El t\u00e9rmino de mis tres meses de viaje se aproxima r\u00e1pidamente, tiempo que me ha llevado a tres fascinantes pa\u00edses: But\u00e1n, Nepal y Mongolia. \u00bfFue una \u201cexperiencia que me cambi\u00f3 la vida\u201d?  Es probable que est\u00e9 un poco viejo para eso, pero con toda certeza me dej\u00f3 impresionado. En los \u00faltimos 10 d\u00edas he estado en -o en los l\u00edmites- del desierto de Gobi, que ocupa parte importante de la zona sur de Mongolia, pa\u00eds mediterr\u00e1neo atascado inconvenientemente entre Rusia y China.<\/P>
\n

Hice un viaje en camello. Partimos temprano para cruzar las enormes dunas de arena, deteni\u00e9ndonos en un pozo abandonado para almorzar un picnic. Los camellos son lentos, feos, extremadamente inc\u00f3modos y malolientes con una tendencia a escupir pasto regurgitado a cualquiera que desaprueben y, con su largo cuello, esto incluye a sus pasajeros. Decid\u00ed caminar el tramo de la tarde y ped\u00ed al due\u00f1o de nuestros camellos, Sergat, que apuntara en la direcci\u00f3n a la que nos encamin\u00e1bamos. Habiendo identificado un \u201cobjetivo\u201d a mucha distancia, me puse mi bolso y part\u00ed sin mirar ni siquiera una vez hacia atr\u00e1s, suponiendo que los camellos me alcanzar\u00edan tarde o temprano.<\/P>
\n

Camin\u00e9 muy concentrado por m\u00e1s de tres horas en medio del calor (40\u00ba C) mientras las plantas de mis pies se quemaban. No vi a NADIE ni nada excepto una interminable hilera de huesos de animales emblanquecidos por el sol. Era asombrosamente bello, pero tambi\u00e9n me hizo sentir humano y vulnerable. Mis \u00fanicos compa\u00f1eros fueron lagartijas y un peque\u00f1o p\u00e1jaro ocasional. Ciertamente no quer\u00eda estar ah\u00ed afuera todo el d\u00eda y la noche.<\/P>
\n

Con el tiempo, vislumbr\u00e9 el Ger que era mi destino. La mayor\u00eda de los mongoles viven en Gers, que son estructuras de madera con forma de domo de unos cuatro metros de di\u00e1metro, las que se envuelven en fieltro de lana para mantener a los ocupantes templados en invierno y frescos en verano. Se pueden transportar de manera f\u00e1cil sobre unos pocos camellos o en cami\u00f3n, lo que es vital para su reubicaci\u00f3n en terrenos de pastoreo en un pa\u00eds que a\u00fan no tiene derechos privados de tierras.<\/P>
\n

Cuando por fin llegu\u00e9, cuatro perros grandes vinieron a la carga a defender la propiedad. Los perros son un problema en Mongolia: la mayor\u00eda tiene rabia y tienden a morder\u2026 Me salv\u00f3 una anciana de faz arrugada y color caoba, quien se acerc\u00f3 lanzando piedras y grit\u00e1ndole a los perros. Ella y su nieta eran todo sonrisas mientras me hac\u00edan pasar a su hogar. Supuse que nuestro anfitri\u00f3n estaba lejos cuidando el ganado y, seg\u00fan la verdadera tradici\u00f3n mongola, me sirvieron un bowl con leche caliente de cabra seguido por una mezcla de t\u00e9s, reques\u00f3n (el que se hab\u00eda estado secando en el techo) y pan. Todo estaba muy bien (\u00a1salvo el queso!) y lo com\u00ed con ganas. La conversaci\u00f3n era dif\u00edcil, pero nos las arreglamos con gestos y apuntando mucho con los dedos. El esposo lleg\u00f3 como es debido con su hijo y, mientras continu\u00e1bamos \u201cjugando a la m\u00edmica\u201d, me dieron un bowl con un l\u00edquido claro. \u00bfAgua? \u00bfNo! Alcohol destilado a partir de la leche de cabra. Estaba excelente\u2026 \u00a1Gracias a Dios por las cabras!<\/P>
\n

O\u00ed llegar a mis compa\u00f1eros y los vi sonre\u00edr al saber que yo iba varios bowls m\u00e1s adelante que ellos. Era Sergat: \u201cEste no es el Ger correcto…\u201d. \u201c\u00a1\u00bfQu\u00e9?! Pero ellos han sido tan generosos y amables con un completo desconocido\u201d. \u201cAh, eso es solo la manera n\u00f3made, hospitalidad corriente\u201d, respondi\u00f3. Me avergonc\u00e9, pero, como Sergat se sent\u00f3 para compartir los interminables ofrecimientos de esta pobre familia, me volv\u00ed a relajar.<\/P>
\n

Lleg\u00f3 el momento de irse y se intercambiaron cari\u00f1osas e incomprensibles despedidas. Pasamos esa noche con una familia igual de amable a unas de tres millas por los cerros, pero a ellos \u00a1\u00a1se les pag\u00f3 por recibirnos\u2026!!<\/P>
\n

La vida en Gobi es dura, pero las familias conf\u00edan los unos en los otros y la palabra \u201cextra\u00f1o\u201d no existe. Uno no pide permiso para entrar a un Ger; uno no necesita dar las gracias \u00a1ni siquiera necesita conversar! Uno simplemente llega, acepta lo que se le ofrece y se va. Se es muy bienvenido.<\/P>
\n

La Biblia nos ense\u00f1a a \u201camar al pr\u00f3jimo\u201d y fui testigo, en muchas ocasiones de una amabilidad hacia los extra\u00f1os que hab\u00eda olvidado que pod\u00eda existir en este r\u00e1pido mundo impulsado por el \u201cyo\u201d. Quiz\u00e1s simplemente deber\u00edamos comenzar por \u201cconoce a tu pr\u00f3jimo\u201d; no es f\u00e1cil mientras nos escondemos detr\u00e1s de muros y cercos el\u00e9ctricos con perros (sin rabia, suponemos\u2026).<\/P>
\n

Entonces, si usted vive cerca de m\u00ed, espere una visita en cualquier momento y tenga listo el t\u00e9. Si no tiene leche de cabra, la lecha de oveja o yegua estar\u00e1 bien. No necesitamos hablar, simplemente sentarnos, sonre\u00edr y hacer gestos. Me ir\u00e9 cuando est\u00e9 listo y usted sonreir\u00e1 amablemente\u2026<\/P>

I am fast approaching the end of three months of travel that has taken me to three fascinating countries – Bhutan, Nepal and Mongolia. Was it a \u201clife changing experience\u201d?  I am probably a bit long in the tooth for that, but I have most certainly been affected. For the past 10 days I have been in, or on the fringes of, the Gobi Desert, which consumes a substantial part of southern Mongolia, a landlocked country stuck inconveniently between Russia and China.<\/P>
\n

I went on a camel trek. We set off early to cross the massive sand dunes, stopping at an abandoned well to eat a picnic lunch. Camels are slow, ugly, extremely uncomfortable and smelly with a tendency to spit regurgitated grass at anyone they disapprove of and, with their long neck, this includes their passenger. I decided to walk the afternoon leg and asked our camel owner, Sergat, to point in the direction we were headed. Having identified an \u201cobjective\u201d far in the distance, I put on my pack and set off never once looking back, assuming the camels would catch up sooner or later.<\/P>
\n

I walked with great purpose for over three hours through the heat (40\u00ba C) while the soles of my feet burned. I saw NOONE and nothing except an endless trail of animal bones bleached white by the sun. It was stunningly beautiful but also made me feel human and vulnerable. My only companions were lizards and the occasional small bird. I certainly did not want to be out here all day and night.<\/P>
\n

Eventually, I sighted the Ger that was my destination. Most Mongolians live in Gers, which are dome-shaped wooden structures about four meters in diameter that are wrapped in wool felt to keep the occupants warm in winter and cool in summer. They can also be easily transported on a few camels or a truck, which is vital for relocating to grazing lands in a country that still has no private land rights.<\/P>
\n

When I finally arrived, four large dogs came charging to defend the property. Dogs are a problem in Mongolia: most have rabies and tend to bite\u2026 I was saved by an elderly woman with a wrinkled, mahogany face, who came out throwing stones and shouting at the dogs. She and her granddaughter were all smiles as they ushered me into their home. I assumed our host was away tending livestock and, in true Mongolian tradition, I was given a bowl of hot goat\u2019s milk followed by a mix of tea and curd cheese (which had been drying on the roof) and bread. It was all very good (except the cheese!) and I indulged. Conversation was tricky but we got by with gestures and much finger pointing.<\/P>
\n

The husband duly arrived with his son and, as we continued the \u201ccharades\u201d, I was given a bowl of clear liquid. Water? No! Alcohol distilled from goat\u2019s milk. It was excellent\u2026 thank goodness for goats!<\/P>
\n

I heard my companions arrive and smiled knowing I was several bowls ahead of them. It was Sergat: \u201cThis is not the right Ger…\u201d \u201cWhat?! But they have been so generous and kind to a complete stranger.\u201d \u201cOh, that is just the nomadic way, ordinary hospitality,\u201d he answered. I was embarrassed but, as Sergat sat to share in the never-ending offerings of this poor family, I relaxed again.<\/P>
\n

The time came to leave and fond, incomprehensible farewells were exchanged. We spent that night with an equally kind family about three miles into the hills, but they were being paid to have us\u2026!!<\/P>
\n

Life in the Gobi is tough but families rely on each other and the word \u201cstranger\u201d does not exist. You don\u2019t ask to go into a Ger; you don\u2019t need to say thank you and you don\u2019t even need to converse! You just arrive, accept what is offered and leave. You are very welcome.<\/P>
\n

The Good Book teaches us to \u201clove thy neighbor\u201d and I was witness, on many occasions, to a kindness towards strangers I had forgotten could exist in this fast-paced, \u201cme\u201d driven world. Perhaps we should simply begin with \u201cknow thy neighbor\u201d; not easy as we hide behind walls and electric fences with dogs (non-rabid, we suppose\u2026).<\/P>
\n

So, if you live near me, expect a visit at any time and have the tea ready. If you don\u2019t have goat\u2019s milk, sheep or mare\u2019s milk will do. We don\u2019t need to talk, just sit, smile and gesture. I will leave when I am ready and you will smile kindly\u2026<\/P>
