No se puede negar en lo m\u00e1s m\u00ednimo el hecho de que el gobierno y varios expertos (muchos de la minera estatal Codelco) fueron extraordinariamente exitosos en el rescate de los ahora famos\u00edsimos 33. Esta fue una operaci\u00f3n seguida por varios millones de personas en todo el mundo. Chile se convirti\u00f3 en el centro mismo del universo por un breve lapso y el presidente Sebasti\u00e1n Pi\u00f1era y el ministro de Miner\u00eda Laurence Golborne vieron c\u00f3mo sus tasas de popularidad se disparaban tal como los precios del cobre…<\/p>\n

Sin embargo, es asombroso c\u00f3mo se puede subir s\u00f3lo para ser derribado como un pino envejecido en el bosque. La fama dura tanto como perdura nuestro inter\u00e9s, lo que puede extenderse por 15 minutos o menos. S\u00f3lo esta semana (la del 15 de noviembre) le pregunt\u00e9 a algunas personas bastante inteligentes -ciertamente no trabajo con genios y no estamos desarrollando tecnolog\u00eda 4G, pero mis colegas son bastante brillantes- \u201c\u00bfa cu\u00e1ntos de los 33 mineros puedes nombrar?\u201d Bueno, entre todos ellos s\u00f3lo nombraron CINCO y uno de ellos hab\u00eda estado en la portada del diario esa misma ma\u00f1ana: hab\u00eda corrido (caminado) la Marat\u00f3n de Nueva York e imitado a Elvis en el show de David Letterman.<\/p>\n

Forget Me Never 8Nunca me olvides), cantaba el Rey, pero parece que ya hemos olvidado a los 33 o quiz\u00e1s nunca los conocimos del todo. S\u00f3lo fuimos cautivados por el mejor Reality Show de la historia. Lo que tambi\u00e9n es fascinante es que tanto Pi\u00f1era como Golborne ahora est\u00e1n siendo atacados y no s\u00f3lo por la oposici\u00f3n; sus amigos y aliados pol\u00edticos los consideran como \u201cdemasiado populares\u201d y merecedores de una reprimenda. Bueno, una tasa de aprobaci\u00f3n del 78% (Golborne) es simplemente inaceptable y, por tanto, el \u00fanico camino a seguir es a la baja.<\/p>\n

Como estudiante de Chile en estos \u00faltimos 16 a\u00f1os, siempre me ha fascinado la forma en que la amable mano de ayuda que la gente le da a uno a medida que se escala la escalera del \u00e9xito, lo alcanza y golpea si uno se vuelve demasiado exitoso o si a uno se le suben los humos a la cabeza.<\/p>\n

Tome por ejemplo el reciente esc\u00e1ndalo en torno a la elecci\u00f3n del nuevo presidente de la Asociaci\u00f3n Nacional de F\u00fatbol Profesional de Chile, la ANFP, y la pendiente salida del muy exitoso entrenador de la selecci\u00f3n nacional: Don Marcelo Bielsa. Acusaciones de presi\u00f3n presidencial con el fin de asegurar que la elecci\u00f3n de cierto candidato copara los titulares. Puede que no haya ninguna evidencia de alguna mala pr\u00e1ctica o llamadas de medianoche desde un Blackberry, pero si tiras suficiente barro, siempre alguien termina sucio.<\/p>\n

\u00bfC\u00f3mo se sabe cuando el poderoso ha ca\u00eddo? \u00bfCu\u00e1ndo hay suficiente barro para cubrir la parte blanca de sus ojos? \u00bfCu\u00e1ndo se da un ba\u00f1o y aparece desnudo ante el mundo?<\/p>\n

Es dif\u00edcil mantenerse limpio cuando est\u00e1s en el tope del estercolero, pero parece que no falta los que quieren tirarlo. Entonces, como dice el proverbio, aquel que est\u00e9 libre de culpa, lance la primera…..<\/p>\n

Hablando de piedras, les encantar\u00e1 saber que el embarque que tra\u00eda mi Reactor Nuclear desde Ir\u00e1n (vea el art\u00edculo Independencia Energ\u00e9tica para Tontos, bUSiness Chile, octubre del 2010) fue secuestrado por piratas somal\u00edes, \u00a1que est\u00e1n exigiendo rescate por el barco! Esto deber\u00eda terminar en muchas noches sin dormir para los negociadores de la ONU. Afortunadamente para m\u00ed, el pago es contra una nota de cr\u00e9dito que se honrar\u00e1 tras la entrega en terreno (CIF) en Santiago. De modo que el banco tiene mi dinero (no hay nada nuevo en eso, \u00a1\u00bfno?!) y a\u00fan tengo mi jard\u00edn, al menos por ahora.<\/p>\n

Despu\u00e9s de la publicaci\u00f3n de ese art\u00edculo, en el que anunci\u00e9 las novedades de mi pr\u00f3xima independencia energ\u00e9tica utilizando en parte energ\u00eda generada por la bicicleta, un amable lector me hizo saber de un error de terminolog\u00eda; \u00a1un lector muy inteligente! Po lo tanto, lectores espero que puedan encontrar los errores de esta semana y participen por el premio especial de bUSiness Chile.<\/p>\n

Sigo ilustrado, pero esquivando el barro y esti\u00e9rcol, y manteniendo una tasa de aprobaci\u00f3n de apenas el 50,1%. No obstante, si caigo bajo el 50% me despiden, lo que realmente apesta si se considera cuanto gano…<\/p>\n

There is absolutely no denying the fact that the government and various experts (many from the state mining company Codelco) were extraordinarily successful in rescuing the now very famous 33.  This was an operation watched by many millions of people from all around the world. Chile became the very center of the universe for a short time and President Sebastian Pi\u00f1era and Mining Minister Laurence Golborne saw their popularity stock soar like copper prices…<\/P>
\n

However, it is amazing how high you can rise only to be felled like a mature pine tree in the forest. Fame lasts as long as our interest does, which might be 15 minutes or less. Just this week (November 15) I asked some fairly intelligent individuals \u2013 I certainly don\u2019t work with geniuses and we are not producing 4G technology, but my co-workers are pretty bright \u2013 \u201chow many of the 33 miners can you name?\u201d  Well, between them they named just FIVE and one had been on the front page that very morning \u2013 he ran (walked) the New York Marathon and impersonated Elvis on Letterman.<\/P>

Forget Me Never, sang the King, but it seems we\u2019ve already forgotten the 33 or perhaps we never really knew them anyway. We were just captivated by the best Reality Show ever. What is also fascinating is that both Pi\u00f1era and Golborne are now under attack, and not only from the Opposition; their friends and political allies see them as \u201ctoo popular\u201d and in need of a dressing down. Well, a 78% approval rating (Golborne) is simply untenable and so the only place to go is down.<\/P>
\n

As a student of Chile these past 16 years, I have always been fascinated by the way the kindly helping hand people give you as you climb the ladder of success will reach out and slap you if you get too successful or too big for your boots.<\/P>
\n

Take the recent scandal surrounding the election of the new president of Chile\u2019s professional football association, the ANFP, and the pending departure of the very successful head coach of the national team \u2013 Don Marcelo Bielsa. Accusations of presidential pressure used to ensure the election of a certain candidate have filled the headlines. There may be absolutely no evidence of any wrongdoing or midnight calls from a Blackberry, but if you sling enough mud someone always ends up getting dirty.<\/P>
\n

How do you know when the mighty have fallen? When there is enough mud to cover up the whites of their eyes? When they take a bath and appear naked before the world?<\/P>
\n

It\u2019s difficult to stay clean when you\u2019re at the top of the dunghill, but there seems to be no shortage of those willing to throw it. Then again, as the proverb goes, let him that is without fault cast the first…..<\/P>
\n

Speaking of stones, you will be amused to know that the ship bringing my Nuclear Reactor from Iran has been hijacked by Somali Pirates who are holding the shipment for ransom! This should result in many sleepless nights for UN negotiators. Luckily for me payment is against a Letter of Credit to be honored upon delivery to site (CIF) in Santiago. So, the bank has my money (nothing new in that is there?!) and I still have my garden \u2013 at least for now.<\/P>

After the publication of that article, in which I announced the news of my forthcoming energy independence partly using bicycle power, a kind reader spotted a dreadful mistake where the term peddle was used but pedal was actually intended; one very sharp reader! Thus, I hope you \u201cEnglish as a second language types\u201d can spot this week\u2019s deliberate mistake and right in for the bUSiness Chile special prize.<\/P>
\n

I remain, enlightened but dodging the mud and the dung and maintaining an approval rating of just 50.1%. However, if I drop below 50% I get fired, which really sucks when you consider how much I get paid…<\/P>
