\nEstaba de lo m\u00e1s interesado leyendo (el estudio de Mercer Human Resource Consulting) que Chile tiene m\u00e1s d\u00edas feriado (15) que cualquier otro pa\u00eds de Am\u00e9rica, a excepci\u00f3n de Colombia (18). \u00a1M\u00e9xico tiene s\u00f3lo 8! <\/p>\n
En un principio, no estaba seguro de c\u00f3mo reaccionar ante esto, pero cuando le\u00ed que los ejecutivos chilenos trabajan m\u00e1s horas que en cualquier pa\u00eds del mundo, fui solidario y luego \u00a1me emocion\u00e9 de saber cu\u00e1n productivos somos! Menos d\u00edas trabajados, pero m\u00e1s que compensados por horas de oficina, productividad y eficiencia\u2026 \u00a1Con raz\u00f3n la tasa de natalidad est\u00e1 cayendo!<\/p>\n
Y este a\u00f1o somos m\u00e1s afortunados que de costumbre, porque ninguna de estas maravillosas fechas cae en un fin de semana, por lo que no se pierden feriados. Ya hemos pasado m\u00e1s de la mitad del a\u00f1o, \u00a1pero lo mejor a\u00fan est\u00e1 por llegar! El Congreso us\u00f3 toda su sabidur\u00eda y experiencia combinadas para impedir que se arruinara una buena pausa en torno a la celebraci\u00f3n del D\u00eda de la Independencia de Chile -el 18 de septiembre, que cae martes- y al posterior D\u00eda de las Glorias del Ej\u00e9rcito (el 19 de septiembre), que tambi\u00e9n es un d\u00eda feriado. <\/p>\n
Gracias al Congreso, se nos regal\u00f3 un d\u00eda \u201csandwich\u201d adicional: el lunes 17 de septiembre. Esto significa que nos iremos a la nieve o la playa por nueve d\u00edas. Despu\u00e9s de todo, \u00bfqui\u00e9n en su sano juicio volver\u00e1 al trabajo el jueves y viernes, trayendo consigo una terrible resaca tras beber patri\u00f3ticamente en honor a la naci\u00f3n y sus capacitados defensores, s\u00f3lo para recibir los insultos de sus colegas?<\/p>\n
Luego pens\u00e9: en verdad, \u00bfcu\u00e1nto trabajamos realmente? Y la respuesta es: \u00a1No mucho! El \u201cejecutivo promedio\u201d es realmente un individuo completamente ocioso. Veamos la situaci\u00f3n con m\u00e1s detalle:<\/p>\n

\n\u00b7 D\u00eda de apreciaci\u00f3n del cliente – 1
\n\u00b7 D\u00edas de mal tiempo – 3 (trat\u00e9, pero simplemente no hubo c\u00f3mo \u2026)
\n\u00b7 Huelgas (ya sea que uno est\u00e9 \u201cen huelga\u201d o \u00a1que todos los dem\u00e1s lo est\u00e9n!) – 2 <\/p>\n
Bueno, eso da un total de 150 d\u00edas fuera de la oficina y \u00a1deja apenas 215 d\u00edas para trabajar! \u00a1Eso equivale a semanas de cuatro d\u00edas!<\/p>\n
Y qu\u00e9 ocurre con quienes trabajan por hora, se podr\u00e1n preguntar. Y de hecho debieran hacerlo, porque ellos trabajan seis d\u00edas a la semana (45 horas semanales), toman sus vacaciones (15 d\u00edas) y a menos que les toque \u201clibre\u201d ese d\u00eda, tienen que trabajar los feriados (si bien se les paga el doble).<\/p>\n
Dios, \u00a1qu\u00e9 feliz estoy de ser ejecutivo en Chile! En realidad soy un independiente , as\u00ed que cambie las reglas para que se adaptaran a m\u00ed: todos los lunes y viernes son un d\u00eda \u201csandwich\u201d o un \u201cd\u00eda administrativo\u201d, lo que significa que reduje la semana a una de tres d\u00edas con todos los feriados como \u201cgratificaciones adicionales\u201d. Mis empleados me ven poco, pero en realidad no parece importarles. De hecho, me adoran. Como dicen: la ausencia es al amor lo que el aire al fuego: apaga el peque\u00f1o y aviva el grande.<\/p>\n
En caso de que est\u00e9n interesados, estoy trabajando arduamente (!!) en una OPI para cominezos del 2008. \u00bfOPI? Obsolescencia Planificada Individualmente; tambi\u00e9n llamada AFP en Chile.<\/p>\n

\nI was most interested to read (study by Mercer Human Resource Consulting) that Chile has more public holidays (15) than any other country in the Americas except for Colombia (18). Mexico has only 8! <\/p>\n
I was unsure how to react to this at first but when I also read that Chilean executives work more hours than in almost any other country in the world, I was sympathetic and then excited to know how productive we are! Less days worked, but more than made up for by hours at the office, productivity and efficiency\u2026 No wonder the birth rate is falling!<\/p>\n
And this year we are more than usually fortunate because none of these wonderful dates falls on a weekend – no wasted public holidays. We are more than halfway through the year but the best is yet to come! Congress has used all its combined wisdom and experience to avoid ruining a good break surrounding Chile\u2019s Independence Day celebrations – September 18th which falls on a Tuesday – and is followed by Armed Forces Day (September 19th) which is also a public holiday. <\/p>\n
Thanks to Congress, we have been awarded an extra \u201csandwich\u201d day – Monday, September 17th. This means we will be off to the snow or the beach for nine days. After all, who in their right mind is going to return to work for the Thursday and Friday, nursing a lousy hangover after patriotically drinking the health of the nation and its able-bodied defenders, just to suffer the insults of office co-workers?<\/p>\n
Then I thought: in truth, how much do we actually work? And the answer is – not much! The \u201caverage executive\u201d is really a completely idle individual. Let\u2019s take a closer look:<\/p>\n

\n\u00b7 Sundays – 52
\n\u00b7 Official public holidays – 15
\n\u00b7 Extra \u201csandwich\u201d 2007 – 1
\n\u00b7 Official (average) vacation – 15
\n\u00b7 Sick days – 5 (don\u2019t kid me; that\u2019s a minimum)
\n\u00b7 Additional \u201csandwich\u201d days – 3 (come on, the Boss understands!)
\n\u00b7 Corporate Golf Outing – 1
\n\u00b7 Customer Appreciation Day – 1
\n\u00b7 Bad weather days – 3 (you tried but there was just no way\u2026)
\n\u00b7 Strikes (either \u201con strike\u201d or everyone else is!) – 2<\/p>\n
Well, that comes to 150 days away from the office leaving just 215 days for work! That is equivalent to a four-day week! <\/p>\n
And what about the hourly workers, you may ask. And indeed you should, because they get to work six days a week (45-hour week), take their vacation (15 days) and unless they happen to be \u201cfree\u201d that day, they have to work the public holidays (but get paid double).<\/p>\n
Boy, am I glad I am an executive in Chile! Actually I am self-employed and so have changed the rules to suit myself: every Monday and Friday is a \u201csandwich\u201d or \u201cpersonal administration day\u201d which means I have got it down to a three-day week with all public holidays as \u201cextra perks\u201d. My employees see little of me but they really do not seem to mind. Actually they love me. Absence tends to make the heart grow fonder. <\/p>\n
In case you\u2019re interested, I\u2019m working hard (!!) on an IPO for early 2008. IPO? Individually Planned Obsolescence; also called an AFP in Chile.<\/p>\n
