\u00a1Qu\u00e9 a\u00f1o! \u00a1Y a\u00fan no termina! Pensamos que el 2009 hab\u00eda sido suficientemente malo con la crisis financiera mundial, a la que Chile sobrevivi\u00f3 notablemente bien gracias a las s\u00f3lidas pol\u00edticas fiscales. Entonces, el 27 de febrero, Chile fue azotado por uno de los mayores terremotos de los que se tenga registro, seguido por un maremoto que llen\u00f3 de miseria a aquellos ya azolados por el terremoto y a quienes no; incluso a aquellos que se encontraban en la isla Robinson Crusoe. Las historias de sobrevivencia fueron asombrosas y la respuesta nacional fue ejemplar. La solidaridad prevaleci\u00f3 y Chile surgi\u00f3 de estos desastres m\u00e1s unido que nunca antes.<\/p>\n

Pero la tierra bajo nuestros pies contin\u00faa poniendo a prueba el temple del car\u00e1cter nacional de Chile. Despu\u00e9s de m\u00e1s de un mes atrapados a 700 metros bajo tierra, los 33 mineros de la mina San Jos\u00e9 est\u00e1n \u00a1VIVOS! La resistencia de estos hombres ha captado la atenci\u00f3n del mundo y les ha valido un lugar en una lista de h\u00e9roes que incluye al color\u00edn libertador de Chile Bernardo O’Higgins, el valiente Capit\u00e1n Arturo Prat y muchos otros que de manera regular ponen su bienestar en peligro por sus vecinos: carabineros, soldados, bomberos, param\u00e9dicos, sacerdotes, transe\u00fantes y la lista contin\u00faa.<\/p>\n

De los \u00faltimos 200 a\u00f1os, este a\u00f1o ha sido uno de los m\u00e1s dif\u00edciles que Chile haya enfrentado jam\u00e1s, pero incluso en esta “hora de oscuridad” la promesa para el futuro es extraordinariamente positiva. De modo que, \u00bfpor qu\u00e9 esto es divertido? Bueno, no lo es, pero -en momentos en que una serie de pa\u00edses latinoamericanos est\u00e1n celebrando sus propios bicentenarios- Chile es sin duda alguna un lugar extremadamente bueno donde estar, dadas las alternativas…<\/p>\n

No soy chileno de nacimiento, pero s\u00ed creo en Chile, voto en Chile y pago impuestos (lo menos que se pueda…) en Chile. La Sra. Eneldo es chilena de nacimiento, nuestros tres Eneldi\u00f1os son chilenos y nuestra \u00fanica Eneldi\u00f1ita es 100% chilena; en realidad es un cuarto de casi cualquier cosa, pero a\u00fan as\u00ed es 100% chilena.<\/p>\n

Ya sea que uno adopt\u00f3 a Chile como su hogar o que creci\u00f3 en el pa\u00eds, el Bicentenario es una oportunidad maravillosa para enterrar las disputas pol\u00edticas y unirse detr\u00e1s de una bandera, un himno y un deseo com\u00fan de un Chile mejor, m\u00e1s amable y con igualdad de oportunidades para todos. Esto puede sonar como un manifiesto de partido, pero es una ocasi\u00f3n trascendental. \u00bfCu\u00e1ndo tendremos una mejor oportunidad para darnos un apret\u00f3n de manos con nuestros vecinos por primera vez? \u00bfCu\u00e1ndo haremos que los mapuches se sientan realmente bienvenidos en su propio pa\u00eds? \u00bfCu\u00e1ndo creer\u00e1 un ni\u00f1o o ni\u00f1a que \u00e9l o ella recibir\u00e1 una educaci\u00f3n de clase mundial? \u00bfCu\u00e1ndo pondremos las palabras sustentable, renovable, reciclaje, aire puro y calles seguras en nuestro vocabulario del d\u00eda a d\u00eda?<\/p>\n

Si enterramos c\u00e1psulas del tiempo ahora para que se abran en 100 a\u00f1os, \u00bfc\u00f3mo se volver\u00edan a mirarnos nuestros descendientes? \u00bfC\u00f3mo nos juzgar\u00e1 la historia en comparaci\u00f3n con nuestros vecinos y con pa\u00edses de similar tama\u00f1o? \u00bfPodemos decir que hemos hecho suficiente? \u00a1Nunca! \u00bfLo hemos hecho bien? No lo hemos hecho de mala forma, pero… \u00bfPodemos hacerlo mejor? \u00a1De todas maneras! Creo que somos capaces de mucho, mucho m\u00e1s si nos fijamos metas ambiciosas pero alcanzables. Deber\u00edamos seguir la direcci\u00f3n de pa\u00edses como Noruega, Finlandia, Nueva Zelanda, Costa Rica, Corea del Sur, Irlanda e incluso Vietnam, y aprender de sus \u00e9xitos y fracasos<\/p>\n

Del lado negativo (o \u00bfpositivo?) del progreso, el suyo pronto podr\u00eda volverse obsoleto. Para el 2110, este art\u00edculo ser\u00e1 escrito por un robot en apenas tres minutos exactos (no en ocho horas de nerviosa desdicha…), editado por un s\u00faper computador que pesar\u00e1 menos de un kilo en Mumbai y publicado por AmCham.influenciaypotenciamundial.com en una “nube” para que el mundo lo lea en \u00a1Chino Mandar\u00edn<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

Estuve ah\u00ed, lo hice, pero a\u00fan no tengo la polera….<\/p>\n

What a year \u2013 and it ain\u2019t over yet! We thought 2009 was bad enough with the worldwide financial crisis, which Chile survived remarkably well thanks to solid fiscal policies. Then, on February 27th, Chile was clobbered by one of the largest earthquakes on record, followed by a tsunami which poured misery on those already hit by the quake and those who were not; even those on Robinson Crusoe Island. The survival stories were remarkable and the national response was exemplary. Solidarity prevailed and Chile has emerged more united than ever before.<\/P>
\n

But the earth under our feet continues to test the mettle of Chile\u2019s national character. After more than a month trapped 700 meters underground, 33 miners at the San Jos\u00e9 mine are ALIVE! The resilience of these men has captured the attention of the world and earned them a place on a list of heroes that includes Chile\u2019s red-haired liberator Bernardo O\u2019Higgins, the valiant Captain Arturo Prat, and many others who regularly put their own wellbeing on the line for their neighbors: police officers, soldiers, firefighters, paramedics, priests, passersby and the list goes on.<\/P>
\n

Of the last 200 years, this year has been one of the most difficult Chile has ever faced, but even in its \u201chour of darkness\u201d the promise for the future is extraordinarily positive. So, why is this funny? Well it\u2019s not but, at a time when a number of Latin American countries are celebrating their own bicentenaries, Chile is by all accounts an extremely good place to be, given the alternatives\u2026<\/P>
\n

I am not Chilean by birth but I do believe in Chile, I vote in Chile and I pay taxes (as little as possible\u2026) in Chile. Mrs. Eneldo is Chilean by birth, our three Eneldi\u00f1os are Chilean and our one Eneldi\u00f1ita is 100% Chilean; actually she is one quarter almost everything but still 100% Chilean.<\/P>
\n

Whether you\u2019ve adopted Chile as your home or grown up here, the Bicentenary is a wonderful opportunity to bury the political hatchet and unite behind one flag, one anthem and a common desire for a better, kinder Chile with equal opportunities for all. This may say sound like a Party Manifesto but it is a momentous occasion. When will we have a better opportunity to shake the hand of our neighbor for the first time? To make the Mapuches feel truly welcome in their own country? For a child to believe he or she will receive a world class education? To put the words sustainable, renewable, recycle, clean air and safe streets into our everyday vocabulary?<\/P>
\n

If we buried time capsules now to be opened in 100 years, how would our descendants look back on us? How will history judge us compared to our neighbors and countries of similar size? Can we say we have done enough? Never! Have we done well? We haven\u2019t done badly, but\u2026 Can we do better? Absolutely! I believe we are capable of much, much more if we set ambitious yet attainable goals. We should take our lead from countries like Norway, Finland, New Zealand, Costa Rica, South Korea, Ireland and even Vietnam, learning from their successes and failures.<\/P>
\n

On the downside (or upside?) of progress, yours truly could soon be made obsolete. By 2110 this article will be written by a robot in just three minutes flat (not eight hours of fretted misery\u2026), edited by a super computer weighing less and a kilogram located in Mumbai and published by AmCham.worldpowerandinfluence.com on a \u201ccloud\u201d for all the world to read \u2013 in Mandarin!<\/STRONG><\/P>
