Resulta que fui masculinstruido, <\/em>no educado como la mayor\u00eda de ustedes. Por esta raz\u00f3n apoyo completamente a los estudiantes que han llevado sus demandas a las calles y negocian directamente con el presidente. Sin lugar a dudas, para cuando usted lea esto ya tendremos colegios gratuitos y universidades gratuitas para todos, pero probablemente sin una educaci\u00f3n de calidad <\/em>como el componente primario de la ecuaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n Me enviaron a un internado cuando ten\u00eda 8 a\u00f1os de edad, lugar donde permanec\u00ed hasta que aparec\u00ed en el mundo casi a los 18 a\u00f1os. Un internado \u201csolo para hombres\u201d y sal\u00ed relativamente normal, pero sin ninguna esperanza de entrar a la universidad. Ver\u00e1n, yo era \u201cdel mont\u00f3n\u201d y fue identificado como tal muy tempranamente. De modo que estaba ah\u00ed mucho por el beneficio del colegio y no para lucrar de la educaci\u00f3n que se me entregaba. \u00bfEra un mal alumno? No era un gran alumno, admito abiertamente, pero ten\u00eda lo que describir\u00eda como \u201ctalentos no descubiertos\u201d. Ten\u00eda una terrible tartamudez, que era una desventaja (una verbal supongo…) y que trajo como consecuencia que yo fuera el t\u00e9rmino de muchos chistes o bromas; es incre\u00edble \u00a1cu\u00e1ntos ni\u00f1os pod\u00edan desarrollar tartamudez instant\u00e1nea cuando estaban a mi alrededor!<\/p>\n Por romper ciertas reglas era golpeado por un inspector, un maestro e incluso por el director, \u00a1pero nunca por la polic\u00eda! Este era un castigo muy normal y hab\u00eda una ceremonia a su alrededor, similar a la marcha de un preso sentenciado que se dirige al pat\u00edbulo o la silla el\u00e9ctrica. Seis golpes con una ca\u00f1a o una vara en el trasero dejan una evidencia bastante significativa, pero la valent\u00eda era esencial. Descubr\u00ed que la sobrevivencia heroica al \u201cinsulto\u201d para con mi parte posterior en realidad aumentaba mi estatus y el premio eran \u00a1nuevos amigos! \u00a1Era un h\u00e9roe! \u00a1Qu\u00e9 raro!<\/p>\n Masculinstruido<\/em>: Mi formaci\u00f3n acad\u00e9mica estaba dise\u00f1ada para convertirme en un \u201chombre\u201d y esto significaba \u201ccosas de hombre\u201d y aceptar golpes con un silencioso orgullo y un cierto desd\u00e9n. Saldr\u00eda \u201cal mundo y ser\u00eda un HOMBRE\u201d – \u00a1GUAU!<\/p>\n Bueno, soy un HOMBRE, pero no totalmente emancipado incluso ahora. Muchos a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, cuando vivimos en Kentucky, me llamaron del a Oficina del Ciclo Medio y el director me pidi\u00f3 permiso para \u201cpaletear\u201d a mi hijo. No puedo recordar cu\u00e1l fue la ofensa, pero s\u00ed recuerdo haber pensado \u201csi fue bueno para m\u00ed (\u00a1y no tengo ninguna prueba en lo absoluto de que lo fue!), ser\u00e1 bueno para mi hijo\u201d y de modo que fue paleteado<\/em>. A\u00fan nos dirigimos la palabra. Sin embargo, esta pr\u00e1ctica pronto fue declarada ilegal por ser \u201ccruel\u201d y hacer un uso \u201cinnecesario de la fuerza\u201d o algo as\u00ed.<\/p>\n Miro hacia atr\u00e1s a mi masculinstrucci\u00f3n <\/em>como un total fracaso en todas las \u00e1reas, excepto el deporte donde era muy bueno y mi tartamudez no pod\u00eda disminuir mis habilidades, mientras que recitar unas pocas l\u00edneas de Shakespeare pod\u00eda traer consigo dolor tanto a mi mente como, durante el intermedio, \u00a1a mi cuerpo!<\/p>\n A\u00f1oro una educaci\u00f3n de calidad, quiz\u00e1s m\u00e1s con el beneficio de la retrospectiva que en ese entonces. Durante todos mis a\u00f1os en este planeta, he conocido a solo cuatro grandes profesores e hicieron suficiente para que yo sobreviviera y aprendiera y quisiera aprender m\u00e1s<\/em>: los de franc\u00e9s (de los 9 a los 11 a\u00f1os), historia (de los 14 a los 16 a\u00f1os), mec\u00e1nica (de los 23 a los 24 a\u00f1os) e historia del arte (a los 50 a\u00f1os). Estos cuatro ten\u00edan una pasi\u00f3n por la ense\u00f1anza que influ\u00eda en sus estudiantes y sin ellos a\u00fan estar\u00eda lavando autos para ganarme la vida y \u00a1\u00a1\u00a1la Sra. Eneldo nunca se hubiera casado conmigo\u2026!!<\/p>\n Jesucristo fue llamado Maestro. Mahoma y Buda fueron maestros. La mayor\u00eda de los hombres respetados en la Antigua Grecia y Roma fueron maestros o fil\u00f3sofos. Mahatma Gandhi, aunque abogado por formaci\u00f3n, fue un extraordinario maestro y lo mismo podr\u00eda decirse de Nelson Mandela y de muchos, muchos otros.<\/p>\n Si este art\u00edculo tiene un tema, y quisiera pensar que mis esfuerzos no han sido completamente desperdiciados en usted, es enfatizar que el futuro de este pa\u00eds radica en volver a poner el orgullo en la profesi\u00f3n de profesor: SER PROFESOR Y ESTAR ORGULLOSO DE ELLO. Necesitamos profesores de calidad, consistencia, entusiasmo y compasi\u00f3n y esto no tiene \u00a1nada que ver con la edad! Grandes maestros pueden mantener la atenci\u00f3n de un estudiante sin importar el entorno f\u00edsico. Ellos hacen que los estudiantes QUIERAN aprender y si uno quiere aprender, los resultados mejoran dr\u00e1sticamente. P\u00e1guenles bien, h\u00f3nrenlos, resp\u00e9tenlos y de todas maneras eval\u00faenlos de manera regular de modo que los grandes profesores sean recompensados y los malos sean ayudados o reemplazados.<\/p>\n Golpear a los estudiantes solamente causa dolor. For this reason I am fully supportive of the students who have taken their demands to the streets and negotiated directly with the President. No doubt, by the time you read this we will already have free schools and universities for all, but probably without a quality education<\/em> as the primary component in the equation.<\/p>\n I was sent away to boarding school aged 8 where I remained until I \u201cplopped\u201d out into the world aged almost 18. A \u201cboys only\u201d boarding school and yet I emerged relatively normal but without any hope of getting into university. You see, I was an \u201calso ran\u201d and identified as such early on. So, I was there very much for the profit of the school and not to profit greatly from the education I was provided with. Was I a bad student? Not a great one, I freely admit, but I had what I would describe as \u201cundiscovered talents\u201d. I had a bad stammer which was a handicap (a verbal-cap I suppose…) and resulted in me being the butt of many a joke or prank; amazing how many boys could develop instant stammers when around me!<\/p>\n For breaking certain rules I was beaten by a Prefect, a Master or even the Headmaster \u2013 but never by the police! This was very normal punishment and there was ceremony about it, similar to the march of a convicted felon to the gallows or electric chair. Six strikes with a cane or switch on the backside leave quite significant evidence, but bravery was essential. I discovered that heroically surviving the \u201cinsult\u201d to my rear end actually raised my status and the reward was new friends! I was a hero! Weird!<\/p>\n Edumancated<\/em>: My scholastic formation was designed to make a \u201cman\u201d of me and this meant doing \u201cmanly things\u201d and accepting beatings with silent pride and a certain disdain. I would \u201cgo out into the world and be a MAN\u201d \u2013 wow<\/em><\/strong>!!<\/p>\n Well, I am a MAN but not fully emancipated even now. Many years later, when we lived in Kentucky, I was called from the Middle School Office and the Principal asked for permission to \u201cpaddle\u201d my son. I cannot remember what the offence was but I do recall thinking \u201cif it was good for me (and I have absolutely no proof it was!), it will be good for my son\u201d and so he was paddled<\/em>. We are still on speaking terms. However, this practice was soon outlawed as being \u201ccruel and unnecessary force\u201d or something similar.<\/p>\n I look back on my edumancation<\/em> as a total failure in all areas except sport where I was pretty good and my stammer could not diminish my skills \u2013 whereas reciting a few lines from Shakespeare could bring pain both to my mind and, during break, my body!<\/p>\n I yearned for a quality education, perhaps more with the benefit of hindsight than at the time. During all my years on this planet I have known only four great teachers and they did just enough for me to survive and learn and want to learn more<\/em>: French (aged 9 to 11), History (aged 14 to 16), Mechanics (aged 23 to 24) and Art History (aged 50). These four had a passion for teaching which rubbed off on this student and without them I would still be washing cars for a living and Mrs. Eneldo would never have married me\u2026!!<\/p>\n Jesus Christ was called Teacher. Mohammed and Buddha were teachers. The most respected men of their time in Ancient Greece and Rome were teachers or philosophers. Mahatma Gandhi, although a lawyer by training, was an extraordinary teacher and the same could be said of Nelson Mandela and many, many others.<\/p>\n If there is a point to this article, and I would like to think my efforts have not been entirely wasted on you, it is to emphasize that the future of this country lies in putting pride back into the teaching profession: BE A TEACHER AND BE PROUD OF IT. We need teachers of quality, consistency, enthusiasm and compassion and this has nothing to do with age! Great teachers can hold a student\u2019s attention regardless of the physical environment. They make students WANT to learn and if you want to learn, results will improve dramatically. Pay them well, honor them, respect them and by all means evaluate them regularly so the great ones are rewarded and the poor ones helped or replaced.<\/p>\n Beating students just causes pain.
