Hay inversionistas estrat\u00e9gicos con liquidez, pero la chispa de la innovaci\u00f3n a menudo se extingue cuando una joven empresa emergente es adquirida y se aplican m\u00e9todos ya probados.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Para encender esa chispa, se requiere \u201ccapital inteligente\u201d de inversionistas experimentados en guiar a emprendedores para desarrollar empresas de alto impacto y con el dinero para respaldar el plan de negocios b\u00e1sico en una etapa inicial de desarrollo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Este tipo de financiamiento se conoce como \u201ccapital de riesgo\u201d. Si bien Chile tiene una naciente industria de capital de riesgo, es necesario que ella se conecte con inversionistas globales y gane experiencia en potenciar empresas de r\u00e1pido crecimiento.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Estados Unidos es sede de una de las mayores firmas de capital de riesgo a nivel mundial, con una larga historia en la promoci\u00f3n del emprendimiento y la innovaci\u00f3n. Aprovechar esta experiencia, y dar a los emprendedores una posibilidad de conocer a potenciales inversionistas, fue la meta de AmCham al traer a Chile en enero a un grupo de inversionistas l\u00edderes de capital de riesgo desde Estados Unidos.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">AmCham organiz\u00f3 la misi\u00f3n en alianza con el Ministerio de Econom\u00eda, la estatal Corporaci\u00f3n de Fomento de la Producci\u00f3n (CORFO) de Chile, el Departamento de Comercio de Estados Unidos, la ONG Endeavor Chile, la Asociaci\u00f3n Chilena de Administradoras de Fondos de Inversi\u00f3n (ACAFI) y el fondo local de capital de riesgo Austral Capital.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">La misi\u00f3n fue un complemento de la que AmCham realiz\u00f3 en California en septiembre de 2010 en paralelo a la visita oficial de Estado del Presidente Sebasti\u00e1n Pi\u00f1era. Durante esa visita, AmCham organiz\u00f3 una reuni\u00f3n privada entre inversionistas de capital de riesgo de Silicon Valley y el ministro de Econom\u00eda de Chile, Juan Andr\u00e9s Fontaine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">AmCham trabaj\u00f3 con Randy Mitchell, asesor senior para el Emprendimiento y el Capital de Riesgo del Departamento de Comercio de Estados Unidos y presidente del directorio del Grupo de Trabajo de la OCDE para el Emprendimiento. La C\u00e1mara cont\u00f3 adem\u00e1s con todo el respaldo de la Embajada de Estados Unidos en Santiago, incluido el del embajador Alejandro Wolff, quien celebr\u00f3 una recepci\u00f3n en su residencia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">La misi\u00f3n de tres d\u00edas, realizada entre el 5 y el 7 de enero, incluy\u00f3 a socios senior de Thomas H. Lee Partners, Pantheon Ventures Inc., Greenspring Associates, Mission Ventures y Volition Capital, todas importantes firmas en la industria de riesgo de Estados Unidos.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Los ejecutivos se reunieron con el ministro Fontaine y el vicepresidente ejecutivo de la CORFO, Hern\u00e1n Cheyre, para analizar c\u00f3mo integrar a Chile en la red global de capital de riesgo. Ellos participaron adem\u00e1s en dos seminarios. El primero, en el Hotel Ritz Carlton, que incluy\u00f3 un an\u00e1lisis de las tendencias de la industria y el rol del capital de riesgo en el desarrollo de compa\u00f1\u00edas de alto crecimiento. En \u00e9l, actores locales pudieron analizar oportunidades de negocio y eventuales sociedades.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">El segundo seminario, realizado en la Universidad Adolfo Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez, dio a los emprendedores la posibilidad de presentar sus proyectos y abri\u00f3 los ojos de los delegados a oportunidades de inversi\u00f3n potencialmente atractivas. Las presentaciones correspondieron al ministro Fontaine; Larry Cheng, socio gerente de Volition Capital; Susan Segal, directora general y presidenta ejecutivo del Consejo de las Am\u00e9ricas; y empresarios chilenos l\u00edderes, entre los que figuraron Fernando Fischmann de Crystal Lagoons.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Los ejecutivos se reunieron tambi\u00e9n con administradoras locales de fondos de pensi\u00f3n y empresas familiares para explorar el potencial de sociedades limitadas. La industria de capital de riesgo ofrece a los inversionistas chilenos una interesante opci\u00f3n para la diversificaci\u00f3n y para el desarrollo de una nueva base de conocimiento.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tambi\u00e9n hubo muchas oportunidades para reunirse con emprendedores chilenos en entornos informales incluido un almuerzo-mesa redonda con Andr\u00e9s Navarro, presidente y CEO de Sonda, y uno de los emprendedores m\u00e1s exitosos de Chile. Asimismo Salvador Said, presidente del directorio de Endeavor Chile, celebr\u00f3 un almuerzo privado en el que emprendedores tuvieron la oportunidad de interactuar con miembros de la delegaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Los resultados preliminares de la misi\u00f3n son positivos. Uno de los grupos de capital de riesgo est\u00e1 considerando establecer una oficina en Chile; otro, encontr\u00f3 un potencial socio local para invertir en una empresa emergente; y otros, est\u00e1n incluyendo a Chile en sus actuales planes de desarrollo, como una fuente tanto de financiamiento como de inversiones.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">En general, se lograron avances en integrar a Chile al mundo del capital de riesgo, creando as\u00ed un entorno m\u00e1s favorable para los emprendedores del pa\u00eds y tambi\u00e9n un puente en la brecha de financiamiento para la innovaci\u00f3n. AmCham agradece a todos sus socios por convertir la misi\u00f3n en un \u00e9xito.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Otra misi\u00f3n similar est\u00e1 prevista tentativamente para el 2012. Mientras tanto, AmCham est\u00e1 explorando la posibilidad de traer a Chile a fines del 2011 a inversionistas de capital de riesgo corporativo. Tales misiones son importantes para atraer inversi\u00f3n en innovaci\u00f3n, la que acelerar\u00e1 el crecimiento econ\u00f3mico de Chile, misi\u00f3n con la que la C\u00e1mara est\u00e1 firmemente comprometida.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>Kathleen C. Strategic investors with liquidity are present but the spark of innovation is often extinguished when a young start-up is taken over and proven methods are applied.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To kindle that spark, \u201csmart equity\u201d is needed from investors experienced in guiding entrepreneurs to build high-impact businesses and with the money to support the underlying business plan at an early stage of development.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This type of financing is known as \u201cventure capital\u201d. While Chile has a nascent venture capital industry, the industry needs to connect with global investors and gain experience in fostering fast-growth companies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The United States is home to the world\u2019s largest venture capital firms with a long history of promoting entrepreneurship and innovation. Harnessing this experience, and giving entrepreneurs a chance to meet potential investors, was AmCham\u2019s goal in bringing a group of leading U.S. venture capitalists to Chile in January.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">AmCham organized the mission in partnership with the Economy Ministry, the Chilean Economic Development Agency (CORFO), the U.S. Department of Commerce, NGO Endeavor Chile, the Chilean Association of Investment Funds (ACAFI), and local venture capital fund Austral Capital.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The mission was a follow-up to AmCham\u2019s September 2010 California mission in parallel with President Pi\u00f1era\u2019s official visit to the state. During that visit AmCham organized a private meeting between venture capitalists in Silicon Valley and Economy Minister Juan Andr\u00e9s Fontaine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">AmCham worked with Randy Mitchell, Senior Advisor for Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital at the U.S. Department of Commerce and Chairman of the OECD Working Party for Entrepreneurship, and received the full support of the U.S. Embassy in Santiago including U.S. Ambassador Alejandro Wolff who hosted a reception at his residence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The three-day mission, on January 5-7, included senior partners from Thomas H. Lee Partners, Pantheon Ventures Inc., Greenspring Associates, Mission Ventures, and Volition Capital \u2013 all major firms in the U.S. venture industry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The executives met with Minister Fontaine and the executive vice-president of CORFO, Hernan Cheyre, to discuss how to integrate Chile into the global venture capital network. They also participated in two seminars. The first, at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, included a discussion of industry trends and the role of venture capital in building high-growth companies. Here local players were able to discuss business opportunities and eventual partnerships.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The second seminar, held at Adolfo Iba\u00f1ez University, gave entrepreneurs a chance to present their projects and opened the delegates\u2019 eyes to potentially attractive investment opportunities. Presentations were given by Minister Fontaine; Larry Cheng, Managing Partner at Volition Capital; Susan Segal, President and CEO of the Council of the Americas; and leading Chilean entrepreneurs including Fernando Fischmann of Crystal Lagoons.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The executives also met with local pension fund managers and family offices to explore the potential for limited partnerships. The venture industry offers Chilean investors an interesting option for diversification and building a new knowledge base.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There was also plenty of opportunity to meet with Chilean entrepreneurs in informal settings including a roundtable luncheon with Andr\u00e9s Navarro, President and CEO of Sonda, and one of Chile\u2019s most successful entrepreneurs.&nbsp; Salvador Said, Chairman of Endeavor Chile, also hosted a private dinner at which entrepreneurs had the chance to interact with members of the delegation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Preliminary results of the mission are positive. One of the venture groups is considering establishing an office in Chile, another has found a potential local partner for investing in a start-up business and others are including Chile in their ongoing development plans, both as a source of funding and of investments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Overall, progress was made in integrating Chile with the venture capital world, thereby creating a more favorable environment for the country\u2019s entrepreneurs and bridging the financing gap for innovation. AmCham thanks all of its partners for making the mission such a success.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another similar mission is tentatively planned in 2012. In the meantime, AmCham is exploring the possibility of bringing corporate venture capitalists to Chile later in 2011. Such missions are important to attract investment in innovation that will accelerate Chile\u2019s economic growth &#8211; a mission to which the Chamber is firmly committed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>Kathleen C.
