No, sólo aire caliente …

That’s correct, this magazine and the organization behind it are promoting People Power. However, this is not a political statement (something AmCham avoids like a plague) so much as a Home Management Manual on how to survive 2008 without energy.

We are in crisis, yet again, and there are plenty of people to blame – the Government (of course), Argentina, Bolivia, La Niña, surging energy demand without the corresponding investment, etc. – but we want to be part of the solution and, as 2008 is going to be tough on all of us, here are ten ways to provide Power for the People and save buckets of money.

1. Your water bill includes the cost of “waste”; in other words, you pay for your water twice – coming in and going out. So, save the water that comes in and use it again. This requires a small amount of re-engineering and acceptance that bathroom and kitchen water will not be as clean as before.

2. Whenever possible go to the bathroom when visiting the neighbors, at school or at the office. At home, turn off the water to the toilets and “flush” once a day, using a bucket with retained shower water. Use the remaining retained shower water for the garden. The kitchen outflow, which contains much valuable organic matter, is best for plants and shrubs but may cause bad odor on the grass.

3. As real grass dies, replace it with astro turf. It is easy to lay down and will maintain its color even as the dogs continue to leave friendly deposits on it.

4. Modify cooking habits to decrease water usage. Pasta cooked in white wine is quite excellent and there is certainly no shortage of affordable wines. Cleaning your teeth in a fruity sauvignon blanc leaves delightful tingles on the palate that last all night.

5. Wear all clothes at least three times before washing – by hand in the retained shower water, of course. Don’t forget to apply a little more deodorant than usual.

6. Start a vegetable garden. Where, you ask? It matters not because much of your existing garden is going to die anyway. If you should use dog deposits to fertilize, the produce should be well washed in a good Merlot before consumption.

7. Now that your home uses only VEESLBs (very expensive energy saving light bulbs) you have limited choices and the best is to keep the lights turned OFF. Candles provide light and (albeit limited) heat. Paraffin heaters are fine – if you can afford the paraffin – and cooking can be done as if you were camping: techniques perfected this summer for risotto and salmon cooked on the butane stove just need to be used all winter. Entertain less or tell your guests to bring their own stove.

8. The 8-cylinder, 24-valve, gas-guzzling 4×4 has to go. You cannot look your friends in the eyes and say you are doing your bit for the nation if you DRIVE to work or school and, worse, if you drive alone. At least put three cardboard figures in the other seats. Now, and don’t laugh – use Transantiago. Stop laughing! This much maligned form of transport is very modern, clean and economical. O.K., you get to work late but this will be one excuse the Boss will actually believe!

9. The Multifunctional Bicycle. Every home has at least two and, as well as getting you to your Transantiago connection – let’s face it, most of you travel “down hill” to the office – the other great use of the “bici” is to power a small home generator. This is Nana Power. As you have one (two?) live-in maids who will now have less to do, take the wheels off your most efficient bike and fix it to a frame, attaching the rear axle to a small generator. The nanas (maids) take turns – two-hour shifts are recommended – to provide morning and evening power for the living room, one computer, one TV, one iPod, eight cell phones and the alarm system. You may want to read your nana’s contract and consult a (cheap – ha!) lawyer first.

10. Finally, unplug EVERYTHING and then plug back only those devices you cannot live without. No dishwasher, no blender, no electric toothbrush…. Remember, more devices means more hours peddling for the nanas.

Good luck! You will need it! I could recommend a solar panel but this technology doesn’t seem to have been invented in Chile yet. A small, personal Nuclear Power Plant? Unlikely to get approval from the neighbors. Reconciliation with Bolivia and its vast gas reserves? Not in a hundred years, apparently. More gas from Argentina? No, just hot air…

I remain, camped out in the garden protecting my seedlings from birds, cats and a jealous neighbor who quite fancies my brussel sprouts.

Santiago Eneldo
(Other energy-saving recommendations to santiagoeneldo@yahoo.com)

That’s correct, this magazine and the organization behind it are promoting People Power.
