Es grato ser popular y maravilloso ser querido, y como pol\u00edtico siempre es placentero ser lo uno o lo otro.<\/p>\n
El presidente Pi\u00f1era acaba de pasar (el 11 de marzo) la mitad de sus cuatro a\u00f1os de mandato y el presidente Obama se prepara para enfrentar al candidato republicano, aunque este a\u00fan debe ser elegido.<\/p>\n
La ret\u00f3rica en ambos pa\u00edses nos har\u00eda creer que estamos siendo gobernados por est\u00fapidos incompetentes cuyo \u00fanico prop\u00f3sito es sobrevivir a su mandato presidencial o (en el caso de Obama) ganar la reelecci\u00f3n y -en definitiva- asegurar una noble posici\u00f3n en la historia.<\/p>\n
La campa\u00f1a ya empez\u00f3 en Chile y unas 10 personas dentro de los partidos que componen la coalici\u00f3n opositora se dan empellones por la atenci\u00f3n de la prensa y subir en las encuestas.<\/p>\n
En Estados Unidos, los candidatos republicanos parecen estar haciendo un trabajo tan maravilloso de difamaci\u00f3n de sus rivales que quedar\u00e1 poco para que Obama ataque cuando la campa\u00f1a real, que precede a la elecci\u00f3n de noviembre, se ponga en marcha.<\/p>\n
Lo que parece com\u00fan en ambos pa\u00edses es la falta de apoyo de las bases para los dos presidentes en funciones. Recientes encuestas sugieren que (casi) nadie quiere a Pi\u00f1era -a pesar de la continua fortaleza de la econom\u00eda chilena y la menor tasa de desempleo\u2013 pero luego \u00a1tampoco nadie quiere a ninguno de los l\u00edderes \u201ctradicionales\u201d de la oposici\u00f3n!<\/p>\n
Al mismo tiempo, parece haber una falta de apoyo de gente que quiera a Obama, pero de nuevo, ninguno de los aspirantes republicanos ha generado mucho afecto; ha sido m\u00e1s una cuesti\u00f3n de votar por el menor de dos, tres o cuatro males.<\/p>\n
Entonces, \u00bfd\u00f3nde nos deja esto? Pi\u00f1era tiene poco menos de dos a\u00f1os de su mandato de cuatro a\u00f1os para implementar, de manera exitosa, todas las promesas que hizo durante su campa\u00f1a; en realidad es menos dado que perder\u00e1 efectivamente el poder despu\u00e9s de la elecci\u00f3n presidencial de noviembre del 2013.<\/p>\n
Al momento de escribir estas l\u00edneas, Chile experimenta un nivel sin precedentes de agitaci\u00f3n social que posiblemente continuar\u00e1 durante todo el 2012. Por su parte, Obama enfrenta decisiones muy dif\u00edciles sobre Irak y Afganist\u00e1n, adem\u00e1s de la necesidad de vital importancia de reactivar la econom\u00eda antes de que los votantes se dirijan a las urnas el 6 de noviembre.<\/p>\n
Entonces, \u00bfpor qu\u00e9 nuestros actuales l\u00edderes (Pi\u00f1era y Obama) y casi la totalidad de quienes se ofrecen para el escrutinio p\u00fablico son tan poco queridos? Muy simple; los votantes han aprendido a no ser embaucados por pol\u00edticos con mucha labia quienes prometen todo. <\/em>En cambio, medir\u00e1n a los candidatos o presidentes contra un simple gr\u00e1fico de lo que ofrecen versus lo que entregan y \u00a1\u201cEn serio, no quiero escuchar sus excusas<\/em>\u201d!<\/p>\n Quiz\u00e1s Pi\u00f1era ofreci\u00f3 hacer demasiado durante su mandato de cuatro a\u00f1os y quiz\u00e1s Obama no fue, y no ha sido, lo suficientemente espec\u00edfico sobre sus promesas y logros. No obstante, cualquiera que espere obtener el principal trabajo en los dos pa\u00edses lo conseguir\u00e1 porque la gente cree que \u00e9l o ella cumplir\u00e1n con lo que prometen. Y si usted gana, qu\u00e9dese con los guantes de boxeo despu\u00e9s de la lucha electoral, porque habr\u00e1 muchas batallas por delante.<\/p>\n S\u00ed, los tiempos son duros y las econom\u00edas est\u00e1n bajo amenaza. La globalizaci\u00f3n est\u00e1 muy bien, siempre y cuando lo negativo (las p\u00e9rdidas de empleo, la mayor inflaci\u00f3n, las incertidumbres del mercado, etc.) no ME afecten.<\/p>\n Pero quienes, por la raz\u00f3n que sea, aspiran a la principal oficina en el territorio h\u00e1ganlo (espero) sabiendo que deben lidiar con temas extremadamente complejos y no solo para ser elogiados por rescatar mineros o llegar a un acuerdo sobre el endeudamiento de la naci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n Si quiere ser querido, convi\u00e9rtase en un gran comediante o fil\u00e1ntropo, quiz\u00e1s incluso un pediatra, autor, cantante o personalidad deportiva. En palabras del gran Bardo de Avon, el juego de la pol\u00edtica es m\u00e1s una \u201cComedia de las Equivocaciones\u201d y a veces, como Julio C\u00e9sar nos recordar\u00eda, sus propios adeptos leales los cortar\u00e1n si la voluntad del Senado no se atiende adecuadamente.<\/p>\n \u00bfCu\u00e1n fuerte pueden caer los poderosos? Bueno, depende de la altura del pedestal que se han construido. Ya no hay espacio para el amor en la pol\u00edtica o el Gobierno, solo un s\u00f3lido desempe\u00f1o. Quiz\u00e1s nuestros l\u00edderes deber\u00edan aprender a ser felices con \u201crespeto y aceptaci\u00f3n\u201d y, finalmente, un sincero agradecimiento por una labor bien hecha.<\/em><\/p>\n Sigo ingenuamente optimista sobre el futuro y la capacidad de la humanidad para elegir a un ganador\u2026<\/p>\n Santiago Eneldo<\/p>\n (Maltratos y comentarios pol\u00edticos \u00fatiles a: santiagoeneldo@yahoo.com)<\/p>\n <\/p>\n It is nice to be liked and wonderful to be loved and as a politician it is always pleasant to be one or the other.<\/p>\n President Pi\u00f1era has just passed (on March 11) the halfway mark of his four-year presidency and President Obama is warming up to take on the Republican nominee \u2013 as yet undecided.<\/p>\n The rhetoric in both countries would have us believe we are being governed by incompetent halfwits whose sole purpose is to survive their presidential term, or (in Mr. Obama\u2019s case) win reelection, and ultimately secure a noble position in history.<\/p>\n Campaigning has already started in Chile and some 10 individuals within the parties comprising the opposition coalition are jostling for press time and upward movement in the polls.<\/p>\n In the U.S.A., the Republican candidates seem to be doing such a wonderful job of character assassination on their rivals that there will be little left for Obama to attack when the real campaign, leading up to the November election, gets underway.<\/p>\n What seems to be common in both countries is the lack of grass roots support for both incumbent presidents. Recent polls suggest that (almost) nobody loves Mr. Pi\u00f1era \u2013 despite the continued strength of the Chilean economy and lower jobless rate \u2013 but then nobody loves any of the \u201ctraditional\u201d leaders of the opposition either!<\/p>\n At the same time, there appears to be a lack of loving support for Mr. Obama but, then again, not one of the Republican aspirants has generated much affection; it has been more a question of voting for the lesser of two, three or four evils.<\/p>\n So where does this leave us? Mr. Pi\u00f1era has just under two years of his four-year mandate to implement, successfully, all the promises made during his campaign; it is actually less since he will effectively lose power after the presidential election in November 2013.<\/p>\n At the time of writing, Chile is experiencing an unprecedented level of social unrest which is likely to continue throughout 2012. Meanwhile, Mr. Obama faces very tough choices on Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the vitally important need to put fire back into the economy before voters go to the polls on November 6.<\/p>\n So, why are our current leaders (Pi\u00f1era and Obama) and almost all of those offering themselves for public dissection so unloved? Very simple; voters have learned not to be suckered by smooth-talking politicians who promise everything. <\/em>Instead, they will measure candidates or presidents against a simple graph of what they offer versus what they deliver and \u201cI really don\u2019t want to listen to your excuses<\/em>\u201d!<\/p>\n Perhaps Pi\u00f1era offered to do too much during his four-year tenure and maybe Obama was not, and has not been, specific enough about his promises and accomplishments. Regardless, anyone who expects to win the top job in either country will get there because people believe he or she will deliver what they promise. And if you win, keep the boxing gloves on after the electoral fight because there will be many a battle to come.<\/p>\n Yes, times are tough and economies are under threat. Globalization is all very well, providing the downside (job losses, higher inflation, market uncertainties, etc.) doesn\u2019t affect ME.<\/p>\n But those who, for whatever motive, aspire to the highest office in the land do so (I hope) knowing they must deal with extremely complex issues and not just to be praised for rescuing miners, or for reaching an agreement on the nation\u2019s indebtedness.<\/p>\n If you want to be loved, become a great comedian or philanthropist \u2013 perhaps even a pediatrician, author, singer or sports personality. In the words of the great Bard of Avon, the game of politics is more a \u201cComedy of Errors\u201d and sometimes, as Julius Caesar would remind us, your own loyal supporters will cut you down if the will of the Senate is not being properly served.<\/p>\n How high can the mighty fall? Well, it depends on the height of the pedestal they have built for themselves. There is no longer room for love in politics or government, just a solid performance.
