Es valent\u00eda, una cualidad tan excepcional como fina.<\/P> Este es el legado de Ricardo Claro Vald\u00e9s \u2013l\u00edder empresarial, emprendedor, \u00e1vido lector y fil\u00e1ntropo con una fe s\u00f3lida, un profundo amor por su pa\u00eds, pasi\u00f3n por las artes y amor por su familia- quien falleci\u00f3 el mes pasado a los 74 a\u00f1os de edad.<\/P> Los visionarios son s\u00f3lo so\u00f1adores si no tienen valor, el valor para tomar decisiones dif\u00edciles, el valor para escoger caminos que no son aceptados tradicionalmente y el valor de enfrentar los distintos desaf\u00edos que aparecen a lo largo del camino.<\/P> Ricardo Claro fue un visionario para Chile en momentos en que el pa\u00eds necesitaba m\u00e1s que nunca esta visi\u00f3n. Desarroll\u00f3 la que hoy en d\u00eda es las m\u00e1s globalizada de todas las empresas chilenas, Compa\u00f1\u00eda Sudamericana de Vapores (CSAV). Mostr\u00f3 a una naci\u00f3n c\u00f3mo sacar partido de su mayor oportunidad econ\u00f3mica y ciertamente de uno de sus mayores desaf\u00edos durante el \u00faltimo siglo: tener el valor para abrir sus fronteras al comercio y la competencia.<\/P> No escogi\u00f3 un camino sencillo. La industria naviera es una de las m\u00e1s competitivas del planeta. No logr\u00f3 el \u00e9xito sobre la base de grandes riquezas, sino m\u00e1s bien sobre la base del trabajo arduo, la disciplina, la visi\u00f3n y la capacidad para asumir riesgos bien calculados y bien informados. Forj\u00f3 un emblema para su grupo, un muy respetado l\u00edder mundial de la industria naviera, y un emblema para su pa\u00eds.<\/P> A lo largo del camino, Ricardo Claro tambi\u00e9n desarroll\u00f3 una red de conexiones sin precedentes para anteriores l\u00edderes de negocios de la historia de Chile. Y de manera m\u00e1s importante, us\u00f3 esta red para mejorar y profundizar la conexi\u00f3n de Chile con el mundo para relaciones entre pa\u00edses, as\u00ed como entre empresas, construidas por gente, y Ricardo Claro represent\u00f3 lo mejor de Chile. Trabaj\u00f3 de manera diligente en el respaldo del Tratado de Libre Comercio con Estados Unidos as\u00ed como tambi\u00e9n para fortalecer las relaciones con China, India y muchos otros pa\u00edses.<\/P> Pero sus aportes fueron a\u00fan m\u00e1s lejos. Forj\u00f3 amistad y entendimiento alrededor del mundo para transmitir la rica cultura de Chile al mundo y, al mismo tiempo, para traer lo mejor de la cultura mundial a Chile. Dio a Chile la oportunidad de conocer las mejores piezas de \u00f3pera, danza y m\u00fasica, las que trajo al Teatro Municipal. Siempre le estaremos agradecidos por los muchos y hermosos libros de las artes visuales y escritas de Chile que patrocin\u00f3. M\u00e1s importante, le agradecemos por el espl\u00e9ndido tributo a la historia de Chile plasmado en el Museo Andino que representar\u00e1 por siempre y maravillosamente la identidad del pa\u00eds.<\/P> Todos estos logros fueron para el beneficio de todo el pueblo de Chile. Mostr\u00f3 una profunda preocupaci\u00f3n por sus trabajadores al capacitarlos y convertirlos en los m\u00e1s competitivos de la industria. El mes pasado tambi\u00e9n fue testigo de la gran cantidad de organizaciones de beneficencia que apoy\u00f3 silenciosamente durante a\u00f1os a medida que estas hac\u00edan p\u00fablico su aprecio por la vida de un gran chileno. Esto es verdadera responsabilidad social, realizada de manera efectiva, responsable y humilde.<\/P> AmCham reconoci\u00f3 a Ricardo Claro en el 2005 con su mayor distinci\u00f3n, el Premio al Fomento del Libre Comercio. Apreciamos y respetamos su contribuci\u00f3n a Chile y a la inserci\u00f3n de Chile en el mundo. Queremos rendirle honores nuevamente por el valor que es la marca de su legado. Chile honra a un ciudadano querido y el mundo honra a un amado chileno.<\/P> This is the legacy of Ricardo Claro Vald\u00e9s – a business leader, entrepreneur, avid reader and philanthropist with a strong faith, profound love for his country, passion for the arts and love of family – who died last month at the age of 74.<\/p>\n Visionaries are only dreamers in the absence of courage – courage to make tough decisions, courage to choose paths which are not traditionally accepted, and courage to face the many challenges along the road. <\/p>\n Ricardo Claro was a visionary for Chile at a time when the country needed this vision most. He built what is today the most globalized of all Chilean businesses, Compa\u00f1\u00eda Sudamericana de Vapores (CSAV). He showed a nation how to take advantage of its greatest economic opportunity and certainly one of its greatest challenges over the last century – having the courage to open its borders to trade and competition. <\/p>\n He did not choose an easy path. Shipping is one of the most competitive industries on earth. He did not achieve success on the foundation of great riches but rather on the basis of hard work, discipline, vision and the ability to take well-calculated and well-informed risks. He built a flagship for his group, a highly respected global leader in shipping, and a flagship for his country. <\/p>\n Along the road, Ricardo Claro also built a network of connections unsurpassed by previous business leaders in Chile\u2019s history. More importantly, he used this network to enhance and deepen Chile\u2019s connection to the world for relationships between countries, as well as between businesses, are built by people and Ricardo Claro represented the best of Chile. He worked diligently in support of the Free Trade Agreement with the United States as well as to strengthen relationships with China, India and many other countries.<\/p>\n But his contributions went even deeper. He constructed friendships and understanding around the world as he worked to transmit the rich culture of Chile to the world and, at the same time, to bring the best of global culture to Chile. He brought Chile the opportunity to know the greatest works of opera, dance and music at the Teatro Municipal. We will always be thankful for the many and beautiful books involving Chile\u2019s visual and written arts which he patronized. Most importantly, we are thankful for the magnificent tribute to Chile\u2019s history embodied in the Museo Andino which will forever beautifully represent the country\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n All of these achievements were for the benefit of all of the people of Chile. He showed deep concern for his workers by training them and making them the most competitive in the industry. Last month we also saw the large number of charitable organizations he silently supported over the years as they made public their appreciation for the life of a great Chilean. This is true social responsibility – effectively, responsibly, and humbly completed. <\/p>\n AmCham recognized Ricardo Claro with its highest honor – its Free Trade Award – in 2005. We appreciate and respect his contribution to Chile and to Chile\u2019s insertion in the world. We wish to honor him again for the courage which is the hallmark of his legacy.
