando de tatuajes en todo el cuerpo con un Arca de No\u00e9 de una selecci\u00f3n de animales, patrones entrelazados, serpientes enrolladas y \u00e1ngeles en ascenso. Muchos de los m\u00e1s reconocidos jugadores de f\u00fatbol de Chile tienen sus brazos (y quiz\u00e1s m\u00e1s) cubiertos con un mosaico de tatuajes; otros aparentemente, \u00a1no tienen ninguno!<\/p>\n Por supuesto los tatuajes no son nada nuevo, ellos se remontan a nuestros ancestros y a menudo fueron parte de un ritual de iniciaci\u00f3n hacia la adultez. Para confirmar su compromiso Angelina ten\u00eda tatuado \u201cBilly Bob\u201d<\/em> en su brazo. Cuando lo dej\u00f3 para estar con Brad Pitt, Jolie habr\u00eda dicho “nunca voy a ser tan est\u00fapida como para tatuarme de nuevo el nombre de un hombre”, pero \u00a1se necesito un complicado procedimiento l\u00e1ser para eliminar el recuerdo!<\/p>\n Este mism\u00edsimo verano, en una playa en la zona central de Chile, vi a una pareja (no chilena) apuestamente ataviada usando trajes iguales gris oscuro con un toque de rojo y azul por aqu\u00ed y por all\u00e1. Al acercarme me di cuenta de que estaban casi desnudos (solo las partes esenciales estaban cubiertas) y que los trajes en realidad eran tatuajes de pies a cabeza. Aparte de las plantas de sus pies y las palmas de sus manos no hab\u00eda piel \u201cnatural\u201d que ver. \u00a1Estaba consternado! La inversi\u00f3n de tiempo, dinero, acuerdo en temas apropiados (o inapropiados) y luego la explicaci\u00f3n a los amigos y la familia: \u201cbueno, esto representa a Venus al amanecer y por ac\u00e1 est\u00e1 Poseid\u00f3n; ah, y aqu\u00ed est\u00e1 el venado Frankie al que le dispararon con una ballesta; s\u00ed, se puede ver la sangre…\u201d<\/p>\n Como soldado en una vida pasada recuerdo bien los tatuajes est\u00e1ndares (las rubias mienten mejor<\/em>, escrito entre los dedos\u2026) pero tambi\u00e9n las bromas echas a los amigos cuando hab\u00edan bebido demasiado ron. Una broma com\u00fan era llevar al supuesto \u201camigo\u201d a un lugar de tatuajes y hacer que le escribieran el nombre de una chica en su brazo, usualmente adentro de un coraz\u00f3n. Al d\u00eda siguiente un furioso soldado preguntar\u00eda desesperadamente por qu\u00e9 ten\u00eda tatuado \u201cBetty\u201d en su brazo derecho cuando el nombre de su mujer era Candice\u2026 \u00a1Los horrores de la guerra!<\/p>\n Mi favorito fue un trabajo de arte bastante impresionante y, seg\u00fan me dijeron, muy costoso. El tipo debi\u00f3 haber estado verdaderamente borracho. Era una escena completa de caza de zorros, donde los cazadores estaban galopando en su pecho; los perros estaban saltando por su espalda y el zorro estaba \u201cagazapado\u201d (como se dice) y solo su peluda cola era evidente para cualquiera que hiciera una inspecci\u00f3n suficientemente cercana. How do you live with the \u201cbody art\u201d of your youth when you are 40, 50 or 60? It is extremely difficult to erase\u2026<\/p>\n You may recall an actor named Billy Bob Thornton who was in love (Hollywood style) with Angelina Jolie. To endorse this commitment Angelina had \u201cBilly Bob\u201d<\/em> tattooed on her arm. When she moved on to be with Brad Pitt she supposedly said “I’ll never be stupid enough to have a man’s name tattooed on me again”, but it required a messy laser job to remove the memory!<\/p>\n This very summer, at a beach in central Chile, I saw a smartly attired couple (not Chilean) wearing matching dark grey outfits with a dash of red and blue here and there. On getting closer I realized they were all but naked (just the essentials covered) and the outfits were actually head-to-toe tattoos. Aside from the soles of their feet and the palms of their hands there was no \u201cnatural\u201d skin to be seen. I was aghast! The investment in time, money, agreeing on appropriate (or inappropriate) themes, and then the explaining to friends and family: \u201cwell this represents Venus at dawn and over here is Poseidon; oh, and here is the deer Frankie shot with a crossbow \u2013 yes, you can see the blood…\u201d<\/p>\n As a soldier in a former life I well remember the standard tattoos (Blondes lie best<\/em>, two four-letter words spelt over eight knuckles\u2026) but also the pranks played on friends when they had imbibed too much rum. A common prank was to wheel said \u201cfriend\u201d into a tattoo parlor and have a girl\u2019s name needled onto his arm, usually inside a heart. The next day a furious soldier would ask despairingly why he had \u201cBetty\u201d tattooed on his right arm when his wife\u2019s name is Candice\u2026 The horrors of war!!<\/p>\n My favorite was a quite stunning and, I was told, very costly work of art. The guy must have been truly plastered. It was a full English fox hunting scene where the huntsmen were galloping up his chest; the hounds were bounding down his back and the fox was \u201cgoing to ground\u201d (as it is called) with only his bushy tail evident to anyone making a close enough inspection. Fascinating \u2013 but it is for life!!<\/p>\n So, what should I do? Tattoo or not tattoo? I am considering a few short, meaningful phrases and your opinion would be very valuable:<\/p>\n In the end I have decided to delay my tattoo because I cannot for the life of me decide on what \u201cstatement\u201d I wish to make.
