In addition to the top award, winners were selected in the categories of innovation, community involvement and public partnership.

According to AmCham’s president, Ricardo García, the awards were created to highlight the important benefits for companies that take Corporate Social Responsibility seriously, not just as charity but as actions towards long-term sustainability and a productive relationship with their communities.

The 2009 Good Corporate Citizen Award went to Minera Spence, a mine operated by BHP Billiton, for its social responsibility program (PADL by its Spanish initials) to support local development in the Sierra Gorda community where the mine is located in northern Chile.

Chile’s economic growth has been largely driven by mining activity and many companies in this sector are involved in giving back to their communities through social programs. Spence’s PADL program has invested around US$ 1 million in 147 local initiatives in Sierra Gorda since 2005. The program is designed to promote the economic development of the community, strengthen local organizations and train people in new skills.

Community members and small businesses can apply for co-financing of projects in education, sports, social and cultural development. The program is administered by a board of company representatives and elected members of the community. In 2009, the program provided US$ 91,270 for education programs; US$ 273,000 for entrepreneurs and small businesses; and US$ 5,386 for youth football schools.

“The award is an incentive because there are many people who work on these Corporate Social Responsibility programs. Childhood obesity grew from 7% in 1987 to 22% in 2008 and has become one of the main challenges facing public health in Chile.

Tresmontes Luccheti partnered with University of Chile’s Food Nutrition and technology Institute (INTA in Spanish) to develop a model for fighting the obesity epidemic in schools. As a result of this partnership, the firm developed a pilot project in three public schools in the Casablanca municipality.

The pilot program has been a success, increasing the number of hours of physical education in schools from two to four hours per week and reducing, in three years, the rate of child obesity by 50%.

Today, the model developed by Tresmontes is being implemented by the Health Ministry in 1,000 schools throughout the country. The company is also working directly with municipalities and health officials to ensure the program continues in schools with monitoring by INTA.

“We are very proud of this award because it recognizes a program that has been integrated as part of public heath policy, which means it will continue in the future,” said Felipe Lira, Tresmontes’ Corporate Affairs Manager.

Mentoring Young Talent

The multinational energy and petrochemicals firm Shell won the Community Involvement Award for its mentoring program that trains young people between 20 and 28 years of age to create a business plan and start their own businesses.

During a four month period, the budding entrepreneurs participate in training courses with each assigned to a volunteer mentor with professional business experience.
