While Chile’s neighbors were developing a new generation of concertgoers, Chileans had to be home early. Even after the country opened up, the scarcity of venues didn’t help matters.

It’s tough to pinpoint one change that tipped the scales, but the construction of Santiago’s Movistar Arena in 2006 was significant. There are now around 15 concert venues in the city capable of holding several thousand fans and a smattering of smaller clubs, but the 16,000-capacity Movistar Arena often lands the biggest acts.

But getting a ticket can be expensive. It used to be that an artist launched a concert tour shortly after completing a new album. Musicians still make albums, but with the accessibility of music online the profitability of CDs has taken a hit, which has made concerts a financial necessity for some artists.

And with the U.S. and European economies sagging, ticket sales have been hurt in those markets. But before signing a contract, promoters like Fenix Entertainment have to work a variety of factors into their calculations and have their finger on the pulse of the public. For example, if an agent says Bob Dylan is available in the first quarter of 2011, they must be prepared to make a pitch.

“There are a number of variables,” explains Bursztyn. “For example how many weeks will the artist be in the region? Will there be more than one show and will they perform in more than one city?”

Promoters rarely stick their necks out for a “one shot” concert, as single appearance shows are referred to in industry parlance. In any given year attendance might rise or fall by 50,000 or 100,000, but there are other factors that will likely limit further growth.

One is competition from neighboring countries. The internationalization of the concert circuit has not only benefited Chile – Peru is also attracting more acts, aided by an economic boom in recent years.

To put things into perspective, Fenix Entertainment recently brought the American rock band The Killers through Lima, Santiago and Buenos Aires. The Lima and Buenos Aires shows each drew 50,000, while just 8,000 showed up to the Santiago concert.

Part of the reason for the high turnout in Peru is the lack of options for fans. In Argentina, the concert scene is significantly more developed, but the real difference is the size of the country – Argentina has twice the population of Chile so if The Killers wanted to do two shows there, they could and would probably sell them both out.

But even with higher ticket sales, concerts are a limited format, says Entel’s Romero.
