Conectar nuevas centrales a la principal red el\u00e9ctrica de Chile, el Sistema Interconectado Central (SIC), implica colocar cables de alto voltaje entre grandes torres de transmisi\u00f3n y obtener los respectivos permisos de derecho de paso a trav\u00e9s de acueductos y \u00e1reas protegidas. Estas l\u00edneas adem\u00e1s representan un peligro a la seguridad. A medida que crece la demanda energ\u00e9tica de Chile, las mayores cargas el\u00e9ctricas podr\u00edan hacer que se recalienten y se <span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\">curven<\/span>, lo que pondr\u00eda en peligro a los veh\u00edculos, embarcaciones y animales que est\u00e9n pasando debajo de ellos<\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD; mso-bidi-font-family: \"Times New Roman\";' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-CL;' lang=\"ES-CL\">Sin embargo,<\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\"> la firma estadounidense 3M -que elabora miles de productos incluidas las <span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\">notas autoadhesivas <\/span>Post-it y la cinta adhesiva Scotch- tiene la soluci\u00f3n. Se llama Conductor de Aluminio Reforzado con Compuesto (ACCR, por su sigla en ingl\u00e9s), un cable patentado altamente conductivo que, seg\u00fan 3M, duplica con creces la capacidad de transmisi\u00f3n de los cables convencionales del mismo di\u00e1metro.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">Desarrollado originalmente en la d\u00e9cada de los 90 con el respaldo del Departamento de Energ\u00eda de Estados Unidos y sometido a pruebas en su Laboratorio Nacional de Oak Ridge, la tecnolog\u00eda de compuesto usada en el ACCR fue dise\u00f1ada para proteger las naves espaciales de la NASA de incendiarse cuando reingresan a la atm\u00f3sfera terrestre<\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD; mso-bidi-font-family: \"Times New Roman\";' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">Como resultado, es capaz de resistir temperaturas de hasta cerca de 210\u00b0C, lo que se compara con los 75\u00b0C que aguanta un cable tradicional<\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\"> El n\u00facleo, compuesto de 5.000 microfibras de \u00f3xido de aluminio, est\u00e1 envuelto en una aleaci\u00f3n dura de aluminio y zirconio para garantizar tanto su desempe\u00f1o como su durabilidad en las altas temperaturas que se registran en las l\u00edneas de transmisi\u00f3n de alto voltaje.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">\u201cEl bajo peso y la resistencia al calor del cable significan que puede transportar el doble de la capacidad en distancias m\u00e1s largas con menos pandeo\u201d, se\u00f1ala Pablo Wallach, gerente pa\u00eds del \u00c1rea El\u00e9ctrica y Telecomunicaciones de 3M Chile. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">Brasil fue el primer pa\u00eds sudamericano en adoptar la tecnolog\u00eda de 3M en el 2008 y hasta ahora ha sido usada por seis empresas el\u00e9ctricas en esa naci\u00f3n, principalmente para mejoramiento de l\u00edneas en \u00e1reas urbanas congestionadas as\u00ed como tambi\u00e9n sobre \u00e1reas naturales y cruces de r\u00edos. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">\u201cEs mucho m\u00e1s sencillo y eficiente en t\u00e9rminos de costos que construir una torre en la mitad de un r\u00edo, y tiene la mitad del impacto ambiental\u201d, explica Wallach. 3M recientemente recibi\u00f3 un pedido para un s\u00e9ptimo proyecto en Brasil y la tecnolog\u00eda tambi\u00e9n se ha utilizado en el cruce de un r\u00edo en Argentina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">En Chile, 3M est\u00e1 negociando con un distribuidor local para instalar una peque\u00f1a secci\u00f3n de l\u00ednea el pr\u00f3ximo a\u00f1o y, seg\u00fan Wallach, pronto m\u00e1s empresas podr\u00edan estar usando el cable para reemplazar l\u00edneas antiguas o<\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD; mso-bidi-font-family: \"Times New Roman\";' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">,<\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\"> sobre distancias m\u00e1s largas, a fin de conectar nuevas centrales a la red<\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD; mso-bidi-font-family: \"Times New Roman\";' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">,<\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\"> a medida que la demanda de energ\u00eda crezca<\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD; mso-bidi-font-family: \"Times New Roman\";' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">,<\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\"> estas l\u00edneas se sobrecargar\u00e1n, sostiene Jos\u00e9 Sanzana, subgerente de Marketing del \u00c1rea El\u00e9ctrica de 3M Chile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">La capacidad de muchas l\u00edneas de alto voltaje en Santiago se alcanzar\u00e1 en los pr\u00f3ximos cinco a diez a\u00f1os, predice Sanzana, pero las torres existentes podr\u00edan no soportar el peso de un cable adicional y construir nuevas torres para desplegar una l\u00ednea paralela puede ser muy costoso si es que no imposible en \u00e1reas urbanas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">\u201cNadie quiere una nueva torre en su patio trasero de modo que la alternativa m\u00e1s eficiente en t\u00e9rminos de costos es incrementar la capacidad de las l\u00edneas existentes\u201d, se\u00f1ala Sanzana<\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD; mso-bidi-font-family: \"Times New Roman\";' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">.<\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\"> \u201cY debido a esta dependencia, creemos que nuestra tecnolog\u00eda es la mejor soluci\u00f3n\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">Otro beneficio para los distribuidores el\u00e9ctricos es la larga vida. El cable ACCR est\u00e1 fabricado \u00edntegramente en aluminio lo que lo hace menos susceptible a la corrosi\u00f3n galv\u00e1nica que los cables elaborados a partir de distintos metales, de manera que tiene una vida \u00fatil mucho m\u00e1s larga, explica Sanzana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">Dada la capacidad del cable para seguir tenso sobre extensiones m\u00e1s largas, tambi\u00e9n podr\u00eda usarse para conectar nuevos proyectos como HidroAys\u00e9n al tiempo que reduce la necesidad de nuevas torres y minimiza su impacto ambiental<\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD; mso-bidi-font-family: \"Times New Roman\";' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">\u201cHabr\u00e1 muchas secciones de la l\u00ednea HidroAys\u00e9n en donde este tipo de cable es la mejor alternativa\u201d, afirma Wallach. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">Es m\u00e1s costoso que el cable convencional, pero considerando el costo de construir nuevas torres y de obtener permisos de derecho de paso de las comunidades locales es competitivo sobre una base de proyecto, argumenta Wallach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">Y, en algunos proyectos, el cable solo se necesita en ciertas secciones de una l\u00ednea, por ejemplo para cruzar un r\u00edo o una carretera<\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD; mso-bidi-font-family: \"Times New Roman\";' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">La demanda a nivel mundial por el cable<\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD; mso-bidi-font-family: \"Times New Roman\";' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">,<\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\"> que es producido en la planta Menomonie que 3M tiene en Wisconsin<\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD; mso-bidi-font-family: \"Times New Roman\";' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">,<\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\"> est\u00e1 creciendo y 3M planea duplicar su capacidad de producci\u00f3n en los pr\u00f3ximos 12 meses, afirma Wallach<\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD; mso-bidi-font-family: \"Times New Roman\";' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">Pero 3M no est\u00e1 descansando en los laureles. La compa\u00f1\u00eda, antes conocida como la Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company<\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD; mso-bidi-font-family: \"Times New Roman\";' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">,<\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\"> est\u00e1 concentrada fuertemente en la innovaci\u00f3n y el 32 por ciento de sus ventas provienen de productos desarrollados en los \u00faltimos cinco a\u00f1os. \u201cNuestro objetivo es que esta cifra crezca al 40 por ciento en los pr\u00f3ximos cinco a\u00f1os\u201d, sostiene Wallach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">La mayor parte de los nuevos productos el\u00e9ctricos son desarrollados en las oficinas centrales de la Divisi\u00f3n de Mercados El\u00e9ctricos de 3M<\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-CL;' lang=\"ES-CL\"> en <\/span><span style='line-height: 115%; font-family: \"Verdana\", \"sans-serif\"; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: ES-TRAD;' lang=\"ES-TRAD\">Austin, Texas, pero algunos productos han sido desarrollados en Chile espec\u00edficamente para la industria minera. Connecting new plants to Chile\u2019s main grid, the Central Interconnected System (SIC), means stringing high voltage cables between large transmission towers and obtaining right-of-way permits across waterways and protected areas. These lines also pose a safety hazard. As Chile\u2019s energy demand grows, higher power loads could cause them to heat up and sag, endangering vehicles, boats and animals passing below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">But the US-based firm 3M, which makes thousands of products including Post-it Notes and Scotch Tape, has the solution. It\u2019s called Aluminum Conductor Composite Reinforced (ACCR), a patented highly conductive wire that, according to 3M, more than doubles the transmission capacity of conventional cables of the same diameter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">Originally developed in the 1990s with the support of the US Department of Energy and tested at its Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the composite technology used in ACCR was designed to protect NASA\u2019s space shuttles from burning up as they re-enter the earth\u2019s atmosphere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">As a result, it is able to withstand temperatures up to about 210\u00b0C, compared to 75\u00b0C for traditional cable. The core, made up of 5,000 microfibers of aluminum oxide, is wrapped in a hard aluminum-zirconium alloy to guarantee its performance and durability under the high temperatures which occur on high voltage transmission lines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">\u201cThe cable\u2019s lightweight and heat resistance mean it can transport double the capacity over longer distances with less sag,\u201d says Pablo Wallach, country business manager at the Electrical &amp; Communications division of 3M Chile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">Brazil was the first South American country to adopt 3M\u2019s technology in 2008 and so far it has been used by six utilities there, mainly for line upgrades in congested urban areas as well as over nature areas and river crossings. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">\u201cIt\u2019s much easier and cost effective than building a tower in the middle of a river and has less environmental impact,\u201d explains Wallach. 3M recently received an order for a seventh project in Brazil and the technology has also been used for a river crossing in Argentina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">In Chile, 3M is negotiating with a local distributor to install a small section of line next year and, according to Wallach, more companies could soon be using the cable to replace old lines or, over longer distances, to connect new plants to the grid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">Most high voltage lines in Chile are designed to transport up to 220kV but, as energy demand grows, these lines will become overloaded, says Jose Sanzana, assistant marketing manager in 3M Chile\u2019s Electrical Markets Division.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">The capacity of many high voltage lines in Santiago will be reached in the next five to ten years, predicts Sanzana, but existing towers may not support the weight of an additional cable and building new towers to run a parallel line can be very costly if not impossible in urban areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">\u201cNobody wants a new tower in their backyard so the most cost effective alternative is increasing the capacity of the existing lines,\u201d says Sanzana. \u201cAnd because of its reliability, we believe that our technology is the best solution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">Another benefit for power distributors is its longevity. ACCR cable is made entirely of aluminum making it less susceptible to galvanic corrosion than wires made of different metals so it has a much longer useful life, explains Sanzana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">Given the wire\u2019s ability to remain taut over longer spans, it could also be used to connect new projects like <span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\">HidroAys\u00e9n<\/span> while reducing the need for new towers and minimizing their environmental impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">\u201cThere will be many sections of the <span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\">HidroAys\u00e9n<\/span> line where this type of cable is the best alternative,\u201d says Wallach. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">It is more expensive than conventional cable but considering the cost of building new towers and obtaining right-of-way permits from local communities it is competitive on a project basis, argues Wallach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">And, in some projects, the cable is only needed on certain sections of a line, for example in crossing a river or a highway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">Worldwide <span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\">demand for the cable, which is produced at 3M\u2019s Menomonie plant in Wisconsin, is growing and 3M plans to double its production capacity in the next 12 months, says Wallach<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">But 3M is not resting on its laurels. The company, formerly known as the <span style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;\">Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company<\/span>, is strongly focused on innovation and 32 percent of its sales come from products developed in the last five years. \u201cOur aim is for this to grow to 40 percent in the next five years,\u201d says Wallach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">Most new electrical products are developed at the headquarters of <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'; font-size: 8.5pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.3m.com\/3M\/en_US\/company-us\/all-3m-products\/~\/All-3M-Products\/Energy\/~\/All-3M-Products\/Energy\/~\/All-3M-Products\/Energy\/~\/All-3M-Products\/Energy\/?N=5002385+8709319+8711017+8742349+3294857497&amp;rt=r3&amp;3M-WSL=2&amp;WT.mc_id=www.3m.com\/electrical\" target=\"_blank\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; text-underline: none;\">3M\u2019s Electrical Markets Division<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'; font-size: 8.5pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\"> in Austin, Texas, but some products have been developed in Chile specifically for the mining industry.
