Este mes Estados Unidos celebra su aniversario n\u00b0 234 junto con los principios sobre los cuales el pa\u00eds fue fundado: la libertad, la igualdad de todas las personas y el derecho a perseguir sus sue\u00f1os.<\/P>

Tambi\u00e9n queremos celebrar la fortaleza de la relaci\u00f3n bilateral entre Chile y Estados Unidos que se basa en esos mismos valores comunes.<\/P>

En septiembre, Chile celebrar\u00e1 su propio bicentenario desde la independencia y, en parte gracias a su excelente relaci\u00f3n con Estados Unidos, est\u00e1 en v\u00edas de convertirse en un pa\u00eds desarrollado para el 2018, meta que destac\u00f3 el Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores Alfredo Moreno en un evento de AmCham realizado en junio y que deline\u00f3 el presidente Pi\u00f1era en su mensaje a la naci\u00f3n del 21 de mayo.<\/P>

Para conseguirlo, Chile necesitar\u00e1 aprovechar sus ventajas comparativas en \u00e1reas como la astronom\u00eda, que se analiza en el art\u00edculo \u201cExplorando el Universo desde Chile\u201d. Los cielos despejados del norte de Chile entregan la ventaja competitiva que trajo como resultado que la Uni\u00f3n Europea seleccionara al pa\u00eds para la construcci\u00f3n del que ser\u00e1 el telescopio m\u00e1s grande del mundo. Esta gran inversi\u00f3n, combinada con otras en observatorios ya existentes, es un incentivo para generar una base de conocimientos de clase mundial en astronom\u00eda que conduzca a innovaciones tecnol\u00f3gicas, m\u00e1s empleos de alta calidad y una mayor aproximaci\u00f3n a esta ciencia de parte de las universidades.<\/P>

La miner\u00eda es otra \u00e1rea en donde Chile ha tenido desde hace tiempo una ventaja comparativa. El Reportaje Principal de este mes \u201cInvirtiendo en el Futuro de Codelco\u201d se concentra en la necesidad de que la cupr\u00edfera estatal de Chile mejore la eficiencia y haga inversiones que incrementar\u00e1n de manera significativa la productividad durante la pr\u00f3xima d\u00e9cada. La gran cantidad de inversiones que se necesitan, unos US$ 15.000 millones durante cinco a\u00f1os, deber\u00eda crear muchas oportunidades para las empresas locales de servicio y sus trabajadores. Dada la posici\u00f3n de liderazgo mundial que ocupa Codelco en la industria del cobre, podemos esperar que este programa de inversi\u00f3n conduzca a muchas innovaciones bajo la etiqueta \u201checho en Chile\u201d.<\/P>

En cualquier direcci\u00f3n en la que se mire, ya sea hacia arriba en el cielo o hacia abajo en la tierra, a sus enormes reservas de cobre, las necesidades de Chile ofrecen nuevas oportunidades para una relaci\u00f3n a\u00fan m\u00e1s profunda con Estados Unidos a nivel intergubernamental, educacional y empresarial. La energ\u00eda, la ciencia, la educaci\u00f3n y el emprendimiento son poderosos motores para el crecimiento en ambos pa\u00edses, en especial para Chile que puede aprovechar el conocimiento t\u00e9cnico y la experiencia de uno de sus m\u00e1s importantes aliados.<\/P>

Por supuesto, esta relaci\u00f3n se sustenta en muchas personas que trabajan de manera incansable para fortalecer los lazos bilaterales. Este mes nos despedimos de una de ellas, el embajador de Estados Unidos Paul Simons, quien cumpli\u00f3 su misi\u00f3n en Chile habiendo hecho importantes contribuciones para desarrollar las oportunidades de cooperaci\u00f3n, en particular en las \u00e1reas de reconstrucci\u00f3n y energ\u00eda.<\/P>

Al mismo tiempo, damos la bienvenida al nuevo representante de Chile ante Estados Unidos, el embajador Arturo Fermandois, quien es entrevistado en esta edici\u00f3n (revise la entrevista en la secci\u00f3n Noticias de esta edici\u00f3n). Fermandois viaja a Washington con un renovado compromiso para lograr una relaci\u00f3n a\u00fan m\u00e1s s\u00f3lida con Estados Unidos concentr\u00e1ndose en \u00e1reas como educaci\u00f3n y energ\u00eda, al tiempo que trabaja para hacer que las oportunidades generadas por esta relaci\u00f3n est\u00e9n disponibles para la poblaci\u00f3n general.<\/P>

AmCham est\u00e1 comprometida para seguir entregando un s\u00f3lido respaldo a este nuevo cap\u00edtulo de la relaci\u00f3n entre nuestros dos pa\u00edses. Esto incluye la organizaci\u00f3n de una importante misi\u00f3n comercial a California este a\u00f1o, la que se concentrar\u00e1 en el fortalecimiento de los lazos en materia de innovaci\u00f3n e industrias basadas en el conocimiento. <\/P>

This month the United States celebrates its 234th birthday along with the principles on which the country was founded – freedom, the equality of all people and the right to pursue their dreams. <\/P>

We also celebrate the strength of the bilateral relationship between Chile and the United States that is based on those same shared values.<\/P>
\n
In September, Chile will mark its own 200th anniversary since independence and, thanks in part to its excellent relationship with the United States, it is on track to becoming a developed country by 2018, a goal highlighted by Foreign Minister Alfredo Moreno at an AmCham event in June and outlined by President Pi\u00f1era in his state-of-the-union address in May. <\/P>

To get there, Chile will need to harness its comparative advantages in areas like astronomy, which are discussed in the article \u201cExploring the Universe from Chile.\u201d Northern Chile\u2019s clear skies provide the competitive advantage that resulted in the European Union selecting the country for the construction of what will be the world\u2019s largest telescope. This large investment, combined with investments in existing observatories, is an incentive to generate a world-class knowledgebase in astronomy leading to technological innovations, more high quality jobs and a greater focus on this science in universities.<\/P>

Mining is another area where Chile has long held a comparative advantage. This month\u2019s Cover Story \u201cPaying back Codelco\u201d focuses on the need for Chile\u2019s state-owned copper company to improve efficiency and make investments that will significantly improve productivity over the next decade. The large amount of investment needed, some US$15 billion over five years, should create many opportunities for local service companies and their workers. Given Codelco\u2019s global leadership position in the copper industry, we can expect its investment program to lead to many innovations with the label \u201cmade in Chile.\u201d<\/P>

Any direction you look, whether up at the sky or down to earth at its huge copper reserves, Chile\u2019s needs offer new opportunities for an even deeper relationship with the United States at the inter-governmental, educational and business levels. Energy, science, education and entrepreneurship are powerful motors for growth in both countries, especially for Chile which can draw on the know-how and experience of one of its most important allies.<\/P>

Of course, this relationship is sustained by many individuals who work tirelessly to strengthen bilateral bonds. This month we bid farewell to one such individual, U.S. Ambassador Paul Simons, who has completed his assignment in Chile having made important contributions to building opportunities for cooperation, particularly in the areas of reconstruction and energy. <\/P>

At the same time, we welcome a new Chilean Ambassador to the United States, Ambassador Arturo Fermandois, who is interviewed in this issue. He goes to Washington with a renewed commitment to achieving an even stronger relationship with the U.S. focusing on areas like education and energy, while making the opportunities of this relationship available to the broader population.<\/P>

AmCham is committed to continuing to strongly support this new chapter in the relationship between our two countries. This includes the organization of an important trade mission to California later this year which will focus on strengthening ties in knowledge-based industries and innovation. <\/P>
