\nCuando me sent\u00e9 para escribir la columna de este mes, tuve un deseo repentino de escribir algo extremadamente profundo; algo que los hiciera decir \u201cCaramba, \u00a1eso es fant\u00e1stico!\u201d <\/p>\n
Entonces record\u00e9 que s\u00f3lo se me pide ser gracioso. A lo mejor \u00bfpodr\u00eda \u201cadoptar la s\u00e1tira en busca de la verdad…\u201d? Pero, despu\u00e9s de mucha lucha interna de car\u00e1cter intelectual, termin\u00e9 con esto:<\/p>\n
Desde hace mucho tiempo he tenido un problema con el bienestar canino en Chile y me entristece la cantidad de \u201cmascotas\u201d detr\u00e1s de rejas cuya \u00fanica raz\u00f3n de ser es hacer crujir sus dientes e intentar morder mis piernas mientras paso caminando. Algunas veces, en mi barrio, la cacofon\u00eda de aullidos y ladridos compite con las mejores hinchadas de f\u00fatbol en malicia y compromiso. <\/p>\n
Siempre quise levantar mi voz sobre este tema y la oportunidad se present\u00f3 sola. El problema no son los perros, \u00a1son los due\u00f1os! <\/p>\n
Tuve un enfrentamiento con un grupo de perros el otro d\u00eda y, de hecho, me dio mucho miedo. Estaba en el sector Par\u00eds-Londres del centro de Santiago un d\u00eda bien entrada la tarde cuando me encontr\u00e9 con este grupo \u201cpaseando\u201d entre mi auto y yo. Al principio, no me detuvo a pensar nada al respecto y segu\u00ed caminando con calma, hasta que una r\u00e1faga de viento llev\u00f3 mi olor (por lo general bastante agradable, seg\u00fan me han dicho) hacia los perros, lo que gener\u00f3 mucho m\u00e1s inter\u00e9s de lo que hab\u00eda considerado.<\/p>\n
Estaba sobrepasado en n\u00famero y algunos de ellos eran grandes. NO, no puedo decir cu\u00e1ntos eran machos y cu\u00e1ntas hembras, pero s\u00ed les puedo decir cu\u00e1n r\u00e1pido pas\u00e9 de la calma al miedo y luego al p\u00e1nico: \u00a1me tom\u00f3 como cinco segundos! No estaba seguro si ellos intentaban hacer perritos conmigo, comerme o s\u00f3lo incomodarme un poco. Ten\u00eda que tomar una decisi\u00f3n: mantener mi postura (algo valiente, pero est\u00fapido), alejarme caminando lentamente o darme la vuelta y correr como animal.<\/p>\n
Mantuve mi postura por un nanosegundo, congelado por la indecisi\u00f3n, antes de dar la vuelta y correr tan r\u00e1pido como pude. \u00a1Algo realmente tonto! No hay nada que le guste m\u00e1s a una manada de perros que una persecuci\u00f3n. Alcanc\u00e9 a llegar a una peque\u00f1a tienda y entr\u00e9 como un loco: lo que result\u00f3 bastante evidente para las dem\u00e1s personas en el lugar! Les expliqu\u00e9 el aprieto en que me encontraba s\u00f3lo para que me dijeran que eso pasa todo el d\u00eda, todos los d\u00edas.<\/p>\n
\u201cEntonces, \u00bfpor qu\u00e9 las autoridades no hacen algo al respecto?\u201d, pregunt\u00e9. \u201cPorque muchos de los perros pertenecen a residentes locales y son ellos los que deber\u00edan lidiar con el problema!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201c\u00bfC\u00f3mo as\u00ed?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201c\u00bfLe gustar\u00eda estar encerrado en un departamento de 8 de la ma\u00f1ana a 8 de la noche con agua s\u00f3lo de la taza del inodoro para mantenerse? \u00a1En serio…!\u201d<\/p>\n
Un amable hombre sali\u00f3 de la tienda; me escond\u00ed detr\u00e1s de \u00e9l, con la cabeza afuera, pero el cuerpo bien adentro.
\n\u201cMire, \u00bfve cu\u00e1ntos tienen collares?\u201d<\/p>\n
Y entonces me qued\u00f3 todo muy claro. Esta pandilla era s\u00f3lo un ejemplo canino de la vida humana en la calle. Los adultos se hab\u00edan ido a trabajar y hab\u00edan dejado a los j\u00f3venes (o, en este caso, a los perros) vagando hasta la cena. \u00a1Qu\u00e9 miedo, pero qu\u00e9 cierto! Desde mi seguro punto de visi\u00f3n, pod\u00eda ver nueve perros, la mayor\u00eda con collares y la mayor\u00eda de razas reconocibles, no quiltros. \u00a1Hooligans caninos!<\/p>\n
Esper\u00e9 como 15 minutos hasta que la \u201cpandilla\u201d se hubiera alejado y entonces me desplac\u00e9 lentamente hasta las crecientes sombras de mi auto: las cuatro ruedas estaban llenas de pip\u00ed.<\/p>\n
D\u00edganme, por favor, \u00bfqu\u00e9 mente corrupta dejar\u00eda a Lassie y sus amigos vagar por las calles en mala compa\u00f1\u00eda s\u00f3lo para asustar a simp\u00e1ticos transe\u00fantes como YO?<\/p>\n

But, after much intellectual infighting, I settled on the following:<\/p>\n I have long had a problem with canine welfare in Chile and am saddened by the number of \u201cpets\u201d behind fences whose only reason for being is to gnash their teeth and snap at my legs as I walk by. Sometimes, in my neighborhood, the cacophony of howling and barking rivals the best football crowds for venom and commitment. <\/p>\n I have always wanted to raise my voice on the issue and the opportunity presented itself. The problem is not the dogs, it is the owners! <\/p>\n I had a run-in with a pack of hounds the other day and it was very scary indeed. I was in the Paris-Londres sector of downtown Santiago late one afternoon when I came upon this pack \u201changing out\u201d between me and my car. At first, I thought nothing of it and walked calmly on – until a gust of wind carried my scent (usually quite pleasant, I am told) towards the dogs, inviting far more interest than I had bargained for.<\/p>\n I was outnumbered and some were large. NO, I cannot tell you the dog to bitch ratio but I can tell you how quickly I went from calm through fear to panic – about five seconds! I wasn\u2019t sure if they intended to breed me, eat me or just rough me up a bit. I had to make a choice: stand my ground (brave but stupid), walk slowly away or turn and run like a deer.<\/p>\n I stood my ground for a nanosecond, frozen by indecision, before turning and running as fast as I could. Really dumb! There\u2019s nothing a pack of dogs likes more than a chase. I made it as far as a small store and entered like a man gone mad – which seemed pretty evident to the other people present! I explained my predicament only to be told that it happens all day, every day.<\/p>\n \u201cSo why don\u2019t the authorities do something about it?\u201d I asked. \u201cBecause many of the dogs belong to local residents and they should be dealing with the problem!\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHow come?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWould you like to be locked up in an apartment from 8am to 8pm with only water from the toilet bowl to sustain you? Seriously…!\u201d<\/p>\n One gallant man stepped outside; I hid behind him, head outside but body well inside. And there it was, as clear as a bell in my head. This gang was just a canine example of human life on the street. The adults have gone off to work leaving the teens (or, in this case, the dogs) to wander until dinner. Pretty scary but true! >From my secure viewing point, I could now see nine dogs, most with collars and most recognizable breeds, not mongrels.
