As well as growing in Mexico, Brazil and Uruguay, it has opened new offices in Panama and, in March, Chile where it is looking to advise both high net worth individuals and institutional investors.

In this interview, Richard Diego, country manager and head of the new office in Santiago, talks to bUSiness CHILE about some of the do’s and don’ts of investing in today’s volatile and perplexing markets.

What is RBC telling clients about the outlook for international financial markets?

We actually think that the period of maximum vulnerability has passed, at least in North America. Pressure from the housing crisis is subsiding and we’re starting to see the effects of the liquidity injected by central banks and of interest rate cuts. At the same time, banks have been re-building their balance sheets. Everyone talks about the write-offs they have had to make; what no-one is saying is that they’ve been able to raise new capital equivalent to around 70% of those losses. Of course, there are risks and investors need to be careful…

Inflation?

Yes, that’s the big risk, but there’s a silver lining. When you take out food and oil prices, core inflation is pretty well-controlled and slower global growth should reduce demand and pressure on commodity prices. Also, we think that, with the risk of protracted recession in the U.S. abating, the Federal Reserve’s interest rate cuts are probably over and inflation will move up its list of priorities.

So there are interesting investment opportunities out there?

There’s bad news out there but, certainly, there’s value too, providing you have the patience to wait to reap it. There are assets trading at multiples that are too low. Corporate profits, outside the financial services industry, seem solid and RBC estimates that equities in every major market except Canada are currently trading at well below fair values and, therefore, should start to recover as the economic environment improves.

What about Latin American equity markets? Are you recommending clients to invest in the region?/I>

Yes, there are certain markets that have done very well; Brazil is doing extremely well and we’re going to be distributing locally-registered mutual funds denominated in reais.

Peru?

Peru’s doing very well too. All the countries that have a commodity base are doing well; however, if you believe that the international economy is going to soften, then it would also be reasonable to think that some of those commodity prices will come down.

Should Chileans be investing in their own stock market? /I>

Chile’s an interesting market but it’s true that price/earnings ratios are tending to run quite high so if you’re looking for value, you may be at a point in the cycle where there’s less value and more cost. The second element is what’s going to happen to the dollar and, since last November, RBC started to think it would strengthen and – guess what – that’s exactly what’s happened.

Are there opportunities as well in fixed-income?

Bond yields still indicate that there’s a possibility of recession in the U.S. and keeping them at their current level would require a much softer economy than we expect so it’s not a good environment for bonds. In other words, it’s better to wait while fixed-income markets adjust to the improved economic outlook and the associated risk premiums. In what we’re recommending for clients, the asset mix continues to overweight on equities – to take advantage of attractive valuations relative to improving economic conditions – and underweight on bonds.

Bottom line – what sort of returns can investors expect?

One of the first things any investment adviser needs to do is to set realistic expectations. The boom in international markets in the late 1990s spoiled investors into thinking they were going to get 20% or 30% returns every year. The reality is that, if you look back over a long period at what you can reasonably expect, it’s somewhere between 8% and 10%. In 1999, for example, returns were somewhere in the order of 31%, the average between 1997 and 2006 was 10% and the lowest return in 2001 was negative 12%. So there’s been a sea shift and one of the first things that needs to be in the head of an investor is that there is no return that doesn’t have risk and the higher the return you aspire to, the greater the volatility and risk you’re going to get.

But there are ways to reduce risk?

Certainly, and the way to do that is to diversify and have non-complementary assets classes that move in different directions. The proof of the pudding is in a study of 82 large U.S. pension funds by Ibbotson Associates, an asset allocation consultancy company; it concluded that it’s the mix of assets – and not either the selection of the securities or market timing – that gives you your result. Asset allocation signified 91.5% of the reason why they had a return. Only 2% was market timing – most people think they can market-time but they don’t have a clue – and security selection was 5%.

So trying to play the market is a mistake?

You have to review and rebalance your portfolio to keep your investment plan on track but you need to focus on the long term, not try to catch the tops and bottoms. If you’re in and out, the probability of missing the best trading days is higher and the potential for it negatively affecting your return is very high. That underscores the importance of being disciplined and having a long-term approach.

One last question – RBC Wealth Management is now in seven Latin American countries, but why Chile? It’s a small market… /I>

We feel we can offer the finest professional advice from a truly global perspective and our policy is to be in significant markets. Chile is a significant market because, notwithstanding its size as a country, its financial services industry is not a small market and, with the level of institutions and clear rules of the game and from a compliance and safety of doing business perspective, we feel very comfortable here.

Putting a new spin on its long history in Latin America, Canada’s largest financial institution, the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), is expanding the activities of its wealth management division in the region.
