\nEl primer desayuno de la AmCham de este a\u00f1o se llev\u00f3 a cabo apenas d\u00edas despu\u00e9s desde la investidura del presidente Barack Obama. Por ello, dif\u00edcilmente fue una sorpresa que la oradora invitada Kellie Meiman, miembro de McLarty Associates -firma de asesor\u00eda estrat\u00e9gica encabezada por Thomas \u201cMack\u201d McLarty, jefe de gabinete del presidente Clinton y su enviado especial para Am\u00e9rica- a\u00fan mantuviera fresca la emoci\u00f3n de ese evento.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo puedo describir con suficiente precisi\u00f3n la naturaleza hist\u00f3rica de este momento y no s\u00f3lo porque Obama es el primer presidente afroamericano de Estados Unidos\u201d, sostuvo en el desayuno. \u201cEl hecho a\u00fan m\u00e1s importante fue la multitud de dos millones de personas -congel\u00e1ndose, por cierto- que se reuni\u00f3 frente al Capitolio; en todo el tiempo que llevo en Washington y en pol\u00edtica, creo que es lo m\u00e1s heterog\u00e9neo que he visto nunca\u201d. <\/p>\n
Las dificultades econ\u00f3micas que enfrenta el nuevo Gobierno son -por cierto- enormes: \u201cLa primera medida que tiene que tomar Estados Unidos es\u2026 volver a poner en marcha a su econom\u00eda\u201d, se\u00f1al\u00f3 Meiman. Sus desaf\u00edos externos -desde el Medio Oriente hasta la India y Pakist\u00e1n- tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1n extremadamente claros, destac\u00f3. <\/p>\n
De igual modo, la pol\u00edtica comercial es un desaf\u00edo, a\u00f1adi\u00f3 Meiman, quien preside la C\u00e1mara Chileno Americana (CamCham) en Washington. \u201cEn Estados Unidos, nuestro consenso interno sobre el comercio est\u00e1 sumamente re\u00f1ido y eso es algo que necesitamos abordar con urgencia\u201d, a\u00f1adi\u00f3.<\/p>\n
No obstante, Meiman dijo a los miembros de la AmCham que de todas maneras est\u00e1 confiada en que el nuevo Gobierno volver\u00e1 a confirmar la credibilidad internacional de Estados Unidos, luego de lo que calific\u00f3 como a\u00f1os dif\u00edciles. Obama hizo campa\u00f1a como un multilaterialista que trabajar\u00eda fuertemente para restituir la credibilidad del pa\u00eds y las primeras se\u00f1ales han sido positivas, destac\u00f3. <\/p>\n
\u201cTanto el presidente Obama como la secretaria Clinton han dejado en claro que, a\u00fan en el caso de pa\u00edses que son m\u00e1s desafiantes y que quiz\u00e1s son considerados como adversarios de Estados Unidos, el di\u00e1logo ser\u00e1 la primera opci\u00f3n del Gobierno\u201d, subray\u00f3.<\/p>\n
Am\u00e9rica Latina, en general, y Chile -en particular- encontrar\u00e1n en Estados Unidos a \u201cun muy buen socio y muy responsable\u201d, predijo. Es cierto que en lo que respecta a las propuestas, el enfoque inicial del nuevo Gobierno estuvo en otras regiones -donde \u201chay disputas reales en progreso\u201d-, admiti\u00f3, pero la continuidad de corto plazo se hab\u00eda asegurado con su decisi\u00f3n de mantener por el momento a Thomas Shannon como secretario de Estado Adjunto para Asuntos del Hemisferio Occidental.<\/p>\n
Seg\u00fan Meiman, la pr\u00f3xima Cumbre de las Am\u00e9ricas, que se realizar\u00e1 en abril en Trinidad y Tobago, servir\u00e1 como un oportuno foro en donde establecer el tono de las relaciones regionales. \u201cEsa es una ocasi\u00f3n en la que Chile y la presidenta Bachelet tendr\u00e1n una muy buena oportunidad de mostrar su liderazgo\u201d, asever\u00f3 a los asistentes al desayuno.

\u201cI can\u2019t state enough the historic nature of this moment, and not just because Obama is the first African American president of the United States,\u201d she told the breakfast. \u201cThe even more important story was the crowd of two million people – freezing, by the way – who gathered in the front of the Capitol; in all my time in Washington and in politics, I think it\u2019s the most diverse I\u2019ve ever seen.\u201d <\/p>\n
The economic difficulties faced by the new administration are, of course, enormous – \u201cthe first step the U.S. has to take is\u2026 to get its economy back on track,\u201d said Meiman. Its external challenges – from the Middle East to India and Pakistan – are abundantly clear too, she noted. <\/p>\n
Trade policy is a challenge as well, added Meiman, who chairs the Chilean American Chamber (CamCham) in Washington. \u201cIn the U.S., our domestic consensus on trade is badly frayed and that\u2019s something we desperately need to address,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
But Meiman told AmCham members that she is, nonetheless, confident the new administration will reassert the international credibility of the U.S., after what she described as difficult years. Obama ran as a multilaterialist who would work hard to rebuild credibility, and the early signs have been positive, she noted. <\/p>\n
\u201cBoth President Obama and Secretary Clinton have made clear that, even in the case of countries that are more challenging and perhaps regarded as adversaries of the U.S., talking will be the administration\u2019s first option,\u201d she pointed out.<\/p>\n
Latin America in general and Chile in particular will find the U.S. \u201ca very good and responsible partner\u201d, she predicted. It\u2019s true, she admitted, that as regards nominations, the new administration\u2019s initial focus was on other regions – where \u201cthere are real fires burning\u201d – but short-term continuity had been assured by its decision for the time being to keep on Thomas Shannon as assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere affairs.<\/p>\n
According to Meiman, the next Summit of the Americas, due to be held in Trinidad and Tobago in April, will serve as a timely forum in which to set the tone of regional relationships. \u201cThat\u2019s a place where Chile and President Bachelet will have a really good opportunity to show leadership,\u201d she told the breakfast.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
