§ Mateo Budinich, presidente, AmCham
§ Craig A. The 29 projects presented for prize, which is now in its fifth year, are just one sign of the importance that Chilean businesses – and not only large companies but also small firms – attach to CSR.

As AmCham president, Mateo Budinich, pointed out during the presentation of the prizes, consumers abroad increasingly scrutinize the products they buy, enquiring how they were made and at what social and environmental cost. As a result, responsible business practices are key for the competitiveness of an export-driven economy like Chile while, at home too, good relations with the community can add value to a business

“CSR is a structured method that guides companies in growing their social capital,” said Budinich, “and it strengthens them in the markets to which they export and in which they produce.”

The importance of companies’ relations with their neighbors was highlighted by one of the winners of the AmCham prize. Through a Community Social Responsibility Program, Central Restaurantes-Aramark seeks to promote the sustainable development of communities in the areas of Chile where it provides catering and facility management services.

Because the company’s customers include mining operations in remote areas of northern Chile, many of these communities are indigenous and respect for their culture and values is a guiding principle of the program, says Claudia Vidal, corporate manager for community relations. As well as the use of local suppliers and the priority given to hiring members of nearby communities, the program, launched in 2004, also aims to preserve the communities’ culinary traditions by including typical dishes in its menus.

Another of this year’s winners – a scholarship program for secondary and higher education operated by Fundación Pehuén – also benefits indigenous communities, in this case in southern Chile. Through the program, the foundation – created in 1995 by the Endesa electricity company as part of the construction of its Ralco hydroelectric dam – finances 75% of the cost of the education of young people from six Pehuenche communities in the area around the plant.

The involvement of company employees is also a key feature of many CSR programs. In the long term, this helps to build deeper-rooted understanding between different segments of society, with their diverse interests, but can also have shorter-term spin-offs.

According to Vidal, Central Restaurantes-Aramark’s program has, for example, created awareness of the impact of refuse on surrounding communities and the importance of keeping it to a minimum. Indeed, users of the company’s canteens are encouraged to serve themselves only the portions they actually need, leaving food that is not consumed for donation to charitable organizations.

Betting on the future

It is no secret that Chile’s educational standards are perhaps the single most important challenge for the country’s medium-term development as well as a short-term bottleneck for businesses in many sectors. And that was reflected in all four of this year’s winners of AmCham’s Good Corporate Citizen Prize.

As well as Fundación Pehuén’s scholarships and the important educational components of Central Restaurantes-Aramark’s program, another winner – the Network of Innovative Teachers Program presented by Microsoft Chile – focuses exclusively on education. New technology could do much to improve pupil attainment but, according to Microsoft, is being under-used because teachers don’t necessarily have the skills to take advantage of the possibilities it offers.

Based on that diagnosis, the company has – in alliance with other private and public institutions – created a network through which teachers can acquire new skills and share their experiences. In one of its key aims, the program seeks to increase the self-esteem of teachers and, as a result, the respect they command, says Martín Karich, communications manager for Microsoft Chile and Bolivia.

This year’s other winner – the Prevention of Risks at School Program of the Asociación Chilena de Seguridad (ACHS), a workplace health and safety organization – also seeks to contribute to Chile’s long-term development by teaching the country’s schoolchildren that accidents can be avoided. “The objective is to create a habit of safety… among the young people who will be the workers of the future, with an enormous economic and social impact for Chile,” says Eduardo Undurraga, general manager of the ACHS.

The program has an annual cost of US$600,000, estimates Undurraga. Since its launch in 1979, it has acquired regional recognition, he adds, and has served as a model for similar programs in other countries, including Colombia and Costa Rica.

Bottom line

One of the charges sometimes laid at the door of CSR programs is that, although the companies who implement them feel good and may see benefit to their corporate image, the hard results are, in fact, difficult to measure. However, the four programs receiving this year’s Good Corporate Citizen Prize suggest otherwise.

Measurement of results is, indeed, one of their key objectives and, at the ACHS, Undurraga points out that the accident rate among workers of 30 years of age or younger dropped from 51.3% in 1993 to 37.5% last year. This indicates, he says, that the School Accident Program, which has reached 3.6 million pupils, is having a positive impact.

At a personal level, Nivaldo Piñaleo, one of the beneficiaries of a Fundación Pehuén scholarship, pays high tribute to this program, for which he is now working. Without its support, he would, he recalls, have had to abandon his studies, despite his desire to continue.

“It gave me the opportunity to work and serve my own people,” he says. “I could demonstrate to other young people that it is possible to persevere and to show that there is a way out of poverty.”

For Microsoft’s Innovative Teachers’ Network, just a year into its existence, it is still perhaps premature to assess results. However, in a promise of success, Martín Karich notes that over 10,000 teachers have already joined the program, adding that it hopes to incorporate a further 20,000 over the next two years.

And, as well as appreciating the recognition of receiving AmCham’s Good Corporate Citizen Prize 2007, all four companies drew attention to the benefits of the prize for the programs themselves. “Now we can show the families [in our program] that what we have achieved is recognized by society and that it’s worth continuing,” says Julio Mellado, executive director of Fundación Pehuén.

A similar view is echoed by Central Restaurantes-Aramark’s Claudia Vidal. “This prize is a tribute to the effort of the people who run it, but also to the communities that have wanted to be part of the project,” she concludes.

Jury MembersThe jury responsible for selecting the winners of AmCham’s Good Corporate Citizen Prize 2007 was formed by: § Mateo Budinich, president, AmCham
§ Rodolfo Echeverría, general manager, Coca-Cola de Chile, and chair of AmCham’s Social Alliance Committee
§ María Eugenia Hirmas, director, Presidency of Chile’s social and cultural foundations
§ Craig A.
