Pero el contratiempo se olvid\u00f3 r\u00e1pidamente a medida que los 30 y tantos emprendedores estadounidenses e inversionistas tra\u00eddos a Chile por Geeks on a Plane comenzaron a simpatizar con el Presidente Sebasti\u00e1n Pi\u00f1era.<\/P>
\n
Geeks on a Plane es un programa en virtud del cual emprendedores e inversionistas estadounidenses viajan a diferentes pa\u00edses para expandir la causa del emprendimiento y, con suerte, detectar sobre la marcha oportunidades de inversi\u00f3n interesantes.<\/P>
\n
Como destac\u00f3 uno de los miembros del grupo, el s\u00f3lo hecho de estar con el mandatario fue una se\u00f1al importante del inter\u00e9s del Gobierno en el emprendimiento -el d\u00eda anterior, hab\u00edan sido plantados por el alcalde de R\u00edo de Janeiro- e hizo todo lo correcto al hablar de disciplina y perseverancia \u2013por supuesto, la suerte es importante, sostuvo, pero es m\u00e1s probable tener suerte si uno se levanta temprano- y de querer cambiar al mundo. O, en otras palabras, lo que otro miembro del grupo describi\u00f3 como \u201cla esencia del emprendimiento\u201d.<\/P>

Desde ah\u00ed, escoltados por Endeavor -organizaci\u00f3n estadounidense sin fines de lucro que respalda el emprendimiento-, el grupo se dirigi\u00f3 a los buses que los llevar\u00edan en un viaje de dos horas camino al sur para almorzar, sostener reuniones y realizar actividades de networking en la Vi\u00f1a Casa Silva. Durante el viaje, los emprendedores chilenos \u2013arrodillados en el asiento delantero del bus porque, seg\u00fan se explic\u00f3, Chile es \u201cun pa\u00eds con normas\u201d y est\u00e1 prohibido estar de pie en buses interurbanos- mostraron sus proyectos a los geeks de visita. Y, a medida que sus historias comenzaron a desplegarse, tambi\u00e9n lo hicieron dos visiones diferentes del estado del emprendimiento en Chile.<\/P>

Seg\u00fan Dave McClure -socio fundador de 500 Startups, propulsor de firmas emergentes y fondo de capital semilla con sede en Silicon Valley, adem\u00e1s de creador de Geeks on a Plane-, Chile tiene la mayor cultura de emprendimiento de Am\u00e9rica Latina. \u201cLos inversionistas est\u00e1n m\u00e1s interesados en Brasil, porque el mercado es m\u00e1s grande, pero Chile tiene m\u00e1s esp\u00edritu de emprendimiento\u201d, afirm\u00f3.<\/P>

Esa visi\u00f3n fue compartida por Wenceslao Casares, el \u00edcono argentino del emprendimiento en Am\u00e9rica Latina, quien alcanz\u00f3 la fama en la d\u00e9cada de los 90 como el fundador del portal de servicios financieros Patagon. Como uno de los organizadores de la gira latinoamericana de Geeks on a Plane, confes\u00f3 que Chile hab\u00eda quedado en la mitad entre Brasil y Argentina, porque los inversionistas de capital de riesgo en el grupo de otro modo se lo habr\u00edan saltado. \u201cPero hubieran hecho mal\u201d, sostuvo.<\/P>

Durante la \u00faltima d\u00e9cada, Casares ha realizado varias inversiones en Chile y afirma que ha presenciado un cambio notable. \u201cNo hab\u00eda ning\u00fan capital de riesgo en Chile hace 10 a\u00f1os\u201d, recuerda, \u201cpero ahora hay m\u00e1s que en toda la regi\u00f3n junta, incluido Brasil, y eso realmente es un progreso r\u00e1pido\u201d.<\/P>

Chile es un pa\u00eds donde es sencillo iniciar un negocio, a\u00f1adi\u00f3 Pepijn van der Kroght, emprendedor holand\u00e9s que se asent\u00f3 en Chile, donde fund\u00f3 conjuntamente DIL Brands, empresa de embalaje y dise\u00f1o industrial que desde entonces se ha expandido a Argentina, Brasil y M\u00e9xico. \u201cEn mi experiencia, no hay ninguna complicaci\u00f3n en Chile\u201d, asever\u00f3, \u201cmientras que, en Brasil, la persona m\u00e1s importante es tu abogado experto en impuestos\u201d.<\/P>

\u00c9nfasis en los Cambios<\/STRONG><\/P> Sin embargo, los emprendedores chilenos no estaban tan entusiastas -\u201ces muy chileno quejarse de las cosas\u201d, coment\u00f3 Casares- pero por supuesto puede ser dif\u00edcil apreciar el progreso de un pa\u00eds mientras uno se enfrenta a los desaf\u00edos diarios que implica iniciar y sostener un negocio.<\/P> El peque\u00f1o mercado interno de Chile es por cierto una preocupaci\u00f3n para muchos emprendedores locales. Ello significa que, en muchas industrias a las que apuntan los proveedores de servicios, hay s\u00f3lo un pu\u00f1ado de actores, lo que dificulta entrar a un nuevo mercado, destac\u00f3 Max Grekin, socio fundador de SKM, empresa de e-learning.<\/P> Por supuesto, la respuesta es expandirse a otros pa\u00edses como lo ha hecho SKM. O usar a Chile como una plataforma como es el caso de Betazeta, firma con sede en Santiago que -como destac\u00f3 Leo Prieto, su cofundador y uno de los emprendedores m\u00e1s establecidos de Chile- opera la segunda red de blogs m\u00e1s visitada en el mundo de habla hispana.<\/P> \u201cChile est\u00e1 bien para recaudar montos de hasta, digamos, US$ 350.000\u201d, argument\u00f3 Sergio L\u00f3pez, emprendedor en tecnolog\u00eda con varias empresas emergentes a su nombre, \u201cpero, por encima de eso, las condiciones pueden ser perjudiciales para el desarrollo del negocio\u201d. Las quejas se concentran en que los fondos locales de capital de riesgo quieren demasiado en t\u00e9rminos de acciones preferentes y en el hecho de que, dado que s\u00f3lo hay tres fondos principales -Aurus, Austral y Copec UC- que hablan entre s\u00ed, los emprendedores tienen poca capacidad de negociar con uno por encima de otro.<\/P> No obstante, hubo consenso en cuanto a que las condiciones est\u00e1n mejorando de manera constante a medida que tanto los emprendedores como sus potenciales patrocinadores aprenden de la experiencia. Y en que, con los a\u00f1os, los Gobiernos de Chile han comenzado a entregar m\u00e1s y mejor respaldo al emprendimiento.<\/P> Una iniciativa clave lanzada el a\u00f1o pasado por el Gobierno del Presidente Pi\u00f1era es Start-Up Chile, programa dise\u00f1ado para persuadir a emprendedores extranjeros que se encuentran en las etapas iniciales de sus negocios a iniciar sus propuestas en Chile, con el atractivo de un subsidio de US$ 40.000. Pr\u00f3ximo a ser abierto tambi\u00e9n a emprendedores locales, en un principio fue visto con algo de escepticismo y considerado como un artilugio por sus cr\u00edticos.<\/P> \u201cEn un principio estuve esc\u00e9ptico\u201d, admiti\u00f3 Casares, \u201cpero mi opini\u00f3n ha cambiado\u201d. Casares ahora cree que la iniciativa podr\u00eda cumplir una funci\u00f3n \u00fatil en ayudar a conectar a los emprendedores chilenos con redes internacionales y a colocar al pa\u00eds en el mapa mundial del capital de riesgo.<\/P> La experiencia de Nathan Lustig, joven emprendedor de Wisconsin y un temprano participante del programa, es alentadora. Mientras estaba en Chile, no s\u00f3lo avanz\u00f3 en el desarrollo del negocio por el cual hab\u00eda sido elegido, sino que tambi\u00e9n se asoci\u00f3 con un chileno para lanzar una segunda empresa que espera expandir a Estados Unidos cuando vuelva a casa.<\/P> Sin embargo, quiz\u00e1s el desaf\u00edo individual m\u00e1s importante para Chile es no dormirse en los laureles. \u201cSi lo hace, (Chile) ser\u00e1 superado por Brasil con el tama\u00f1o de su mercado\u201d, advirti\u00f3 Casares, \u201cpero si persiste en sus actuales esfuerzos, se podr\u00eda convertir en un centro latinoamericano para el capital de riesgo\u201d.<\/P> O, como dijo el Presidente Pi\u00f1era a Geeks on a Plane durante su primera visita, fracasar en innovar significar\u00eda el estancamiento y, en el mundo de hoy, ello as su vez, significar\u00eda perder terreno en la carrera por la competitividad.<\/P> The day started at the La Moneda presidential palace with a disappointment when the promised breakfast turned out to be just coffee and a cookie. But that setback was quickly forgotten as the 30-odd US entrepreneurs and investors brought to Chile by Geeks on a Plane, a program under which they travel to different countries to further the cause of entrepreneurship and, hopefully, spot interesting investment opportunities on the way, warmed to President Sebasti\u00e1n Pi\u00f1era.<\/P> As one member of the group pointed out, just being with him was an important sign of his government\u2019s interest in entrepreneurship – the day before, they had been stood up by the mayor of R\u00edo de Janeiro – and he pushed all the right buttons, talking about discipline and perseverance – of course, he said, luck is important but you\u2019re more likely to get lucky if you get up early – and wanting to change the world. Or, in other words, what another member of the group described as \u201cthe essence of entrepreneurship\u201d.<\/P> From there, shepherded by Endeavor, a US-based non-profit organization that supports entrepreneurship, the group headed for the buses that would take them on the two-hour drive south to lunch, meetings and networking at the Casa Silva vineyard. During the journey, Chilean entrepreneurs – kneeling on the front seat of the bus because, it was explained, Chile is \u201ca country with rules\u201d and standing up is forbidden on intercity buses – pitched their projects to the visiting geeks. And, as their stories began to unfold, so too did two different visions of the state of entrepreneurship in Chile.<\/P> That view was echoed by Wenceslao Casares, the Argentine icon of entrepreneurship in Latin America who rose to fame in the 1990s as the founder of the Patagon financial services portal. One of the organizers of the Geeks on a Plane\u2019s Latin American tour, he confessed that Chile had been sandwiched between Brazil and Argentina because the venture capitalists in the group would otherwise have skipped it. \u201cBut they would have been wrong,\u201d he said.<\/P> Over the past decade, Casares has made several investments in Chile and says he has seen a remarkable change. \u201cThere wasn\u2019t any venture capital in Chile ten years ago,\u201d he recalled, \u201cbut now there\u2019s more than in the rest of the region combined, including Brazil, and that\u2019s really fast progress.\u201d<\/P> Chile is an easy country in which to start a business, added Pepijn van der Kroght, a Dutch entrepreneur who settled in Chile where he co-founded DIL Brands, a packaging and industrial design company that has since expanded to Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. \u201cIn my experience, there aren\u2019t any complications in Chile,\u201d he said, \u201cwhereas, in Brazil, your most important person is your tax lawyer.\u201d<\/P> Emphasis on challenges <\/STRONG><\/P> Chilean entrepreneurs, however, were not quite so enthusiastic – \u201cit\u2019s very Chilean to complain about things,\u201d commented Casares – but it can, of course, be difficult to appreciate a country\u2019s progress whilst grappling with the day-to-day challenges of starting and sustaining a business.<\/P> Chile\u2019s small domestic market is certainly a concern for many local entrepreneurs. It means that, in many industries targeted by service providers, there are only a handful of players, making it difficult to break into a new market, pointed out Max Grekin, founding partner of SKM, an e-learning company.<\/P> The answer, of course, is to expand to other countries as SKM has done. Or to use Chile as a platform as in the case of Betazeta, a Santiago-based company that, as Leo Prieto, its co-founder and one of Chile\u2019s most established entrepreneurs, pointed out, operates the second most-visited network of blogs in the Spanish-speaking world.<\/P> \u201cChile is fine for raising amounts of up to, say, US$350,000,\u201d argued Sergio L\u00f3pez, a technology entrepreneur with several start-ups to his name, \u201cbut, beyond that, the terms can be disruptive for the development of the business.\u201d The complaints focused on local venture capital funds wanting too much in terms of preferred shares and the fact that, because there are only three main funds – Aurus, Austral and Copec-UC – that all talk to each other, entrepreneurs have little leverage for playing one off against the other.<\/P> There was, however, consensus that conditions are improving constantly as both entrepreneurs and their potential backers learn from experience. And that, over the years, Chile\u2019s governments have begun to provide more and better support for entrepreneurship.<\/P> A key initiative launched last year by the Pi\u00f1era administration is Start-Up Chile, a program designed, with the bait of a US$40,000 grant, to persuade early-stage entrepreneurs from other countries to start their proposed businesses in Chile. Soon to be thrown open to home-grown entrepreneurs as well, it was originally regarded with some skepticism and, by its critics, as a gimmick.<\/P> \u201cI was initially skeptical,\u201d admitted Wenceslao Casares, \u201cbut my opinion has changed.\u201d He now believes the initiative may fulfill a useful function by helping to plug Chilean entrepreneurs into international networks and putting the country on the world venture capital map.<\/P> The experience of Nathan Lustig, a young entrepreneur from Wisconsin and an early participant in the program, is encouraging.
