He will be sworn into office on Tuesday 20 January, 2009, thus becoming not just the 44th President of the United States but the first African American to hold this office.

Many have compared him to John F. Kennedy, who came to the Presidency on a wave of hope and at a time when the United States was at war in Vietnam. Obama comes to the Presidency with a message of “new hope” in the midst of the biggest economic recession since the 1930s (which has yet to bottom out…) and with the United States at war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Kennedy became president in 1961 when he was just four months shy of his 47th birthday. Obama was born in August 1961, less than seven months into the Kennedy administration, and he will be 47 years and five months old when he is sworn into office. Both studied at Harvard.

But here the comparisons should probably stop. Kennedy was born white and privileged, a member of a very prominent Boston, Massachusetts dynasty. Obama was born in Honolulu to a white mother and Kenyan father; his election was celebrated widely in Kenya. Their origins could not be more different but their message of hope sounds similar.

So where does all this leave us here in Chile? Well, we do care about Obama’s promises. If the United States and the European Union are in recession, then it is only a matter of time before the pressures are felt here in Chile. The downside of a global market is that we cannot opt out when the going gets tough. We export commodities as well as a few services and “value added” products and when our client nations start to back off buying, the economy will be headed south – and fast. We export tourism but in a world where people are being laid off by the thousands, the good leader will postpone his planned family holiday in Patagonia in favor of a week in the Adirondacks.

Chile will not fully realize the scale of this crisis until March 2009, which at least means we can enjoy Christmas and the summer holidays! Why March? Well, one thing I have learned from my years in Chile is that life here is a cycle within a cycle. Where the U.S. has Thanksgiving in late autumn, a wintry Christmas and a summer vacation in July or August, in Chile we bundle all this into a compact two-month period. Between December 20 and March 1, we have it all: an orgy of shopping, company parties, Christmas and time away from work.

In Chile, February is the forgotten month. While the industrialized and recession-trapped northern hemisphere is surviving winter by burning the furniture to keep warm and eating military rations, we will be basking on some of the world’s most beautiful beaches (alright the water is cold…), sipping good Chilean wines and ignoring the plight of the world…until March. And that is what credit cards are for – to shield us from the realities of life.

So, as we approach the festive season, please make sure your various credit cards are fully unloaded, allowing you to sail calmly through troubled waters with maximum canvas, enjoying the thrills of Christmas and summer to the full, regardless of the costs involved. After all, it is only plastic money! Added to this, the probability of your bank going belly up is very high indeed which means you will probably not have to pay off any of your accumulated debt come March!!

Live, love and spend on credit, for tomorrow we will start again. Obama has arrived to solve all our problems.

We wish you a Plastic Christmas,

Santiago Eneldo
(Born to live wild and with high credit rating on all credit cards – well, until March 31, 2009… santiagoeneldo@yahoo.com)
